You can never trust a celebrity to retire when they say they are going to retire. Think about how musicians had a farewell tour, only to decide to get together one last time for the road, and then we'll record a new album, and hey, maybe we'll get together again, and hey, we'll make a second album. The only thing I wonder about is the physical toll it takes on Arino. Let's be honest, staring at a small screen all day, sitting still, doing menial repetitive tasks for little thanks... Arino really hosed up at this whole celebrity gig. He's basically working a regular office job, except they film it. To think, he could be cavorting around with models!

Is there a website listing games that GCCX doesn't have the rights to? I seem to recall a AD saying something about this in one episode, and I'd like to see what games we won't ever see Arino play. Also, a minor nitpick, but the OP lists episode 104 as a NES game, but it's a SNES game.

I know about some of the differences, but its one thing to read about changes and another to see some of it translated. I'm not super eager to see Arino and crew be super bored by a game I love (though I totally understand, I doubt it makes good TV) but I am really interested in seeing all the differences between the two versions. I don't know if this is asking for spoilers, but I'm genuinely curious, do they mention anywhere that its a remake of a computer game?

Some parts of the game makes more sense in the original too (like the hobo demanding "coffee" with his "donut".) I don't think they do. I checked the game intro part and there's no mention of it.

I am glad to see that up to season 10 is completly subbed. I can't wait to see the gaps. Watching the Pokemon Special got me interested in the Mendel Palace episode. I also Can't wait to see Pulseman get subbed as well (Pulseman is another GameFreak game). We are also close too closing up to season 12. Hope the rest of season 11 gets subbed soon so that all the early episodes are subbed for all too watch. Congratulations on GCCX being 10 years old. I can't wait to see what they do for episode #150.

I don't think GCCX even runs full seasons compared to regular shows, does it? Arino and his Yoiko partner Hamaguchi seem to do a fair amount of variety shows with AKB48 off-shoot groups. I saw one on YouTube where them, some other comedian (I think) and possibly a FujiTV announcer had to memorize the faces of some idol group, then walk around a mall-like thing looking for them and had to correctly guess their names. At least with this show he gets to sit down and eat snacks all day.

So when all the episodes are translated and new ones stop coming out do you guys have any plans? Are you going to start translating a new show and continue operating as a group? I don't really watch anime or japanese tv but if you guys start translating a new show I'd probably give it a shot. A big part of why I don't watch anime is the obnoxious subtitling cliches people in this thread make fun of every once in a while so I don't wanna lose a translator group that actually gets it.

Nowadays this isn't as big of a thing--most of the currently airing shows are "professionally" subtitled, which (regardless of common criticism) are pretty high quality. There's also a fair number of established groups that do good work. This kind of poor subbing is a lot, lot more common in j-drama/live action shows. I don't really know why that is, but subbers for that medium tend to lag behind anime by 5-10 years in terms of quality.

Most j-drama fansubs I've seen have been really good. Occasionally you get one that doesn't seem to grasp basic English and one that actually had commentary and emoticons by the fansubber, but it's only happened a few times with stuff I've watched. I think a general rule of thumb should be nothing is ever as bad as SA makes it out to be.

I imagine that, if the show continues, they'll eventually start looking at consoles that were new when the show started but vintage now (e.g. PS2). I really want to see him play one of those crazy-hard shmup games, and I also want to see him play any fighting game with really bad SNK Boss Syndrome, and his reaction the first time he enters into an unwinnable round. Bonus points if they give him some obscene amount of 100-yen coins to play on an arcade machine and he blows through it all.

I missed this before but there isn't a real way to be certain what the show is able to get. That said, you can make some really good guesses on what they have the rights to use since it's generally going to go along the lines of companies. For example, when they got to use Human in season 6 they did S.O.S. and Clocktower soon afterward. Same thing for Out of This World and Flashback. As a general rule, they're able to use Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, and Konami. There might be other licensing agreements that interfere (I suspect that Treasure was the hold up one certain Sega published games, for example). Bocc Kob posted:He only does this show once a week or so unless they need an extension. I don't think GCCX even runs full seasons compared to regular shows, does it? They shoot an episode every two weeks but there's also arcade trips and segments so it probably does amount to a one day a week gig for him squeezed in between a lot of other work. Season 15 and 16 are more than a full season; they've been eleven month long seasons with the skip weeks covered by specials like the USA and Asia trips and the Birthday challenge. ExiledTinkerer posted:Heh, even if a day arrives that GCCX is totally done, I guess there's always the porno version---who knows how far that will go into the future! How many times did they actually mention rights on the show? I remember two: getting the rights to Septentrion, and losing the rights to Tokimeki Memorial. I would suspect there are three types of games that won't make it to air: --games with rights issues, --games that won't make particularly good episodes (which hasn't always stopped them), and --games Arino finished before the show began (I've long wondered why he hasn't featured the first two Zelda games, and this is my conclusion).

We ended up forming due to a mutual love for GCCX, not because we wanted to fansub something, so I have a feeling we'll disband once everything has been subbed... but that's not going to happen for a while.

I dunno how common practice it is among GCCX fans, but lately I've been trying to acquire myself some of the games featured in the show just to see how I'd fare against Arino, like The legend of mystical ninja which I didn't own yet. I even contemplated on getting myself a Famicom just to be able to get my hands on Bio miracle or Quest of Ki.

And apparently the Japanese PS2 I bought from NCSX isn't actually as Japanese as I thought because it won't run the DVDs for me to capture from.

I've also bought Famicom games after seeing them in the chronological showcase. ETA: Gotta say, Mighty Bomb Jack was the most unexpected pleasant surprise. If you like retrogaming at all then a Famicom is worth it since it's the system that defined Japanese gaming in the 1980's and there's a lot that just didn't get to the US. Unfortunately there's a few games that they've played that just don't have any cheap version available and one where the only versions available are the Famicom Disk System and Japanese Virtual Console. And if you want physical media then things start getting even worse. Not to mention that if you want to get the exact versions that Arino played things got phenomenally expensive in season 15. Five of the games go for over $100 on the back market. BTW, getting the Famicom version of Biomiracle is really expensive. It's one of the last carts released and in high demand. The Disk System version is more affordable but it does require having a Disk System and given the problems with those it might be cheaper to just pay for the cart up front...
