Finally got moved downtown, here's some things from my first real attempt. The homeless man in the third shot started following me after he noticed I was taking pictures and then another guy joined him but they just watched me take pictures for a while then wandered off

I might bring it in on the right, possibly cut out the person walking. Also, personal taste, but I would turn up the contrast a little.

Agreed, portra is fantastic. One of the very best films we've left so keep buying it. :)
Also, nice portrait!

Yeah there's Provia 100F and 400X. You should try both of them out.

I tried Provia 100F and hated it, but I'll try anything twice. ISO 400 is a really nice medium format sweet spot for me. It means I can leave the tripod in the car.

Conversely I've just tried out 100F and quite like the results from it. But yeah ISO 400 is good for medium format cos we can use higher shutter speeds in lower light conditions so it's more versatile in that sense.

Thank you! I wanted her eye to run right to the corner of the frame so I tilted it a bit, some people hate that kind of thing but I don't mind it. Ironically this is one of my personal favorite shots in recent memory (her look, the empire state building reflection in between them, the goon with the tongue out) but people don't really seem that drawn to it. To each his own. Thanks for the comment.

Holy poo poo, I didn't even notice the Empire State Building. That's awesome.

To clarify, I don't exclusively hate tilts; it works really well in this shot. I just think they're usually superfluous. You'll always be better off taking the shot that you like rather than the the shot you hope someone else will.

Yeah, that's actually how I got the shot. I was tracking the building in reflections as I walked, viewing through the lens. This is actually a great reason to keep both eyes open when shooting, as I was taught to do when shooting a weapon... The woman came into view in my left eye's peripheral (lizard brain = Afro!!!) so I just framed her up and shot a few frames. The guy's expression was, as in lots of street photography, simply a happy accident well timed. The shots before and after this frame are crap :)
