No, Rio Ferdinand! he was nicknamed Snoop by the other United players for awhile cos they looked so similar, iirc.

Surely that's a reference to Snoop Dogg? Ferdinand looks a lot more like him than Snoop Pearson.

River Plate fans unveiled the longest banner in the world.

The length? 7.8 KM.

FourFourTwo posted:

River Plate fans unveiled a 7.8 kilometre banner on Monday they claim is the longest in the world and fit for the Guinness Book of Records.
The red and white banner measuring 7,829.74 metres was paraded by thousands of fans from the site of River's former ground in the Palermo district of the capital to the Monumental, their giant World Cup stadium in Nunez opened in 1938.
The fans' timing coincides with the team's improved form in their last two matches in which they have scored nine goals and conceded none, including Sunday's 5-0 rout of Godoy Cruz at the Monumental.

Organisers said more than 50,000 people took part in the procession along Alcorta Avenue that lasted nearly three hours.
Fans then watched a match in the Monumental between the River reserves and their under-20 team, who are South American champions.
Sunday's victory was River's first at home this season after two draws and two defeats following their promotion back to the first division. They are in mid-table with 15 points from 10 matches.

The immensely popular River were relegated for the first time in June 2011 after a decade of poor management.
They renew their league rivalry with the equally well-supported Boca Juniors in the "Superclasico", the biggest club match on the Argentine calendar, in their next home match in three weeks time.

Oh c'mon, pac-man with "EAT THEM" at the bottom isn't that bad.

Although I did think the word "tifo" used in this context was solely the domain of Americans.

That shirt is actually referencing a quote from critically acclaimed 1986 film Blue Velvet, although apparently several others have used it since then. Can't look at that face and think he went with the antiquated film reference rather than "Hmm, this is vulgar, I'll take it" though.

He claims someone gave it to him, and that it is indeed a reference to the movie, yeah.

Took me a bit to figure out the background for this. Didn't realize he was mocking the ref's appearance. Thought it was just a strange grimace towards him.

"The Mexican League fined the Dorados Sinaloa playmaker £1,500 ($2,400) for impersonating a referee during a second division game against Toros Neza. The 39-year-old wasn't calling fouls, waving imaginary cards around or anything like that. He was literally impersonating the referee."
