I'm doing this exact same thing! See, while watching Arino play Quest of Ki, I thought to myself "those controls look like they can be finessed- he's just not using the right touch". It reminded me of something like Trials HD or N+, where getting your best scores happen when you're in The Zone.

Definitely got the N+ vibe from it too. Going level by level it took a few hours, and level 98 took me 45 minutes. I got the key once 25 minutes in, but there's a loving worm that comes out of the top floor out of nowhere. It's so much of a dick move that I laughed my rear end off, then spent another 20 minutes dying endlessly.

What do you find most interesting about the Season 1 episodes? Finding out about the history of the video game industry, or the people themselves? I personally like learning about their approach when creating games.

Three? drat, I must have missed one somewhere along the way. Pokemon, Capcom... is there another subbed first season episode out there in the wild?

It's been about five or six episodes since I posted, so here's my obligatory "you-all-are-too-kind-thanks-for-keeping-us-in-GCCX" closing. I promise by the next time to find a better way to say it, if only so it reflects just how genuinely awesome I think our subbers are.

I think some of the game industry stuff like the original ideas that led to innovating or changing the way certain things are done are interesting, but I like learning about the designer philosophies more.

I agree, because (being in the business) they are all so, so different from any approach to game design that I've ever experienced. I'm not sure if it's an East / West difference, or a big company / small company difference, but every time they would describe their game design methods I got equal parts :aaa: and :psyduck:

Man, I really enjoy seeing these types of episodes. Hearing about how these video game developers started out distributing their products as a mail order service and doing the related work as a family is very endearing. It makes me happy to see how far they've come. I also love seeing game developers that actively play the games they produce and take joy in them, that just shows that they really love their work. Learning about the video game industry's past and learning about the people is just super interesting all around.

I love both aspects. Actually I kinda wish they did more of these and covered a good portion of the industry. It really does paint a good picture of what it used to be, what they were doing all this for, and even show you how they're still having fun!

You can read the history of the industry anywhere, getting a first hand account of it is another thing entirely. Hearing what they think about play and fun, especially on things from before the industry got all navel gazing is pretty rad.

Their stories about getting into the game industry were really interesting. It's a young enough industry that a lot of them really got in on the ground floor. I was surprised to learn that the creator of Pokemon started off as an arcade game zinester.

The Koei guy was really cool, too. Seeing how much he loved his own games was just :3:.

I like that it's a view into game companies that just don't get that much behind the scenes examination in the west. Yeah, they're tightly managed promotional puff pieces but they still give some insight that generally isn't available.

That's part of a Mazda rotary engine on the tool cabinet! Actually, looking at the bottom text the katakana reads "Savannah" which was what the old RX-7 (SA22 and FC3S) used to be known by as well.

Good eye! Each episode focused on a certain car, and they'd feature enthusiasts of said car. I got that screenshot from here, taken by a guy whose Savannah was on the show. I'm not sure why Arino was one of the hosts since he doesn't seem to know too much about cars.

The interview with the pokemon creator was extremely :3:

His games really reflect his personal whimsy, and that's a rare thing (and probably one reason they're still so popular today).

It was fascinating listening to his creative process too, it was much more about experimenting with certain feelings and concepts and then seeing how to fit those within the framework of a game, rather than something so banal as 'we're going to make an rpg'.

I wish I'd had the chance to meet some of that team, even through an interpreter. Many moons ago, I worked at Nintendo HQ here in the states during the early Pokemon days, but I never had the opportunity to meet with the japanese team.

I had a go on one of those a few weeks. It was a bit embarrassing to sit at something so small. The game plays more like a music game (i.e. you have to move the lever in time with on-screen indicators) so it didn't quite have DDG's tense train-stopping action.
