I've gotten Cigar city stuff in NYC before but I don't know thats regular. Southern Tier for sure...anything else?

Just picked up some Cigar City Good Gourd and Humidor Series IPA. Also picked up Nostrodamus because I have never had it before. That will be tonights drinking. Cigar City is quickly becoming my favorite brewery. Living in Florida helps with that, but god drat they make some delicious things.

The bar couldn't sell the beer, for some reason, so they were having $3 pints of nitro Milk Stout. Needless to say I was very drunk 3 nights on Milk Stout. funkybottoms posted:personally, i'd be on the lookout for Captain Lawrence, Ithaca, Founders, and Southampton. I'm very confused as to what people recommend Ithaca for. They make Flower Power, but nothing else has been good by them that I've had. Also most of Weyerbachers beers are pretty mediocre and even grainy (Last Chance IPA, Old Heathan, Merry Monks, and Heresy to name a few).

Cascazilla is tasty too. Weyerbacher and Smuttynose are both average-at-best in my experience, though some people seem to disagree. Brooklyn and Great Lakes both offer really high quality examples of common styles, but if you're looking for something exciting and different, you want to avoid anything they sell in a 6 pack. It will be very well done, but it won't break new ground, because that really isn't the goal. Troegs, Victory, Ommegang, everything they do is excellent.

Where in upstate NY? If we're talking Syracuse I can give you the complete rundown of where to go and what beers you could get. Cigar City doesn't distribute anywhere outside NYC area (if it even distributes to NYC). Also, RobBorer mentioned Captain Lawrence, but, oddly enough, they don't make it to Syracuse or Rochester, although there has been rumors they would start distributing there (edit: just checked, Captain Lawrence won't be in that area until January). Jolly Roger also distributes to both of those cities, if you can't get that stuff in California. Troegs is very worth buying, especially troegenator, and Victory as well. Great Lakes also makes nothing but extremely great beers.

Lots of smooth tasty rounded character with subtlety and nuance. Don't know about their other stuff but Baltic Porter is good enough in my books.

Smuttynose is pretty solid all-around, and while i'm not a fan of Weyerbacher outside of a few beers, a lot of people seem to like them, so... i'll also agree with AofS that Brooklyn's seasonal/large format stuff tends to be much more interesting than their year-round offerings.

But no, I'm interested in hearing about this as well. Content: I cracked open the Hoppin' Frog Saison IPA the other day with friends, and just got a lot of overwhelming sweetness in the end. Not that exciting! We have discovered, though, that just about any pumpkin beer can be improved by mixing it with cinnamon schnapps. I recommend Great Balls of Fire if you can get it in your area.

Are you planning on driving to Hoboken? You brave soul. Hit up the beer garden on the outskirts, Pilsner Haus- it's the same people who do Radegast in Brooklyn. Last I was there they had Ramstein Octoberfest and it's super (Butler NJ brewery). There isn't really much around Hoboken for breweries or brewpubs, closest is probably the Gaslight brewpub in South Orange. Edit: The cake boss bakery will disappoint you, you have been forewarned.

Anyone here tried Schlafly Pumpkin Ale? It seems to have a decent amount of hype, so I picked up a sixer. It's quite good! Tastes like a cinnamon pumpkin pie, crust and all. I also tried New Belgium's Red Hoptober earlier this month, and it's really good! I expected an Octoberfest-style ale, but it's more like a mild IPA with a hint of the usual seasonal spices and malts. I'm usually pretty lukewarm on New Belgium in general, but Red Hoptober is probably my new favorite of their beers.

I'm not talking about crime (which is why I assume you bring up Camden?), it's really congested to get to and the town has very very limited parking. An hour drive could get you to Cricket Hill and Ramstein without traffic (there will be traffic), but they're both basically warehouse tours with no restaurants or anything much to do besides drink good beers. You could also hop a train and be at Brooklyn Brewery in a bit over an hour, give or take.

I think I really like living in Bend, partly for the same reasons I liked to visit Ft. Collins back when I lived in CO. Within biking distance (the easy sort, too, since it's flat and all the cars are aware of bikes and the speed limit is really low throughout), there are what I'd consider four nation-class breweries -- Deschutes, Boneyard, 10 Barrel and Crux (recently founded by an ex-Deschutes guy). The others are at least average, too, so I can't complain. The only thing I can bitch about is that there's no The Mayor of Old Town-ish bar here that has a zillion taps, which is surprising in a way considering.

Oh yeah, my girlfriend looked into it and apparently Hoboken has strict parking rules or something? I think our plan of action is to check out the cake boss place, go to some museum in Newark, go back to NJ Beer CO (maybe) to check out their beers, then hit up Triumph on the way home for dinner and beer since the beer looks decent there. How is Maxwell's? I know it's pretty famous. Any good beer on tap? Also what stores should I check out while in the areas?
