I usually just lurk D&D but this ad got me to post here. I find it horrendous that it assumes that gay parents will see their child fall and calmly walk up to it and just stare at it without emotion like a pair of gay robots.

I posted it on my FB wall mentioning my disdain for the ad, and I'm currently awaiting responses from horrible people (usually hardcore GOP supporters and people thinking that abortion = murder).

I always thought that people who opposed homosexuality thought all gay men were sissy girly boys, though I guess I shouldn't be surprised that they'll happily change that image to one of traditional masculinity the moment it becomes politically convenient.

I think that people watching that video 50 years from now will interpret it as having the complete opposite meaning.

Is Marriage what adults demand, or what children need?
Obviously the child needs his loving fathers.

Nah it'd be a kid striking out at home plate, getting tackled brutally in football, missing the game-winning kick in soccer, and drowning in a pool. The clip would then show two stone-faced lesbian mothers staring at their helpless child as a mother AND a father raise their winning child on their shoulders and fireworks and streamers fly out and a giant sign flashes "MARRIAGE".

Ah, but he would not have a ~STRONG MALE ROLE MODEL~ to teach him how to be a man! Boys need a daddy to teach them how to play sports and be emotionally crippled, and mommies to teach them how to expect women to support them unconditionally and unquestioningly. Girls need a mommy to teach them how to apply makeup and be emotionally unstable, and daddies to protect them as property and teach them that they're not allowed to make decisions unless a man tells them it's OK.

Of course, they can't always admit that their opposition to gay marriage is partially rooted in the idea that it would break down the tradition of forcing "traditional" gender roles on children from birth, so that they will grow up to force those roles on their own children, or that they'd rather have boys and girls growing up in abusive households that lead them to being completely unstable individuals for large swaths of their life than risk the chance that the kids might grow up to do the "wrong" gender's stuff.

Also, your typo is nearly perfect - it's right between "nurturing" (what anti-SSM types think a woman's only purpose in life should be) and "neutering" (what they think growing up without a father does to a boy).

hey guys what is happening in this thread
I can forgive the president for leaving our ambassador stripped of his security detail, even thought the British and even the Red Cross had pulled out, deeming the area too dangerous. I can even forgive the president making the wrong decision about rescuing the CIA guys who fought their way into the compound, rescued the survivors, and held off attackers for another five hours, waiting for help that never arrived. Perhaps they were abandoned to avoid risking other lives - perhaps hoping to avoid political fallout - we may never know.

But I can not forgive Obama for trying to cover up these mistakes, playing politics afterwards, rather than coming clean with us. Jimmy Carter had the guts and integrity to give us full disclosure about the failed attempt to rescue hostages. We decided he had been president long enough, but we respected his efforts. Obama has orchestrated a massive cover up of the conditions leading to the attack, of his actions and decisions during the attack, and of the reasons for the attack. If that's OK with you, that he will let people die, and blame others rather than take responsibility, then go ahead and vote for him. I can not.

I know it's been posted before, but I think it's hilarious (or depressing) that the GOP has managed to spin the Benghazi ordeal into a cause for impeachment, but GWB invading Iraq and Afghanistan was a-okay.

Also, to contribute, my mom asked me if I was voting tomorrow, and I told her of course. Her boyfriend is mega-conservative and she has labeled herself as a Republican, so I asked if she was voting for Romney. When she said yes, I asked her why and she told me that she "knows in [her] heart that Obama hates Israel." No need to be concerned about what Romney/Ryan are wanting to do to Medicaid (which she will get on next month) or Social Security, we need to vote on our support of a country that doesn't need our support!

I think a lot of people are confused about the events of that night. The Fox News version makes it sound like two Navy Seals disobeyed orders, fought their way into the besieged compound Army Of Two style, then held off attackers for 7 hours until they were overrun, all the while calling for help.

In fact, when the attack began, a CIA annex a mile away got the call for help. They organized a quick reaction force of about a half dozen CIA security personnel, packed up, and left 24 minutes later. They were delayed at a militia checkpoint, where they attempted to obtain some machine guns from the local militia. It didn't work out, so they dismounted and proceeded on foot, accompanied by a number of Libyan militiamen. They entered the compound and rescued everyone who was still alive at that point, and brought them back to the CIA annex.

Later at the annex there was a mortar attack, one of which killed Doherty and Woods who were emplaced on the roof of the building with a machine gun.

The embassy in Tripoli organized a force of CIA security, US military, and medical personnel, and flew them to Benghazi who, with Libyan forces, evacuated the CIA annex.

All the while, US quick reaction forces were deployed from the US east coast and central Europe. By the time they reached a staging area in Sicily the annex had already been evacuated. The reason forces were deployed from outside of Africa is because there were no available forces anywhere near Libya.

Boohoo, CHRISTIANS ARE PERSECUUUUUUTED.

quote:

Subj: Hobby Lobby

Column: Christian companies can't bow to sinful mandate
By David Green

When my family and I started our company 40 years ago, we were working out of a garage on a $600 bank loan, assembling miniature picture frames. Our first retail store wasn't much bigger than most people's living rooms, but we had faith that we would succeed if we lived and worked according to God's word. From there, Hobby Lobby has become one of the nation's largest arts and crafts retailers, with more than 500 locations in 41 states. Our children grew up into fine business leaders, and today we run Hobby Lobby together, as a family.
We're Christians, and we run our business on Christian principles. I've always said that the first two goals of our business are (1) to run our business in harmony with God's laws, and (2) to focus on people more than money. And that's what we've tried to do. We close early so our employees can see their families at night. We keep our stores closed on Sundays, one of the week's biggest shopping days, so that our workers and their families can enjoy a day of rest. We believe that it is by God's grace that Hobby Lobby has endured, and he has blessed us and our employees. We've not only added jobs in a weak economy, we've raised wages for the past four years in a row. Our full-time employees start at 80%above minimum wage.

But now, our government threatens to change all of that. A new government healthcare mandate says that our family business must provide what I believe are abortion-causing drugs as part of our health insurance. Being Christians, we don't pay for drugs that might cause abortions. Which means that we don't cover emergency contraception, the morning-after pill or the week-after pill. We believe doing so might end a life after the moment of conception, something that is contrary to our most important beliefs. It goes against the Biblical principles on which we have run this company since day one. If we refuse to comply, we could face $1.3 million per day in government fines.

Our government threatens to fine job creators in a bad economy. Our government threatens to fine a company that's raised wages four years running. Our government threatens to fine a family for running its business according to its beliefs. It's not right.

I know people will say we ought to follow the rules; that it's the same for everybody. But that's not true. The government has exempted thousands of companies from this mandate, for reasons of convenience or cost. But it won't exempt them for reasons of religious belief. So, Hobby Lobby — and my family — are forced to make a choice. With great reluctance, we filed a lawsuit today, represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, asking a federal court to stop this mandate before it hurts our business. We don't like to go running into court, but we no longer have a choice. We believe people are more important than the bottom line and that honoring God is more important than turning a profit.

My family has lived the American dream. We want to continue growing our company and providing great jobs for thousands of employees, but the government is going to make that much more difficult. The government is forcing us to choose between following our faith and following the law. I say that's a choice no American — and no American business — should have to make.

David Green is the CEO and founder of Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.

HEY Mr. Green, why doesn't God approve of loving price scanners or having more people on the registers?

BTW you do realize that many religions DO have this choice, right? Mormon polygamists think they have the right to child-bride and have many many wives. The government says No. The polygamists do it anyway. They made their choice. And now no one will stand up for the poor owners and millionaires of the Hobby Lobby.

You have to understand, when these people say 'aid' they don't mean saving the people, they mean as soon as the president hears that an American is dead he should have instantly started killing Libyans in retaliation. Aid means revenge, not aid.

Well, they aren't. So who cares what you believe.

Besides, I wonder how many drugs they're ok covering that could kill or harm a fetus if taken by a woman who doesn't know she's pregnant? I wonder if that's ok though, because she's taking them for other reasons, and it's a well known fact that women only take birth control pills cause they want to get all slutty.

One thing I'm dreading from Obamacare is the inevitable decline in abortions; not because I love abortions (cause I don't), but because of the inevitable twisting by "Pro-Life" groups who try to attribute the decline to their actions rather than the increased availability of birth control.

Another Facebook gem from one of my racist-rear end in-laws:

Well the day I have been wating for so long to come is finally here tomorrow. Even if my guy loses, I will no longer post political messages. When I was younger and did not pay attention, I did not get so caught up in all this and it did not matter so much. At least I thought it did not. But now that I am to the point where I am planning for retirement, I am seeing that politics has a much big
ger effect on my life than I thought when I was younger. For years presidents did not really effect our lives that much, mainly because they were mainstream in their thinking. What I mean by that is they thought like most of us, whether it be Democrat or Republican. Unfortunately this president has been so liberal in his views and his politics and he has managed to implement policies, even without the approval of congress and ignoring the rule of law, that are so outside the mainstream and actually hurt people in many ways. I know people who cheat the government now, and feel they deserve it. How does this happen? Because the president elected by the majority has a re-distribution mindset, and has relaxed the food stamp requirements and the government doesn't even care if you are trying to help yourself, it is all about votes. When I was younger and trying to make ends meet in the military, I was below the poverty level for sure and could not access government help no matter what. Now people lie on their food stamp application and laugh all the way through the check out line at Walmart. What a dam shame. When I look back at 2008, I have to say I read about this candidate and I knew enough about his past which told me I did not want this person having any impact on me and my family's lives. Minorities did not elect Obama. Poor people did not elect Obama. There was enough people like you and me out there that did not even bother doing any research and fell for his hope and change and all the other crap he was slinging at you through a main stream media that would not vett him and still will not even tell you about the incompetence of his administration and the hurt it has caused, including the deaths of really great people just trying to chase a dream. I hope those that voted for him last election do some real research this time and do not vote on all that hope and change crap like in 2008. I bet I could sit down with any of you who did vote for him and list the things that I refer to as bad for the country and you would actually agree. But will you vote for him again? That is the real question. When you pull that lever I hope you think about even one thing, like the in excess of $200,000 every working man and woman over 18 in this country now owes towards the federal deficit he has run up over a four year period. This can all change and I really hope when you vote you that you vote for real reasons and if you vote for Obama that you vote for him because you understand his policies and the harm it will continue to do for the rest of your life. If the majority of the voters actually re-elect this president, then they deserve the outcome which will be something you never even imagined, just like the last four years but far worse. I doubt that many that voted for him even fathomed what he was going to do over the last four years. So go vote and think about Uncle Gary bitching an moaning about the stupid election. If he gets re-elected everybody will be bitching and moaning for a long time to come. Lastly, no matter who wins the election, Obama will be dealt with by an honest congress. See ya.

The worst part is that almost this whole family votes against its own interests by voting Romney. Most of them are lower-middle class, middle at best. None of them are pulling six-figure incomes, let alone incomes that Romney considers average. One is a small business owner that got the funding to start her small business through a government grant for the physically handicapped (she's partially deaf). Their county's economy is depressed (and several of them were laid off) when the local glass plant closed because shipping its manufacturing jobs to China and Thailand was a better investment than updating its ancient equipment in America. Almost every single one of them has received welfare during their lifetime, but all they do is complain about people on welfare and how it's socialism.

There is literally no way to convince someone that they are voting against their own interests when they are so swept up in conservative rhetoric that is literally engineered with the sole purpose of manipulating the uninformed, the undereducated and the easily frightened into voting for someone that doesn't give one single gently caress about them. As much as you want to hate the people being manipulated for not doing one inkling of research, or for even listening to the facts, you also know that you are witnessing someone being taken advantage of. It's brainwashing, and it's sad, and it's enraging.

I had a kid walk out of one of my classes (American Government and Politics, college level) when I informed the class that, "No, Thomas Jefferson was not a practicing Christian. He was a mix of things, but mostly he was a Deist who believed Jesus was a prophet but not the descendant of God." She stood up, called me a liar, and never returned. She also didn't drop the class. She appealed the F I gave her (she missed 26 days of class, 3 exams, and a paper) on religious grounds. I was never even called to defend the grade by the chair.

These people... THESE loving PEOPLE. I then asked if anyone else in the class would be offended discussing the religious background of our nation. I was very proud when one guy actually said he would be... because he was atheist and didn't believe we had one. :911:

:ninja: Edit: Worth noting that I don't really discuss my personal political beliefs in my classes and I try (best as I can) to keep my biases from it. I also have an open door and open discussion policy. If she was actually offended she could easily have seen me after class, or raised an objection. I think she was just a lazy, entitled bitch whose parents told her not to go back because I was brainwashing her with my liberal academic bias.

What would happen if EVERYONE prayed for Mitt Romney?

Battle of Lepanto, eh? Was it group Prayer or the fact that the Christians had more than double the guns (Naval battle, guns -> cannons) even though they had about 40 less ships? Or the fact that Ottoman casualties were very likely due to there being double the amount of soldiers on the ottoman side in the aforementioned amount of ships? That the 40 more ships that the Ottoman had were smaller Galliots whereas the entire Christian fleet bar 6 were Galleys? Or was it that the Ottoman side mistook the 6 Galleases, big old flagships with many guns, for Merchant ships thus turning the momentum of the battle early?

I also like to note that the study that they cite does not exclusively prove that Christian prayer works, it also looked at other forms, for example Reiki and Qigong.
Never mind that the entire study was just a data-mine/sort.

The whole site is a hoax anyway. It was a (really well done) Poe. It actually convinced a pretty not insignificant number of people.

#12 is the best by far. "I don't really think the government should be involved in marriage, but while they are they should definitely make a law respecting an establishment of religion."

"Uh, guy... First Amendment."

"CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION!?!?!"?!?!?!?!?!?!!!"
