You have to special-order the tires for the Veyron, they're made on a special production line because they need to be absolutely perfectly made. It's no fun having a blowout while doing a top speed run, after all. Whether you can actually order them directly from Michelin, I would think so, if you can pony up the cash. I think you need to have a specialist fit the tires, probably because seating the bead properly etc. on a 400+kph ultrahypermegacar is somewhat important. The Veyron uses the Michelin PAX runflat system, which require specially-designed rims: Obviously, that's not a Veyron wheel, PAX tires are used on a bunch of more pedestrian vehicles as well. From an engineering perspective, PAX works. The problem lay in the fact that in order to service PAX wheels and tires, a tire shop would need to buy tens of thousands of dollars of new equipment for one specific task. Getting enough shops on board with the idea proved to be impossible.

I think it's more, 2 weeks prep (as in story boards, script writing, script rehearsal, blocking, site selection, car selection, getting cars) , 5 days of shooting, then 2 weeks of editing. It's not 2 weeks to prepare (finish) the whole segment, it's 4 weeks 5 days.

But they are all doing their own thing, so they can do more than one segment at once. But I guess if each segment takes a month to do, that explains why they only have about six episodes per series.

That, in my opinion, was the icing on the cake.

Getting enough shops on board with the idea proved to be impossible. It's not too different than what was on H1 Hummers or HMMWV's and those can be replaced in the field with hand tools and a strap. Basically a rubber/composite donut on a 2 piece wheel. The labor intensive part is compressing the donut and getting it in and out of the tire. More trouble than its worth, I can use its usefulness in the military, but even with the civilian relaunch of the h1 coming up, they're planning to dump the runflat option and offer a simple, easy to install beadlock insert as standard. Tooling wasn't a big problem. I do it with a 29$ ratchet strap, the official Kent Moore tool for runflat removal runs about $700. The big money eater is labor, because when you have to explain to a customer that he/she has to pay 2 hours labor per wheel for tire removal and installation, they tend to freak a bit. What tends to happen in these situations is the runflats get tossed in the garbage on the first tire swap to save on future labor. My Lincoln came with the Michelin runflat option but alas, no runflats when I put new tires on.. I wonder why.. I was glad to see Moab on Top Gear USA last night.. I was in the exact same car wash last week hosing off my truck... glad to recognize a few spots. Big K of Justice fucked around with this message at 18:08 on Sep 26, 2012 |

I know this isn't the Fifth Gear thread (I doubt one exists), but I wanted to point out that this season has been pretty solid. In this most recent one, Tiff races in a Lambo sponsored race against professional drivers, and does quite well. FG having a racing driver with a personality does give them some flexibility to do some things that TG can't. It's still a worse than either TGUK or TGUS, but I do think this season has been decent enough to watch.

I watched Fifth Gear in the past as more of a "nothing else to watch that's properly car related" thing, but this season has been genuinely good. The circle track test of the Optima was surprisingly entertaining.

Watched the latest Top Gear US last night. That was genuinely entertaining. When the Mustang went off the cliff my two-year-old (who loves cars) yells "OOH NOO!" and I was howling with laughter. I'm sure the continental would fair just as well, there's nothing really to hang up underneath in terms of drive train if you slap a basic skid plate across the front of late model continental... Oddly enough I ran it through Valley of the Gods in Utah when I picked it up Colorado.. so I watched the Top Gear episode with glee even though their trail they claim they took makes no physical sense... but thats reality tv for you.

My favorite part was the look on Rut's face when Adam was bouncing the Mustang up that really tough rocky hill. The one where the whole front end went up and down like a lowrider. I would have loved to see a better conclusion showing what condition the two cars left were in. What was left of the suspensions, etc.

Ha, some of the locals in Moab kind of made fun at the behind the scenes stuff on another forum. The cliff stuff at the end was on private land [BLM would not let a tv crew do what they did], they closed off the road that was just out of camera view, and use a bulldozer to lower the Lincoln down. The same bulldozer at the end pulled the Lincoln out and not the Yaris, they just shot it that way. Another guy noted some of the trails they mentioned taking doesn't exist but is a combination of various trails, but that's reality tv for you... For anyone that's been there the ending was shot on Kane Creek Rd SW of Moab.
