Oh poo poo, a Haggar/Magneto/Doom player won? I play Haggar/Dante/Doom, I don't imagine there are match recordings but I'd love to compare notes. A rigorous schedule of attending every casuals session I can find in So Cal is really paying off but I don't have a good theoretical grasp on things.

2/3 buttons. The problem I seem to have is inconsistently dashing between forward, down forward and trying to dash before I'm able to and coming out with a move. Learning how to use the arcade stick I bought would certainly help but Its at my moms house so its unavailable.

Combofiend was in Brazil for the national 25th Anniversary qualifier last week and he dropped by our weekly ranbat to play some UMvC3 FT5 with a bunch of people. They are pretty good matches, so if you have some time to spare, there you go:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tygGtFlrWKo Bruno_Wizard (Chris/Haggar/Strider) x Combofiend

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZLNqj3nLCc Naiki (Tron/Frank/Iron Fist no it's his actual team not random select) x Combofiend

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49Z9kS8vH-4 DoomBR (Captain America/Spencer/Iron Man) x Combofiend

And since you guys were talking about Haggar/Doom, I just remembered about this set, also from one of the ranbats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvN81cDrVVA

I'm on 360 and I don't have live, unfortunately. How do you typically open people up with Haggar? It used to be random pipes and lariats got me all of my hits, now I'm actually controlling matches but it doesn't feel like I'm making the most of my mixup opportunities. I'm using more dL's, both after a dash in and to catch people trying to jump. In the corner I'll sometimes use L into Hooligan M or H if I think I have a good read, I've tried making it safe by calling an assist and the same time but I just can't get it to line up right. I want to go for more command grabs, particularly as AA and after they block Plasma Beam, but the timing is tough to hit.

you are right on track! i use violent axe for pressure pretty often lately just to keep the opponent in blockstun and maybe catch them doing something. same thing with standing pipe. i'm pretty bad at consistently executing piledriver in the air and on the ground. i like doing a normal jump giant swing against an incoming character sometime if i don't have time to properly set up left-right violent axe mixup.

i've been practicing with hidden missiles lately too, you can set up the H hooligan reset if you time it right

yeah sorry i'm not much help haha i start magneto then use haggar/doom to clean up if he gets killed (magneto throw + lariat match opener all day)

Has anyone EVER managed to land a pipe after Haggar's OTG? Every Haggar player I've seen tries to chain into it and just ends up hitting empty air.

Yeah 2 things dude. One, in Vanilla you could cancel dropkick into anything, but it didn't OTG. They adjusted it, but made it only cancel to forward pipe, but then forward pipe cancels to anything. So it's a more execution-heavy technique to get a cancel with only a tiny bit of the pipe startup animation coming out.

Two, yeah on some characters like Sent, in XF2 or 3 he can just loop OTG to pipe, but that's not what any Haggar you see whiffing that is trying to do.

If you're looking to just play, then play whoever you want. Watch some videos/streams, hit training mode to learn how your characters work and some combos, play people.

If you're looking to start getting competitive with the game, here's Viscant's (Evo MvC3 champion 2011) suggestion from the Brokentier blog:

quote:

For Marvel my advice is to start with Magneto-A/Doom-B/Sentinel-A. Most people would tell a beginner to start with something different like a Wesker based team where you can learn everything right away and win a little bit while you learn. I don’t agree. I think that as long as the person is committed to learning the game they should bite off as much as they can chew.

With Magneto/Doom/Sentinel you have a team that has 3 strong assists and a team that has both flexibility and rigidity. The team is flexible in that you can play many different styles. You can zone with Magneto and Doom or you can attack hard behind Sentinel assist. You can play a more air based game behind magnetic blasts or photons or you can play a ground based game around EM Disruptors, plasma beams or missiles. You might find you really like Sentinel assist. You might find you don’t need it that much because Doom missiles fits your play style so much better. You might find you really like changing the team order and putting Magneto in the back. Or maybe you’ll like Doom in back. Lots of options here.

But then you look at what the team makes you learn. Missiles and drones are both outstanding assists but you have to be smart about how you protect them. Triangle jumps and square jumps are great opening tools but you’re going to learn real quick how to deal with someone up-backing you or you just aren’t going to win much. Magneto requires work to get his combos down. Doom requires work just to move around the screen. If you’re going to use TAC combos (and you should, all 3 of these characters have great TACs and infinites if you want to go there) you have to learn that also. The rigidity comes in how you have to actually sit down in training mode and work at the game. You’ll see results fast, it’s not like anything here is on Viper levels of difficulty but the team will make you put some hours in on training mode. So really the absolute best part is that the team will teach you how to play Marvel and how to improve your game. The biggest lesson a new Marvel player can learn is that it’s supposed to be hard. The moral of Marvel is that it’s pretty easy to pick up and play but the cutting edge stuff is always much harder than it looks. If you really want to get there you have to put in the time so you might as well start with that mentality.

And a great benefit of the team is that it’s a team you never have to leave. You may find you like something better and want to play other characters and that’s great. But you never really have to leave the team behind.

I'm trying to learn Storm to fall back on when Haggar is a bad matchup, mainly I have trouble with Cap, Magneto, and Zero. Anyway, the Storm threads on SRK look like they haven't been updated since vanilla, anybody have cool Storm combo knowledge? I've been doing the two reps of jump cancel to instant air lightning attack just for simplicity, this seems potentially unreliable on small characters, should I learn the main combo in the new testament or something different?

What is the best way to chain to air S for the hard knockdown? MMHS works some of the time, I know I have to jump and hit that first M as fast as possible but sometimes the S still whiffs and it seems to be related to how the ground chain juggles them.

If I do a team super Storm recovers well before Dante runs out of bullets. Is there anything cool I can do here or am I limited to just tacking on lightning attack x3?

If you don't want to bother with the teleport combos, the one I use is:

2L 2M 5H 6H qcb S ADUF ADDF H S (to cancel flight) S jMMHS purification chaotic flame.

It does decent damage without being too timing specific. Just know that you'll need to move slightly upward after canceling into flight to get above the "no dashing" mark in the air.

It's been ages since I've played, but one I was using was:

d.L, d.H, S, H xx Flight, L, H, Black Hole, H, S, Purification, Chaotic Flame.

You can do another Black Hole, H after the H if you're in X-factor.

The only thing weird about this is that Nova's still on point, right? Because a bunch of characters can infinitely punish assists already. I know Dormammu can with purification (shoutouts to b0lt) and Mags can with his launcher. It's just kind of hard to set up without getting stuffed
