Just read an interview with John Ostrander about the new volume of Agent of the Empire. http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=40934 I like that, while still retaining the Bond influences, it'll also take from John le Carre and The Avengers. I hope as the series goes on each volume takes from a different 60's spy-fi series. Also interested that it'll focus on the Dooku family after the Clone Wars.

VaultAggie posted:drat, that does look awesome. Classic star wars with empire ships and rebel ships Duking it out. Star destroyers actually blowing poo poo up and tie fighters as actually semi-threatening. Even better, the medical frigate gets blown up. Technically Nebulon B frigates were considered escorts, with a few of them being converted into medical ships. They didn't have the hanger for a large contingent of fighters, so usually they'd be paired with a Mon Cal or an ISD (they were on both sides) who'd provide the fighter support. One of the things I loved about Tie Fighter (the game) was that they added in a pile of ships to make space battles make more sense. Victory Star Destroyers who'd provide a backup role for ISD's or operate in smaller conflict zones. Imperial Escort Carriers (which were basically giant boxes with massive hangars), assault shuttles, Gunboats (although that was Xwing), tie advanced and all sorts of stuff (including platforms). And to keep this on books, X-wing, when originally released had a set of the "Farlander Papers" with it. I don't know if you can dig it out as just them, but the X-wing Strategy Guide actually inserted them in semi chronological order so that there was a cohesive narrative between the missions about a guy basically following Luke's path (and according to the papers, he's the one ywing that survived the first death star).

Yup, I loved that. Keyan Farlander was the character's name. They did the same thing with the TIE Fighter strategy guide, creating the character of Maarek Stele. That's something I always liked about video game strategy guides from that era -- they tried to make them entertaining in their own right, in addition to being informative about the game. Hell, the King's Quest guides were practically novellas.

I highly, highly recommend it, and I know others on this thread do, as well. It's the best Star Wars thing that's happened in years. The writing is great, the tone is reminiscent of the OT and the original Daley Han Solo books, and the combination of OT and Connery-era Bond meshes surprisingly well. I honestly can't recommend this enough. I have a friend who loves Bond and the OT but is really resistant to the EU, and I'm going to get him this simply because, even with his views on the EU, I truly think he'll love it.

Please god be Stover. Faceless mooks and people don't get covered much in Star Wars. It is like if somebody did the History of our world, but just covered famous and infamous people from WW2 and the Cold War.

Silly question. How do you pronounce Pellaeon? I've always mentally pronounced it "pell-LAY-on" but apparently it's more common in fandom to put the stress on the first syllable. What do the official sources say -- that is, how is it pronounced in the audiobooks (or video games or whatever else)?

PAL-e-Yon seems to be how almost all the audiobooks pronounce it. It's pretty much been bored into my skull now, so that's how I prefer it/

Is there any material that expands on the post-Legacy universe? In unrelated and tabletop RPG-related news, would it be too canon-breaking to play a cheerful, boisterous Anzati Jedi who makes a habit out of never fully draining his victims' soup so that he might fight them another day when they're better? EDIT: I just think it's a funny idea, that's all. Everyone's expecting this bloodthirsty murderer to walk in the door, but instead they get Count Brian Von Blessed. If you meant Legacy comics, then Legacy - War was released to finish the whole thing off, on the off chance that you missed it. After that, nothing yet, though I think it's a very fertile ground for more stories - the galaxy's left in a state where a lot could happen and I hope they don't brush all of the great worldbuilding aside just for the sake of whatever other story comes next.

Aye, that's what I meant. It's just that the EU was so cluttered with Yuuzhan Vong this and Darksaber that and Jacen Solo becoming Darth rear end in a top hat I got completely turned off. On a more nerdy side, it was difficult as hell to run an adventure in the intervening period since I was afraid of stepping on grognards' toes ("No you can't run that adventure because on Page 75 of Darth Jackass: Huttbane the Vong yada yada"). On that note, which do you think would be more interesting: a game where you're Jedi trying to rebuild the Order, or Imperial Knights in: Her Imperial Majesty's Secret Service? Cade Skywalker and Jax from Sons of Anarchy have weirdly fused together in my head. Grizzled tough blonde man children with father/destiny issues and all that. Almost done playing through both KOTOR games on STEAM. It really is sad that the new Revan series pretty much has ruined the main characters of both gaes by giving them 'canon personalities'. There are some things that should be a drat mystery. It is like suddenly giving Hercules an incredibly lame back story that he isn't a demi-god but an ancient assistant of a BC Kebab Shop who has allergies to eels.

Hey, if George Lucas ever decides to adapt the Dark Empire series to film and finds it's running a little too short, he can just start it off with the Eclipse star destroyer flying past the screen. It would be bound to take up at least half an hour's worth of the movie.

Yes, Legacy cleans up a lot of the trash well, without sweeping it under the rug. It just 'tidies' the galaxy, I guess. It'd be fun to play Imperial Knights. They get lightsabers and the force, but they have a different set of loyalties it'd be fun to explore. Edit: Oh, and thinking of it mechanically, it'd be hard (to my mind, anyway) to have Jedi Knights Rebuilding to play unlike 'Find new Jedi guy. Leave him to work out the internal politics of a new Jedi Order while the rest of you go to find the next one'. If you see what I'm saying. Could be just me. One thing I'm interested in which isn't explored in any SW media I've encountered is the idea of force sensitive people who aren't force sensitive enough, or disciplined enough, to join the Jedi. For example one who was too old when discovered so passed over for training, so went on to smuggle or bounty hunt with growing force sensitivity, but no trainer to keep them focused or disciplined. A neutral, independent, force user. EddieDean fucked around with this message at 17:33 on Sep 24, 2012 |

A neutral, independent, force user. They've featured a little of that here and there. In the Jedi Apprentice series (the EU answer to Animorphs in some respects, though it was better than it had to be), Jedi learners who aren't selected by a master after they complete their training in the temple are packed off to join their agricultural division and that kind of thing. There are also factions which use the Force but aren't connected to the Jedi or the Sith, but I think they tend to be featured in RPGs or restricted to background mentions. One aspect of the LOTF series that could have been very interesting if they'd paid more attention to it was that Jacen Solo had been off the radar for five years learning about the Force from non-Jedi groups.

They kept saying Luke was going to retrace Jacen's footsteps during that five years, and we ended up with a couple rather forgettable stops that amounted to nothing more than "Yeah, he was here. Soooo... since there are something like eleven thousand posts in this thread and I don't want to deal with accidentally catching spoilers (I already have thanks to the Wookieepedia ), I will just say this and be on my way: After having read the X-Wing series up to the beginning of the fifth book, I can't help but feel like this author is far worse than Stackpole was. Am I alone in this? Also, the massive change-up in characters has me longing for the old "cast and crew" of the Rogue Squadron quadrilogy. I know that perception will probably change as I have to warm up to the characters, but I just need to do a sanity check to make sure it's not just me.
