Aren't the games anti-war? I mean it's subtle but the storyline is all about corruption and people dying needlessly. MW1 had a fantastic section where you took control of an AC-130 and got to see just how much of a video game it is to soldiers.

COD: Black Ops is warporn, whereas Black Ops: The Line is all about seeing the actual impact those video game choices make.

I got the sense that once Activision pissed off Infinity Ward and they left, that's when the series sort of tanked and started seeming like 'warporn'. Granted, I can't confirm this since I haven't played a Call of Duty since CoD3. (I also was under the impression that since then, Treyarch's iterations have been better than IW's)

Wait, why is the headphone jack on top of the gamepad? Doesn't that just guarantee the wire going over the screen if you want to lean back and relax while playing on the gamepad? That seems like the worst place to put it.

The thin anti-war veneer on MW1 was gone by MW2, which was a "proper" IW game, although not necessarily one the company was happy to make (Activision made a deal with West & Zampella that after MW2 they would be allowed to make a non-CoD game in exchange for doing MW2). MW1 is basically the only game that has that, and even then it was basically just the quotes after you die and the AC-130 section (which tended to be received more as "Cool! This is just like those grainy tapes you see from time to time!" than causing anyone to actually reflect on the video-game-like nature of modern war) that were still overpowered by the "MILITARY gently caress YEAH" that was the rest of the game.

I'm pretty sure any illusions of being a grounded cautionary look at war went out the window the first time we saw the scene of them dual-wielding SMGs from the back of a snowmobile in the MW2 trailer.

Still dumb though.

In trying to think how long mine are. Loping around the back I basically lose half a foot or more and will be worried moving ny head will jerk the controller.

I'm pretty sure Call of Duty has always been anything BUT a "grounded cautionary look at war". CoD, much like Medal of Honor, has been about making moments from popular war movies playable to some extent, heavily scripted set pieces, and inaccurate portrayals of any given battle they were set to, and this was before they went to the Modern Warfare series. Of course, this doesn't stop people from pretending otherwise. EDIT: Maybe it's the famous quotes that the games keep dropping? To me its like if they started throwing in famous quotes after every death in God of War: it wouldn't make the game particularly insightful about modern war or violence. This derail is honestly a whole different thread altogether though. fivegears4reverse fucked around with this message at 00:28 on Sep 29, 2012 |

MW2 was clearly a parody. You can't get more obvious than sticking Cheney and Rumsfield quotes alongside Ghandi and Einstein. The American soldier sections led you from defending a Goodburger to invading the white house. By way of escorting a tank column through someone's front lawn. And then there's the actual story, where your British and Canadian task force teamed up with Russians to nuke America and assassinate the terrorist general who led the middle east invasion in the first game.
