I'm writing up a resume to work as a bouncer at some downtown bars: How does a bouncing resume differ from a normal resume? What ought I include about my physical attributes versus my volunteer/education status?

I plugged the wrong jumper into the wrong set of pins on the motherboard, and when I booted it up, the clock was going maybe a thousand times as fast as normal. I don't think that the performance was actually boosted, but I was concerned that I was going to fry something, so I got it shut down as soon as I realized my mistake. Oh poo poo, I just remember the first PC I built, an 800mhz AMD Duron had some jumper settings on the motherboard that had to be set for the FSB and memory timings (?). I wonder if that would be the cause of the problem, I remember you could have them overclocked pretty easily by having a jumper in the wrong place.

Photoshop CS5, I've got a line height / leading problem. Check out the text in that left side image (magenta, pink text, etc), and now check out what my leading is set to. Clearly something's up; no matter what I set my leading to, I've got like 8 spaces between lines, at the minimum. Somewhere I've overridden a default setting, but I can't figure out where. It's every font, not just this one. Edit: Damnit, nevermind: under paragraph settings under "add space to paragraph," I had like 160px in there, no idea why. jackpot fucked around with this message at 04:37 on Oct 10, 2012 |

Edit 2: That bastard, it changed it back. Something in Photoshop keeps setting my "add space to paragraph" to obscenely high numbers, which seems to be throwing off all my text. What's doing this?

I didn't want to have to resort to random guesses, but that list of black actors seemed pretty comprehensive, so... Dumb question: I was in the "identify that story/book" thread and realized a lot of authors writing for young adults seem to go by first two initials + surname. R.L. Stine, L.J. Smith, E.L. Flood... Is this out of sheer embarrassment for associating with the genre, scientific or historic knowledge that teenagers are just crazy for initials, or am I just picking out the only three who ever did it and thinking I have a pattern? E. B. White, J. K. Rowling, C. S. Lewis, A. A. Milne There are three reasons I've heard for authors using initials: 1. Name is too weird. Clive Staples, I'm looking at you. 2. Female. 3. Name is too common.

Thanks Unless you're a web dev/designer or want to be one, the simple rule is: don't. It's not going to look good unless you really, really want to dive deep into it. What purpose will the site serve? Go from there. Is it a creative portfolio? Use Squarespace or Cargo. Is it a personal blog? Blogspot or Wordpress are good. For almost all cases, I'd push either using Cargo (for portfolio based stuff) or Wordpress (for any sort of blog / simpler portfolio), and just find a good theme that someone who does it for a living has created.

Personally, I recommend namecheap for the registrar and hostmonster for hosting. Just my personal preference, though it's served me well. One thing to note and it may not need noting is that if there is any sort of sexual/pornagraphic content in play, you'll need to find a host that is cool with that. A lot just bar it outright / you'll eventually get an email giving a couple weeks notice to remove the offending content lest they shut down the site.

It's not the cheapest but Squarespace is fantastic for novice users to get a portfolio site going. They have pre-made portfolio templates already, and easy to use WYSIWIG builder (drag and drop), and if you do annual or bi-annual billing on the hosting they will give you a free domain. You can do a 14-day free trial with just an email if you want to check it out. http://www.squarespace.com/ If you really want to do domain registration seperate from hosting, name.com and namecheap.com are good and easy to use. Never ever ever use Godaddy, they're just pure garbage.

Does anybody have experience with setting up an online pledge donation form for a 501(c)(3)'s website? I may have a design job with a client who wants to set up a website for a city's proposed VA building and their primary concern is establishing a secure way to take online donations. The very first thing I found was Click & Pledge, which seems almost too perfect. I'm a little skeptical because I've never heard of them or Salesforce, plus they charge a monthly fee in addition to a comparatively high transaction/processing fee. On the plus side, it looks like I'd have some amount of control over how the donation form looks and could easily integrate it into the website. Then there's Paypal, which seems to offer the easiest method for both Paypal users and non-users and with a much lower transaction fee. The big drawbacks here seem to be a lack of integration (donors will be directed to Paypal's site), no recurring donations/installments, and the general stigma associated with Paypal. Every other service I've found so far is either account-based and requires a sign-in (Google, Amazon), or is even more obscure than Click & Pledge. I'd appreciate any advice, or if somebody could vouch for Click & Pledge that'd be great, too.

I use Gmail as my primary email service. My college recently switched to using Gmail's shell for the accounts that they issue students-- so your address is still <name>@<school>.edu, but it's technically a Google account. That's all fine and dandy, but now whenever I sign in to the school's site it logs me out of my personal account. This is naturally incredibly annoying because I often want to have my primary email open while looking at school files, and having to log in a dozen times a day really sucks. I've tried every option in the menu of both accounts, including linking the two. No dice so far. Is there a way to make it so that I can be signed in to both accounts at the same time? I already checked to see if I could simply prevent the school's website from automatically signing in to its email service, but they're connected. Signing out of one signs out of the other.

Ah, thanks for the replies. Using different browsers works, hadn't thought of that. For some reason the 'add account' feature at the top doesn't do anything on either account-- it looks like it's working, but afterwards nothing sticks. Maybe the service isn't supported. Anyway, the multiple browser thing will work.

Anyway, the multiple browser thing will work. You can always just go into the school account and tell it to automatically forward all received mail to your personal account. You can also go into the options in GMail and under "Accounts and Import" there's a section "Send mail as" where you can add other address. Gmail will send a message to the address you specify with a link to verify that you have access to it, and from then on you'll be able to send mail from that address from your normal account. Here's my question: When the label on a food product says "no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives", does that actually mean anything? If so, what counts as "artificial"?

Tiggum posted:Here's my question: When the label on a food product says "no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives", does that actually mean anything? If so, what counts as "artificial"? It does mean something! The FDA has a fairly comprehensive definition of 'artificial' as it applies to each of those additives. For example, here's what it has to say about artificial flavors: "The termartificial flavor orartificial flavoring means any substance, the function of which is to impart flavor, which is not derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof. Artificial flavor includes the substances listed in 172.515(b) and 582.60 of this chapter except where these are derived from natural sources." You can find the referenced list here. There are also defined groups of artificial colors and preservatives. It's also worth noting that various chemicals that can be found in nature will be labeled as 'artificial' if they are created synthetically. e: I just realized that you're not from the US and therefore 'natural' might mean something different on Australian products. I would guess it's still defined by your governing body, though. TheGame fucked around with this message at 02:54 on Oct 11, 2012 |

Tiggum posted:Here's my question: When the label on a food product says "no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives", does that actually mean anything? If so, what counts as "artificial"? That depends a lot on the laws where you live. In the US for example, "all natural" doesn't really have any meaning, whereas you can't put things like the USDA Organic or one of the kosher unions' logos on your packaging without satisfying whatever requirements they have. As for natural vs. artificial--again, in the US you can use the chemical that is responsible for a food's flavor and call it natural flavoring in the ingredients, even if it was synthesized in a lab. Say, isoamyl acetate, one of the major components of banana flavoring. Whether it's made in a test tube or extracted from actual bananas, you can still call it a natural flavor. If you created some other chemical that generates the same taste, but isn't in bananas, it would be an artificial flavor. I don't know whether the same can be said of food colorings or not.
