He's a Daemon Primarch. He's basically the closest thing to a literal physical incarnation of a god in 40k.

I have a bit of a question for those of you who are a bit more experienced with this literature and the whole "40k Universe" than I am, and apologize in advance if this has been discussed before. (A short perusal of this thread did not get me any results, but they might be there and I didn't spend enough time)

After having read the Gaunt's Ghost series, Ravenor, and Eisenhorn, along with the Ciaphas Cain series (and the Wiki), I can't figure out the purpose behind all the worship the Adeptus Mechanicus guys do. My understanding that they believe that the Emperor is part robot now and is their robot God and that he watches over the "spirits" in all engines and machinery. Does this mean that they don't really know how to fix anything or build new stuff unless they are some really important guy on Mars and just leave it up to the Emperor/the C'tan thing that the wiki says might be sleeping on Mars or whatever?

More often than not it seems like they don't really know what they're doing and just kind of assume that their cog-Emperor thing will sort it out if they just pray a lot over the engine. Or is this just the authors trying to show that the perception of the main characters of the story have very little understanding of the "techno-sorcery" that is going on when the tech-priests et al actually fix things?
You know how you used to blow into the cart of a NES game?

Also there was a fun comic about a marine's lost bolter floating around somewhere.

For the love of the Emporer what does it take to bring him down? Do they need to fire Pariahs with melta charges strapped over 90% of their body at him at this point?

Pretty much, it took a similar amount of firepower (and specifically designed chaos killing firepower) to kill Angron on Armageddon.

Just finished reading Heldenhammer and it was terrible, It was just an endless list of battles which boil down to and then Sigmar fought this group and then Sigmar fought the other group and then Sigmar fought some orcs. Really the characters were flat, the world building non existent (which is presumably what you want from a prequel) and there was not even any good Bolter Sword Hammer porn because most of the combat is glossed over. Do the other books in the Sigmar trilogy get better or are they all this bad?

Yeah, basically. It took over 100 grey knights sacrificing themselves to banish Angron back to the warp. So yeah, self destructing pariahs, psymatrix armed psykers, 6 of one, half dozen of the other

The Sigmar trilogy is pretty bad. It doesn't even really reveal anything about his godhood.

On the topic of machine spirits, the actual, working ones (as opposed to the souls the AdMech believe to inhabit every machine) are the product of an interesting bit of loophole abuse. They're basically AIs, yes, but they have just enough organic components to circumvent the ban on machine intelligences. A good way to think of them is as servitors designed for thinking.

I've never seen them mentioned as being organic in any way, but I have seen things mention that as long as it's not human-level intelligence it's okay. Same reason why Warhounds are mentioned as being like hunting dogs and Warlords like Bears.

No -- as far as I know, the "actual" machine spirits such as those you'd find in starships and titans don't have any organic components. They're just not intelligent enough to count as AI. The type of AI forbidden by by the Emperor/AdMech is the Kaban machine, HAL-9000 "have a conversation with you" kind.

The ban is on AI that emulates human intelligence I think, which is why titan AIs are modelled on certain types of animal.

I think AI in the way we know it is suppose to be okay so long as has organic/human components and therefore a soul. You could in theory have two machines running the same 'AI' program with one machine having to need organic components and another without with the organic one being acceptable to Mars (a Imperial robot has a human level of intelligence but is deemed okay because it contains organic components and thus a 'soul' despite the fact that you could put the same program in a non organic machine).

I also remember there was a comic about a Warlord Titan that had the Titan itself being a 'real' character to the Princeps controlling it. It wasn't some kind of illusion or psychic feedback but I think it was suppose to be an actual computer AI composed of all of the titan's programs and software.

Just go read "The Kaban Project" in Shadows of Treachery. It describes exactly what kind of AI is banned and why. It has more to do with having a consciousness and self-realization than "organic components".

I've been rereading Gaunt's Ghosts and came upon something that doesn't quite connect in Salvation's Reach.

The Dalin and Yoncy thing was confirmed AFAIK as a nod to the typo of Yoncy being a boy but what about the bits about Lord Chass and Vervunhive? The way they speak about Chass implies that he's alive when everything in Necropolis tends to pile on that he's wounded fatally and later, dead. Merity Chass is still heir too. Furthermore, there's mention of a Hess West sector and multiple statues of Gaunt, which makes me wonder if that's a typo or if that's just one of the new hives built to replace Vervunhive. It is awfully close to Hass West.

I believe that that was part of Damnation Crusade, a comic about Black Templars killing everything under the sun. The fluff and novels seem to (or at least used to) flip-flop a lot when it comes to the AdMech's knowledge of machines, the reality of machine spirits, etc.

Remember too that the Eldar managed to gently caress a Chaos God into existence, and while humanity doesn't have the Eldar's psychic quality, they definitely have quantity down pat. What do you think might happen when countless quintillions of fanatics, even the heretical ones, believe in the existence of machine spirits?

Nah, it's more like every chaos god embodies a number of aspects of behaviour, like Slaanesh is pleasure, decadence, passion, lust, pride, self-indulgence. The more souls doing that kind of behaviour, the stronger the god grows. In the Eldar time, they were the most numerous of all soul-bearing beings, and were quite stoic, until they went down into a gigantic orgy to empower slaanesh like never before. It's not like he was created then, but he was empowered.

Same goes with Khorne, Nurgle and Tzeentch. They cover most prevalent things in the 40k universe: pride, war, ambition/change, life/death. With untold trillions of humans all being assholes trying to get on top, dying by the billions and fighting thousands of giant wars at the same time, the gods are pretty drat set for power.

If a couple of trillion of dudes suddenly start to believe in the machine god or whatever it just means war, death and pride, so the chaos gods will like it anyhow.

Yep. Khorne didn't burst into existence because lots of people started believing in a God of War and made it so, but rather because lots of people were killing each other.

Read The Crimson Fist. Is Dorn being massively disappointed at Sigismund a retcon, or has it been established before?

I'm thinking of buying a new omnibus, either Word Bearers or Iron Warriors. Which is better? I loved The First Heretic, but I'm not sure how the former holds up, and Graham McNeil is a mixed bag for me.

Also, it's implied in one of the chaos fluff sourcebooks that the origins of the chaos gods were either as weaponized warp entities created by the old ones and the eldar, or else spontaneous products of that process, followed by a massive multisided war in heaven (along with the ctan, etc.) where most of the entities killed each other, with the survivors being the gods of the eldar.

I don't believe it's a "retcon" as it's not changing established fluff -- it's just a new reveal in the backstory.
