Snowdens Secret posted:These are generally true statements that no longer apply when you're in the military, especially the nuclear Navy, and you might get cut slack for being a little late if it's a serious blizzard, but calling in and saying "sorry my car can't make it" means one of your schmuck shipmates is going to be dispatched to go get you. Remember, if you don't plan to leave early to account for the weather, it's your fault. Snowdens Secret posted:Stationed in Groton there were at least two occasions that the boat demanded everyone come in in the morning only to tell us at muster that road conditions weren't safe enough to come to work and send everyone but the duty section home. Being a nuke, volunteering for sub duty, and volunteering for duty in guam were all the best mistakes I've ever made. I can't think of any other situation which makes me feel like it was a good experience to have, but so help me god if I had to go back I would fight to the death to avoid it. Seriously the best and worst time of my life. Anyone else been to/lived on guam? I'm curious what other peoples impressions were. I'm actually more interested in people that just visited, since it always seemed lik the epitome of "awesome place to visit, terrible place to live." Also, for the newer guys heading to the fleet, if you ever hear of talk about "getting keys taken away" just do yourself a favor and start going sad ahead of time.

I enjoyed my limited time in Guam, took advantage of the excellent diving and played a lot of golf (mostly at Anderson AFB). I'd rather be stationed there than at Pearl, where there are seemingly hundreds of flag officers, staff officers, and shore duty/squadron senior ncos who's entire life is patrolling the waterfront and reporting everything they see to your CO. Constant bell ringing, saluting, and all that Navy stuff. Reminded me of Norfolk, but with better weather. My previous sea tour was in Groton, and the atmosphere/tempo were better. Professional but relaxed, and the attitude was that the boats and missions were more important than squadron. The other way around in Pearl. Then again, that's speaking as a chief. When I was a younger sailor, I'm sure I'd hate it.

You guys must keep all the flags over on sub side. The only flag we ever see on surface side is MIDPAC, and he's not even a weekly sighting. If you're not his flagship or prepping for an inspection, you might not see a flag for an entire month or two.

I'd describe Guam as a minature Hawaii; the climate and whole tropical atmosphere is very similar, and Tumon Bay is like a scaled-down Waikiki (but with even more Japanese tourists.) The worst thing about Guam are the flights to get there. drat, the flight out sucks.

SUBPAC was right across the street from the sub piers, but the Makalapa facility (CINCPACFLEET and the other big guys) was closer to the sub side. Seems like every 5 minutes we'd be ringing the bell and saluting some admiral's barge/gig going by.

grumplestiltzkin posted:Any specific reasons? Theres tons of cool stuff to do there if you're only there for a little bit. Why was it so bad? The entire island is a run-down Hawaii-wannabe shithole where nobody performs even the most basic of building maintenance. The few buildings that aren't actively falling down due to neglect are falling down due to the inability to construct a sturdy and attractive building in a climate where it rains roughly five inches per day (generally accompanied by gale-force winds and with no notice whatsoever). The nightlife consists of the skeeziest bars anywhere in which English is spoken, accompanied by strip clubs in which no women that are even remotely attractive are present. It's unsurprising, of course, that there are no attractive women in the strip clubs, since there aren't any attractive women on the island at all, and the unattractive ones hate sailors along with all the other natives. Theoretically there may be some things worth doing during the daytime, but you'll never find out since Guam is a working port! Sure, flying home takes 24 hours, but Guam is US territory, so have fun working until the sun goes down. Hey, at least you'll get to out in town to go experience that fantastic nightlife. Oh, it's only a US port for purposes of working hours, though. When it comes to liberty buddy policy, it's a foreign port, so you better not think of leaving base on your own even though you're still in the US. At least you can roam the base by yourself, though! Wait, no, you can't, because Polaris Point is like five goddamn miles from all the base facilities. Have fun waiting an hour for a duty van to take you to the NEX. At least you can wait at the only place close enough to walk to--a tiny building with four vending machines and 50 people all trying to use a $30 Netgear router simultaneously. Even if none of this was true, I would still never want to go back for one single reason--it is the hottest place in the goddamn world. Every waking moment is spent drenched in sweat with no respite. You can't even get a cold shower in the morning since the potable water tanks are the same temperature as the surrounding 85-degree harbor water. Simple tasks like walking 500 feet to get off the pier are physically exhausting, and even standing topside making a phone call at 5AM got me sweaty enough to want to take another shower. If you are brave enough to want to actually PT in the morning despite the very real possibility you will die of heatstroke, have fun being physically assaulted by the most aggressive birds in the world as you jog along the sole road available for running. And of course, if you're lucky enough to be stationed in Guam rather than merely making a port call, your reward for putting up with the worst home port in the Navy is the highest optempo in the Navy! Have fun keeping your lovely 30-year-old 688 in working condition so that you can accomplish back-to-back-to-back forward-deployed missions until you're lucky enough to be so broken that you have to go into the shipyard. Hopefully the timeline for your shipyard time versus your PRD will work out so that you can take your family with you for the change of homeport instead of having to be a geobachelor with 9 hours time difference. You could offer me a $100,000 bonus to do a two-year Guam tour and I would turn it down in an instant. At least it's not Diego Garcia, I guess? The good strip clubs in the tourist district import hot girls from CONUS and asia because that's what the japanese businessmen come to Guam for- they want to play golf, shoot guns, and watch hot western girls strip completely nude, because they can't shoot guns or see western girls strip or any girls strip nude in Japan, and they fly to Guam for the weekend and do this all for about what it costs for a single round of golf in Tokyo. Meanwhile, their wives and daughters spend them poor in all the high-end shopping. You can- and should- be enjoying this all instead of taking a bus to the NEX, jesus christ.

You'd have a miserably loving experience on nearly any base in the world if you spent the entire tour/port visit/whatever within a short walking distance of your boat, letalone as far out as Polaris Point. Buy a car, seriously. Or if it's just a short visit, split a rental car with your buddies or something. Yeah, typically people don't have the ability to rent a car in Guam. Your shuttles are your only choice.

The strip club quality is pretty hit or miss. Gspot and Vikings are usually fairly decent. Foxxy's and Club USA are hit or miss, but the mamas are EXTREMELY shady. Do not go there if you are too drunk to know whats up. All the rest are low to mid tier, except for Crazy Horse. Crazy horse is where either strippers first come to the island because they dont know any better, or where they go once nonstop coke/heroin use burns them out. Its like a stripper gravceyard. It can be fun, just don't expect hot women. Also, theres a car rental place right by the nex on big navy. If your command wont let you rent, thats one thing, but its there and it rents to sailors. That being said, this: Cerekk posted:
is absolutely spot on. We hit something like an 80% tempo my first year, then stayed at or above 60% the rest of the time. And when in port, we spent nearly every day there trying to fix our busted rear end, refueled, should have been decommed shitbucket. loving loved that boat though, in a weird way, like a car with too many miles on the odo that just refused to stop running, but required constant shade tree tricks to keep it going.

If you're not broke your rear end is at sea, deployment year or not, and it's been like that for a good while. My first year was 80%+ optempo, that was ten years back and we never even left the Eastern seaboard. I don't know if they're already pushing the VAs like this, but I wouldn't be surprised. In the end the optempo is far less irritating than the completely retarded poo poo missions that drive that optempo
