Have to go SP with my one pick. It would be fate if I got '67 Tom Seaver, given that he saved the Orchids in their first Gauntlet run and sunk them in the second.

Viscount Slim
Mar 9, 2012

I'd like to move Dennis Martinez to fifth starter, Schilling to fourth, Todd Worrell to setup, and Luke Appling back to starting SS. If we actually got Chris Young, he should be long man, in lieu of Warneke. Send down Gene Garber; DL Passeau.

As to draft preferences, I suggest Josh Hamilton in the first (Willie Mays is imploding, unlike in the Expansion), and a starting pitcher in the second round. (I expect enough SP will go ahead of us as to make it not worth drafting a fifth starter in that spot, but a bottom-rotation guy in the second would suit, probably ~Tiant/Hoyt).

Send down McDowell to get his control under control, Crowder to the rotation, LaMarr Hoyt came up as a reliever, and shall be my 7th inning guy now.

Draft Preferences

1st Round:
LF Rickey or better
Cap'n Jetes
SP Clifton Phifer Lee or better

2nd Round [first pick]:
(the above)
SP Dock Ellis or Better

2nd Round [second pick]:
RP Eck-Betancourt (no Bob Johnson)

: Okay, where were we? Right, Adam Dunn had been fighting the Three True Outcomes when Cyber-Dunn came from the future to fight them off and then tell Adam Dunn that it was up to him to save the world from Richie Sexson. And then Dante Bichette attacked! That brings us to Episode Three: Day of the Dunn, Part Three! Okay, so Dante Bichette attacks with his deadly Coors Effect attack, which sucks away oxygen from the air or however that works in Denver. Anyway, Dunn and Cyber-Dunn retreat, not knowing how to deal with this new foe. Cyber-Dunn leads Adam Dunn to his secret lair, which is located underneath the Forest Glen Metra Station. Cyber-Dunn explains that he transported parts of his future lair to the present in order to help him help Adam Dunn defeat Richie Sexson. Adam Dunn is still skeptical that any future cyborg version of himself is going to be helpful, though. That's when Cyber-Dunn gives Adam Dunn the NeyerBat, a baseball bat crafted by Rob Neyer himself and said to imbue its wielder with supernatural, but statistically significant, powers. Then they get an alert that Dante Bichette is attacking Lincoln Park! To be continued!

DOZENS INJURED AS LOSERS CRUSH SUPERBAS 6-1

Rockford- The Losers are not a team you gently caress with.

For all of the talk about the Dervishes and Unspecifieds, the Losers have, by a fair margin, been the best team in the Dynamo League, and currently hold a 10.5 game lead in their division thanks to their efforts. With the Oranges having a seemingly unending injury crisis, the Bearers being hamstrung by their ownership situation, and the Radbourns being a conceptual team that never had a chance, there seems little drama left in the Vae Victis Division. It is possible that another team, most likely the Oranges, could have an incredible stretch run and make it close, but, based on the first nine weeks of the season, it doesn't seem likely.

Not that the seeming inevitability of another playoff berth has done much of anything to slow the Losers down. Today, the Losers continued their brutal domination of the Dynamo League with a 6-1 thrashing of the Superbas. Interestingly, starter Nolan Ryan, despite pitching well, only lasted five innings before being lifted for C.C. Sabathia, who has been pitching mainly long relief this season. Asked for the reason for the quick hook, Lord Mayor Humungus was happy to explain his reasoning. "I am not a cruel man, neither to my subordinates nor to my foes. We held a lead of 5-1 at the time. I have seen the Superbas, studied them. There was no possibility that they would score the necessary amount of runs in the number of innings related. There was no need to torment them further with the power of Ryan. Their fate is already sealed. There is no hope for the Superbas or the town of Poughkeepsie. Whether I am cruel or kind to them will not save them, and so I choose to be kind, because I am a kind man. They are free to go without any further harm coming to them."

Immediately after finishing the press conference, Humungus ordered that the Superbas' training staff be seized as 'tribute to the victorious Losers'. The Superbas briefly tried to resist, but the Losers' crack team of post-apocalyptic road warriors soon routed them, and made off with the trainers. Asked for the meaning of this seeming contradiction of his earlier statements, Humungus noted that, "[Oscar] Charleston has been injured too many times by the incompetent medical staff of Rockford, we have need of better trainers to keep him on the field. The Superbas, doomed as they are, had no use for their training staff and so, as the stronger team, it was our right and responsibility to take what we needed from the carcass of their team. The lion feeds on the antelope, so we feed on the Superbas."

IMPERIALISTS HUMBLE GENERICS 11-1

Rochester- If you believe Viscount Slim, the only real victory the Imperialists have had in this series was being able to leave Rochester at the end.

"I find it most disagreeable that the Generics of all teams were saved from relegation last season." Said the Viscount in a dispassionate tone. "Oh, don't misunderstand me, the Generics' talent, such that it is, certainly merited another season of survival, but this city, this miserable city...it is a place almost inimical to all sorts of joy and pleasure. Rochester is grey, miserable, rainy when it's not snowing, and I'm reasonably sure that not a single person in this entire burgh is employed. This place is too banal to be hell and too hopeless to be purgatory."

Carlos Zambrano, who lost the game for the Generics, fired back, in a delightful throwback to those hazy days before the Super-League started, "Burma is a loving hellhole, and that's true whether we're talking about the protectorate era where the rear end in a top hat British Raj exploited the people and resources or when there was a loving military dictatorship and...what the gently caress? They're transitioning to democracy? I still hate Burma. They don't even make good heroin. gently caress, I'm out of practice! It's been like, 15 months since I've had to do this, okay?"

UNICORNS SURVIVE ORANGES 4-3

Cleveland- Thirteen expansion teams participated in Expansion Cup II, held before Super-League III. Of those thirteen, exactly one remains: The Cleveland Unicorns.

Thirteen expansion team participated in Expansion Cup III, held before Super-League IV. Of those thirteen, exactly one remains: The Florida Oranges.

As the last survivors of their expansion classes, one would think that these two standard-bearers would among the powerhouses of the Dynamo League and while that was once true, both the Unicorns and Oranges seem to have seen better days, with neither having won a division championship since Super-League V. The Unicorns, still stuck in their eternal feud with the Finger-Bangers, have gradually lost ground as their static roster has been outflanked by Marauder's dynamism in gathering new players. As for the Oranges, they have found themselves on the losing end of a rivalry wit the Losers, who have built one of the greatest rosters in Super-League history.

Still, with a combined eight seasons of Super-League experience coming into the season, one would think that at least one of these teams has a trick up their sleeves.

Today, the Unicorns were able to sneak a win thanks to a favorable matchup. The Oranges sent out Mordecai Brown, a deadballer who pitches to contact, and the Unicorns countered with their Clarke-Wagner-Youngs line of contact hitters, who were more than happy to hack at Brown's pitches. Even better for the Unicorns, their starting pitcher, the underwhelming Jack Scott used his one positive attribute, refusing to walk anyone, to his great advantage, shutting down the Oranges lineup, which relies on power and patience to fuel their offense. The result was a narrow Unicorns win.

Asked for what this loss means for his team, and obviously apathetic oldskool responded, "Do you think the Oranges could pull off sort of a Ryback-type gimmick? Obviously, we'd need to go on a run first, but if we got some momentum, with all of the power hitters we have, we could totally be the Big Hungry of the Super-League."

IceMole, oddly enough, was also concerned with redefining himself and his team, "I don't know, maybe we go back to the faux-high-fantasy of Super-League I? I think that could work, especially if we could get hold of another Bellhorn. I think the first step to the Unicorns retaking a marquee spot in the Super-League is having a good hook to draw readers in."

Box Score

Analysis

You've got the Unicorns next week and the Bangers the week after. Time to prove you really deserve those championships.

Analysis

Your biggest problem is that Adam Dunn is your fourth-best hitter.

Analysis

Andy Messersmith was a fine pitcher. There's a reason the Dodgers were willing to go to arbitration to keep him, after all.

Analysis

Free Valenzuela!

Analysis

Wes Ferrell's back.

Analysis

Wait, why is Joba starting for you? When has Joba starting worked out for anyone?

Analysis

Just imagine how great the Bangers would be doing if they actually starting hitting like they're supposed to.

Analysis

Getting (slightly) better. You need another starter and your bullpen to be less than a complete and utter disaster.

Analysis

Hell, both you and I know this is ending in a early round Gauntlet loss and a dispersal draft with a surplus of relievers.

Analysis

If you want to have a smallball team, you need the kind of players the Doppel-Bangers had, with Raines and Henderson and Cobb. Joe Kelley isn't going to get it done.

Analysis

I think Howard goes to right field and someone on the bench goes to left field.

Analysis

There's a good chance you'll get Ted Williams in the draft. It's not going to solve all of your problems, but it will solve a lot of them.

Analysis

Carlos Zambrano isn't doing very well. As a Cubs fan, this is not news to me.

Analysis

The Machine rolls on.

Analysis

Much like CM Punk, the Saints had a good run, but things are heading off the rails.

Analysis

There are (nominally) six of you guys. I'm sure at least one of you can come up with a plan to fix this mess.

The rest of my #5 starters are a combined 1-8 & my only other option is Coveleski who'd put me over the limit for deadball starters. Joba didn't even lose that start, Neshek blew it and if anybody deserved forgiveness, especially now, it's Pat Neshek.

I agree and am only slightly worried by the seven walks in the "Upstate Beatdown."

Just a note that my roster moves, draft picks and some talking points for the Bearer owners are immediately above the update. I will add that since Schilling is also disintegrating, we might want to just double up on starters and chuck Dale Murphy out into center.

I'm disappointed in Kiner; he's had a depressed average since we started operations, but the power to make up for it isn't really there. Which of my passel of spare corner outfielders can play left best?

Short answer...none of them really.

Fortunately, there's also a long answer.

Looking at Kiner's splits, he's actually doing okay against left-handed pitchers. So, ideally, if you can find him a left-handed hitting platoon mate, that would be ideal. It happens you have a few options there, with Lankford, Drew and Averill all fitting the bill. Unfortunately, Mogul hates you and has decided that neither Lankford or Drew would be any good in left. So, unless you want to move Berkman to LF against RHP, the path of least resistance appears to be Averill platooning with Kiner.

Guess I will put Joe Medwick back into left field and then move Frank Howard over to right field once again.

Have a question for you Smasher. How much of a disaster would it be if I put Paul Molitor into the shortshop position? I'm noticing that Trammell has slipped a lot offensively this season. However he's been defensively solid by how the stats look and don't want to lose more runs from defensive errors then I'd gain from the better looking bat Molitor has right now. Assuming the answer is "Do it and I'll kill you," I'll make this new lineup to move Trammell down the order.

Draft Preference Bonanza!

Willie Stargell's sore, huh? Send down Pop and stick Bobby Murcer in left for the week.

Round 1: Dennis Eckersley (OK, fine, I'd take Ted Williams, I GUESS), then Rickey
Round 2: Top 9 RP, Joe Sambito

quote:

Hell, both you and I know this is ending in a early round Gauntlet loss and a dispersal draft with a surplus of relievers.

Yeah, but new teams can always use more top-tier relievers (and third basemen, I guess), right? I'm sure they'll be in no way scarred by this experience.

Jimmie Foxx appears to have died at the plate, but it seems facile to draft to replace him, given the team.

Ugh. Better pitching seems indicated, but I'm not sure anyone's going to look good in front of this D. I kind of want to draft Killebrew to be a super-utility guy. Well:

Ted Williams
Nolan Ryan
Tom Seaver
Johan Santana
Harmon Killebrew
Derek Jeter
Cliff Lee
Pedro Martinez
JR Richard
Top 5 RP
Chipper Jones
Edgar Martinez
Adam Dunn
Willie Stargell
Grady Sizemore

Have a question for you Smasher. How much of a disaster would it be if I put Paul Molitor into the shortshop position? I'm noticing that Trammell has slipped a lot offensively this season. However he's been defensively solid by how the stats look and don't want to lose more runs from defensive errors then I'd gain from the better looking bat Molitor has right now. Assuming the answer is "Do it and I'll kill you," I'll make this new lineup to move Trammell down the order.

It won't be me killing you, it would be Molitor's defense that did the job.

Molitor's a weird player. He had the athleticism to play a bunch of different positions, but also had a tendency to injure himself when playing in the field, and it's not like he was a great fielder at any position anyway.

All of that being said, you can get away with him at third, and second if your desperate. Putting him at short, though, is probably asking him more than he can deliver.

I'll trade you a viable, hitting 1B for that Jimmie Foxx. John Olerud is currently batting over .300 (.321 I believe) with a .394 OBP. What say you?

Two months in, and I can't say I'm dissatisfied with the way the season has gone. May could have been a bit better, I suppose, but I guess I don't really need to be that great of a team to win this division. poo poo, I'm the only one even above .500 at this point. In any event, with the 1/3 mark of the season approaching, I think it's time to retool the roster based on the results I've seen so far.

1. LF Joe Jackson

The Goog
Aug 6, 2007

It's a Goog Day, yes it is!
Smasher, I think there's been some confusion as to what picks the Mooglies have in the Super Draft. As best I can tell, here are the deals that I made involving picks (with the picks I have in parentheses):

- Acquired the Saints' picks for 1911 Harry Krause (Mooglies 1 2, Saints 1 2)

- Traded the Saints' second round pick to Cthulhu Dreams for 2003 Jose Valverde (Mooglies 1 2, Saints 1)

- Lost the Saints' first round pick on a failed challenge for 2010 Ryan Braun (Mooglies 1 2)

- Acquired the Landers' second round pick in the Collins-Ripken deal (Mooglies 1 2, Landers 2)

- Lost the Landers' second round pick in a failed challenge for 2007 Dustin Pedroia (Mooglies 1 2)

- Reacquired the Saints' second round pick from the Splinter Cells (I don't know how they got it) in the Delahanty-Key deal (Mooglies 1 2, Saints 2)

So as far as I can tell, I should have both of my picks, as well as the Saints' second. If I've missed something, let me know; sorry for the confusion.

Poughkeepsie! Right now I have Teddy Ballgame going to the Radbourns, which leaves you with the best player available being... either Pete Alexander or Harmon Killebrew. I don't know how much interest you have in Killer or Alexander, but if you're wanting to step down a few picks, Killer would still be there. I'd like to swap picks with you if that's indeed who you're after. I'll also include 1 rating challenge and my second round draft pick?

So Smasher, small sample sizes aside, should I let Niekro back into the rotation or ride Zambrano out? I am aware these are very poor options but those apparently are my options.

I'm not trading Jimmie Foxx for John Olerud, especially not across saves, but I'd do it for Mel Ott and your two.

Given our rising (plummeting?) draft position, it now behooves us to go SP in both rounds, starting whoever we get immediately in 4th and 5th slots.

We also need to platoon Lofton and Murphy in center, start Appling at SS, and use Worrell at setup. Dennis Martinez is a patch for the injured Passeau.

I approve these moves. I dunno, on paper this team should be doing a lot better (Schilling/Lyon failing aside) than the record indicates but, well, look at my team.

cbx, that really saves me some time but, and let's call it intuition, I think the Bangers will take a catcher with their own first-round pick, and pick players in the second-round in the following orders:

SP Spahn or better (this seems unlikely)
Joe Cronin
Willie Randolph
Votto/Giambi
Reliever. Not Remlinger.

And then, just a wild guess, I think the Phoenixes' exact preferences are:

Brett/Chipper
Killer/Papi/McGwire
Fred Lynn (why does Mogul hate Josh Hamilton so?)
SP Spahn or better

--Second round:

See above.
Votto/Giambi (please don't draft two 1B)
Cedeno/Sizemore/Carey
Reliever. Still not Remlinger. Or Dolf Luque, actually.
