I recently found about this new cartoon Disney greenlighted called Shezow. It's about a boy who finds a magic ring that gives him superpowers and a costume. Only thing is that the ring was only meant to be worn by girls, so the costume turns him into one. The concept is definitely interesting, to say the very least, but I'm curious about the execution, which is definitely going to make or break the show hard. Have you guys heard of it already? There isn't really a whole lot about the show on the internet, just some discussion, creepy fanart and the IMDb site. The only thing certain is that I am staying the gently caress away from bronies and tumblr when discussing the show.

Wow, it's like they took one of those creepy transformation fetish comics on the internet and made it into a show :psyduck:

It looks like it's going to offend everyone: since his female side is ridiculously stereotyped (a lipstick lightsaber? seriously? :crossarms:) more liberal people will hate it for gender stereotyping while conservatives will hate it because trannies.

I don't give a poo poo what net creepers think about it or draw from it, unless it starts showing up when I'm looking up something unrelated. But it's disappointing that someone dared to bring up these subjects in a kid's show but probably won't be able to use it to do anything constructive.

Yeah, they really wrote themselves in a corner with that one. On the one hand, the costume and powers being so overly girly is kind of the point of the whole thing, he probably wouldn't complain as much if he'd turn into a tomboy, but on the other hand many people will find it incredibly offensive. I mean, the target audience won't probably mind, but the creators will definitely get an internet-induced shitstorm.

I think it could be avoided.
Let's say he was part of a team of magical girls, so desperate they pull in a boy for whatever reason.
First, now they can make the design less girly because he's part of a feminine team, immediately identifying the feminine aspect without needing as many trappings. He can be challenged by the transvestite transformation without just becoming "girly", most boys would be horrified to join a team of girls even though a team of boys with a token boyish girl is a common trope.
Especially if he's NOT the leader. There are words in the English language that's only purpose is to denounce the very idea of being led by a woman.
And then he has the rest of the team to talk about gender identity issues with, the other members who have been young women all their lives but are also challenged since fighting and proaction, no matter how you dress, are masculine traits.
Stakes are higher since you are beginning with the premise of a team that's so hard up for members that they have to break an unthinkable rule to continue.
Also you have more lead heros so more opportunity for merchandise, win-win.

They did what they did so it's moot. (Also, the reason I could pull that idea out of my rear end is that it's some poo poo I came up with when I was 15 or something). But genderal issues in fiction... I've thought about it a bit and it's hard to discuss due to people getting silly with them.

Genderal Issues don't really need to be all that mature to be handled.
The least expected is to just say that feminine and masculine are not be-all end-all choices, that you do not have to be one or the other, and the other gender can actually think and make decisions.

Well, Hirsch's recent interview about Gravity Falls kind of implied Mabel and Dipper will switch bodies in an upcoming episode so once Disney starts airing that again you may or may not be able to add another show to that list.
Gravity Falls treatment of that kind of thing has already been a little controversial, or at the least frustratingly boring compared to the rest of their jokes.

IMDB posted:

Twelve year old, Guy Hamdon accidentally becomes a superhero, but the ring that gives him his powers was only meant to be worn by a woman. So whenever there's danger, Guy transforms into SheZow, a kick-rear end female superhero with big hair, high heels and a beautility belt that houses various super weapons concealed inside feminine products like laser lipstick and vanishing cream. Guy's aunt Agnes was secretly SheZow for years, until she died. Then Guy's family inherited her home. In the basement, Guy found her secret lair and her power ring. Well, actually his twin sister Kelly found the ring and was about to put it on, when Guy snatched it from her and and put it on, as a joke. But once on Guy's finger, the ring was stuck and he will forever be SheZow, a powerful superhero with super strength, super speed and a 6th sense called She-S-P. Guy would rather not wear pink spandex and a tight skirt, but it seems a small price to pay for such she-mendous super powers.

Complete. loving. Disaster.

I think I've seen the whole guy-in-magical-girl-team-thing in some Fanime already. And by that, I mean there's one "episode" of the whole thing and nothing more. The concept sounds like it has potential, though.
Again, I think I could work, assuming they won't gently caress it up, which is tremendously likely. However, the more I read about it, the less faith I have in it. I mean, that loving IMDb description? Really? The only way this could have been worse is if they'd said "She's one she-roic she-male".

I'm just really curious what the internet will think of it once the first couple episodes hit. I mean, we already have terrifying fanart.

Edit: Here's the intro for the show, and here's the original short it's based on, which initially ran on Shorty McShorts' Shorts. From the looks of it, it's just gonna be a generic hero-cartoon for kids, just with this really loving bizarre premise.

Edit 2: The short again, but in much better quality.

Because children's television doesn't have enough gay panic in it.

I actually prefer Yonic's idea to make a show about a boy who becomes the reluctantly-included "token" member of a girl team. You could even have the girl team be ashamed, and try to disguise or underplay the fact that he's a boy.

You could actually have a lot of fun with that premise. If you played your cards right, right-wingers would see it as a satire of how feminists already treat white men, and left-wingers would see it as a satire of gender roles, and an inversion of how men in American society treat or regard women.

The original premise itself isn't terrible, just fraught with peril. There are about ten million ways to do it wrong.

I'd say the biggest problem with this sort of show concept is that most of the humor involved would probably be stuff that the kids in the target demographic just wouldn't get. A show's no good if it can't reach its target demographic.

^ There's probably enough space for material appealing to a younger audience. The whole social commentary doesn't have to be it's prime focus, plenty of shows during the 90s did a pretty good job at handling this very subtle.

I think a good place to implement that reverse token member concept would be a Super Sentai series. It's probably against the rules or something to usually not have token girl in a Sentai team, and you could have a lot of fun experimenting with that premise and the different tropes around that format.

I'm just not sure what target audience SheZow is supposed to have. Boys probably won't like it because of the heavy focus on girly stuff, and girls probably won't like the fact that the main character is a macho kid. There's probably shifts in attitude and personality to be had, and we don't know how it'll play those factors yet, but if they aren't careful, chances are it won't appeal to anybody.

By the way, are 52 11-minute episodes normal for a new IP? That seems incredibly risky.

1:55) OH GOD KILL IT WITH FIRE! :stonk:

2:30) It was around here that I realized that his voice didn't change. Is he still a guy then or what I don't even

2:44) So... Women have a spider sense that they can feel in their ovaries?

2:48) 1) gently caress you some kid being tied to a tree is not superhero level "danger"! 2) Blowjob TV? :quagmire:

3:18) Yup! There's that vicarious awkwardness I've been expecting. :smithicide:

3:46) Slap based superpowers gently caress me...

4:25) I hate you show... I hate you!

4:55) Jose you are too stupid to live. Though if he ends up the legitimate love interest in the series proper that would be pretty loving hysterical. Hell. Going that route would actually give both characters legitimate depth. I'm pretty sure I'm giving the show too much credit though.

I would have loved seeing a second season for Wolverine and the X-Men. According to the creative team, the next season would have included Deadpool and Magik.

I never got why Marvel never did a New Mutants series. X-Men Evolution practically was that, a bunch of teenage mutants being superheroes (and yeah, they eventually added the New Mutants), but I wanna see a legit show. Marvel and DC cartoons are too busy being trapped in the 80s or earlier to include someone as modernly popular as Deadpool. Even in the 90's he was too busy playing second fiddle to MR. 90'S XTREEEEEEME incarnate Cable (who did make it into X-Men somehow). Other than Black Nick Fury they stubbornly refuse to update even slightly in cast, design or storyline, and then are surprised when the success of their films or shows don't translate into book sales despite their books not matching the movies.

Batman fans waited for more than two decades to see Cassandra Cain or Stephanie Brown in other Batman media, and instead we got Barbara, Barbara and more Barbara, to the point that when the New 52 rolled around they reset 20 years of character development to put her back under Batgirl's hood because fans "demanded," it.

I wasn't a big fan of Wolverine and the X-Men, but I was so happy it was willing to take a chance on some of the more current characters like Domino. And then it got canceled. RIP.
