Does Mogul even model that properly? Sounds like it's inviting your AI manager to put in a fictitious pitcher. Not that the Oranges getting relegated because of such tomfoolery isn't what they deserve, but still.

The game is smart enough that if one of your rotation guys is injured the mopup or long relief guy gets the start instead, and the fictitious pitcher moves into the mopup/LR slot.

The game does model the dropoff in quality from using 3 man rotations.

:Sirens: The Tornados are really good guys.

Analysis!

Two games back with a month to play? Anyone's game! Felix came back in time to get injured, so he hasn't had a start. Your draw is probably a bit easier, so with some luck you can do this.

Analysis!

Bill james has this bit about the biggest comeback ever, in which a minor league team that is going 21-5 is ruled to be 0-26 due to not filling out some paperwork. This has to be close.

Analysis!

You're probably doomed, but you can get this back. You have to play the Tornadoes 6 times, but so does everyone in your division ahead of you.

Analysis!

Despite a weak division, you're not really in the running. A good draft pick is a potential. Though with a weak division anything is possible.

Analysis!

You can do a miracle mets style dash for the finish here. You do have 3 games against the splinter cells vs the mashers 1, which means your 2 game lead is more like a tie, but the 4 games against the suicides wil help, and no-one else is that good.

Analysis!

A tough draw and some subtle tanking will get you ted williams!

Analysis!

Welp.

Analysis!

I'm not sure what went wrong, but you are tied for 1st overall draft pick, so that's something atleast.

Analysis!

Eliminated.

Analysis!

Not all is lost. Of the remaining 8 series you have, 5 of them are against the worst teams in the league! If you can go 2-1 against the bloggers at away, you'll be in with a solid shot.

Analysis!

Your team is pretty good. Your draw is a bit nasty with the Torandos, and some other contenders. Hold on, this is gonna be close.

Analysis!

You have the toughest draw in your division next month. Put your best lineup in the field.

Analysis!

You've already mathematically eliminated 40% of your division. I'm not sure what to say. Rest all your key starters for the playoffs.

Analysis!

Tied for 1st overall pick.

Analysis!

It couldn't be closer. You both have 3 games against the Splinter Cells, but you have an extra day off.

Analysis!

Probably too far back to make a run.

Analysis!

As discussed. Tornados are just too good.

Analysis!

Unlucky I feel. Your team is pretty good, you need a catcher and a 3B guy though.

Analysis!

It couldn't be closer. You both have 3 games against the Splinter Cells, but you have one less off.

Analysis!

Your hitters couldn't get it done.

Your OBP vs OOBP

.331 vs .340

Your SLG vs OSA

.428 vs .437

It's close, but that's the difference between sub and above .500 ball.

IF they actually sat on the bench for a month it might, but the AI manager will sub them in to games as pinch hitters and defensive subs approximately every game. You'll cut their PAs for the month by 1/2 to 2/3rds at a guesstimate.

There's a scoring system that goes along with it, and gingemidget, who will be running the contest, can tell you all about it.

Indeed I can!

For the Gauntlet, scoring is easy - every team you correctly pick to advance gets you two points. It's a little more complicated for the playoffs: For each game, you need to pick a) the series winner (worth one point), b) the number of games in the series (worth three points), and c) the score of the last game in the series (ten points if correct, four points if within one run for either team). No one got a correct score last season, for what it's worth.

It's a little complicated, but you guys just need to make picks and let me deal with the summation. I'll try to get a score update up after every other update (i.e. a Gauntlet round and a playoff series).

Two more things for this round: The first round of the playoffs is only best of 5, and could you please put your team banner in your post when you pick; it makes my life a whole lot easier.

Okay, last update of the regular season! Awesome. Also, there's not going to be an update tomorrow because you guys could use the extra day to get your rosters/pick 'ems in and I could use the break.

Well, actually, it's not a break for me, because I'll probably spend tomorrow editing a bunch of rosters for the Gauntlet anyway.

I hate the Super-League.

Super-League VII, Smasher League Week 26: John o' Groats

No games of the week this time because none of them were-

: Hold the loving phone! No games of the week means no chance for me to give my victory speech.

Listen, Mark Grace, I think that-

: I don't give a poo poo what you think. I'm going to give my speech now and you all are going to listen to it.

Fine.

: Once again, the Bobbleheads have done the impossible because we kick that much rear end. We are the Senor Goodtimes, Television, and Heavyweight Champions. Oh, yeah, we're also the reigning Super-League Champions. Oh, and because that's not enough, we also just set the record for the most wins in a regular season. We have just had the greatest run out of anyone in the Super-League anywhere, and that includes the Skyhawks, or any of Marauder's teams, or anyone! We are the best ever. And why is that? Because we just kick rear end. We don't have a loving gimmick or a weird-rear end speech pattern, or any of that poo poo, we just come to win and then we do. And I know a lot of you will say that my predilection for doing things like participated in a shark rodeo counts as a gimmick, but gently caress you! That's not a gimmick, that's a way of life. This who baseball poo poo, that's just something I do to kill time in between shark rodeos and the running of the bears, and hunting the most dangerous game...man-spiders. Those are my real passion, because, just like Patrick Swayze in Point Break, I'm still trying to find my own perfect wave and-

Wait, didn't Swayze end up dying while trying to surfing the perfect wave?

: Who the gently caress cares? I also decided that our team needs a new theme for our playoff run. As you know, last season we used Semisonic's "Closing Time" as our anthem, because that was a big hit in the late '90s, which was right before the world starting sucking big time. This year we're going with Vertical Horizon's "Everything You Want", because we are everything you want, we are everything you need, we are-

Yeah, okay, that's enough.

Anatomy of an Unstoppable Winning Machine: Chicago Bobbleheads

The Bobbleheads won 108 games this season. How the gently caress did that happen?

Well, the scored 903 runs or 5.57 runs a game. That was a big part of it.

But, for the hell of it, let's find out together by dissecting their roster.

Catcher
'40 Rudy York (.274/.346/.439, 27 2Bs, 16 HRs)

Rudy York is pretty bad defensively, but when you can hit like that, it doesn't matter. York has been a bit inconsistent in the Super-League, but he's usually been one of the better hitting catchers around. It looks like his bat was able to carry his glove this season.

First Baseman
'91 Mark Grace (.344/.397/.481, 45 2Bs, 14 HRs)

Why is Mark Grace so good in the Super-League? Well, the sliders I use tend to drag down power hitters so that the league isn't dominated by sluggers, giving an opportunity for high contact/patience hitters like Grace. He also has the advantage of being able to deal with both deadballers and normal pitchers. Grace can hit the former thanks to his contact skills, while he very low K rate also protects him against post-deadball era pitchers.

Second Baseman
'40 Charlie Gehringer (.326/.389/.456, 19 2Bs, 9 HRs)
'94 Craig Biggio (.245/.291/.382, 10 2Bs, 6 HRs)

Gehringer has roughly the same skills as Grace, except he plays 2B, which is pretty great. Unfortunately, he's also old, so he can't play every day, and that's where his platoon mate Biggio comes in. Biggio is obviously the weak half of the platoon, but he takes a lot of pressure off of Gehringer, who otherwise wouldn't be able to keep up his offensive pace, because he's 37 years old, and players that old just can't handle the middle infield every day.

Third Baseman
'06 Alex Rodriguez (.219/.287/.322, 21 2Bs, 15 HRs)

A-Rod did have a good season in Super-League I, but has now sucked for something like six seasons straight. Why? Same reason that Grace and Gehringer don't suck. A-Rod is a power hitter with middling contact and patience. With power nerfed, A-Rod has to rely on those skills to survive, and, well, he can't. Then again, I have the feeling that blakelmenakle can live with that trade-off, and it's not like he has any spare third basemen anyway.

Shortstop
'06 Derek Jeter (.323/.377/.414, 12 2Bs, 10 HRs, 16 SBs)

Kind of a mixed bag. Jeter has enough contact skills to hit well over .300 (although some of that is because he plays in Wrigley, which is a hitter's park), but he doesn't really do much else. He does draw some walks, but isn't much of a power threat and is pretty shaky on defense. Then again, a shortstop who hits .323 is never going to be that bad, no matter what analytics you use.

Left Fielder
'99 Brian Giles (.259/.370/.453, 6 2Bs, 9 HRs)
'40 Hank Greenberg (.215/.285/.364, 19 2Bs, 11 HRs)

I'm not sure that Giles could have kept up the pace all season long. As for Greenberg, one of these days, I will find out why the game hates him so much. Still, he's Hank Greenberg, and given that the Bobbleheads won 108 games, he can't have been that much of a drag.

Center Fielder
'07 Josh Hamilton (.330/.377/.526, 18 2Bs, 17 HRs, 12 SBs)

I don't know that Hamilton will ever do this well again, but, looking at his stats, I can't say this line is that crazy. Hamilton is that good of a hitter, even if, just like in real life, he doesn't really draw many walks.

In fact, based on these results, I am now convinced that the Cubs should sign Josh Hamilton to a contract. That would work out great...even though Wrigley Field is literally surrounded by bars. Maybe it's not such a great idea.

Right Fielder
'06 Gary Sheffield (.246/.338/.361, 17 2Bs, 13 HRs)

Sheff's old, not much in the field, and isn't really an elite power hitter anymore. Still, he can draw a walk, and that was good enough. He will be out for the playoffs, though.

Designated Hitter
'15 Babe Ruth (.304/.412/.513, 28 2Bs, 29 HRs, 114 BBs!)

The biggest factor in the Bobbleheads' success is probably because they had four starters with OBPs of .370 or above. In the Super-League, that's pretty incredible, because walks aren't usually easy to come by. Ruth drew 114 walks this season. In league where there are a lot of deadball pitchers who never walk anyone, that's one of the more incredible stats I've seen.

SP1
'91 Greg Maddux (20-8, 3.47 ERA, 220.1 IP, 103 Ks)

Maddux, in his prime, was incredible, and the Bobbleheads' defense, while not great, was good enough to keep him afloat.

SP2
'99 Jason Schmidt (12-3, 2.89 ERA, 127.2 IP, 110 Ks)

Well, I guess we can say that the Bobbleheads-Juggernauts trade that was made back in Super-League I was a success for the Bobbleheads, since they're still using Schmidt and Giles six seasons later. I'm not sure how Schmidt did this well, but sometimes you just get lucky.

SP3
'94 Tom Glavine (14-6, 3.68 ERA, 193.1 IP, 121 Ks)

After season after season of Glavine sucking, and sucking hard, looks like the law of averages finally caught up with him and force Glavine to finally turn in an adequate performance.

SP4
'06 Mike Mussina (16-7, 4.64 ERA, 174.2 IP, 107 Ks)

Not good, but good enough.

Bullpen
CL '79 Goose Gossage (7-3, 2.61 ERA, 82.2 IP, 61 Ks, 45 Svs)
SU '06 Mariano Rivers (3-5, 2.64 ERA, 85.1 IP, 54 Ks, 8 Svs)
SR '93 Larry Andersen (5-1, 3.13 ERA, 60.1 IP, 39 Ks, 6 Svs)

This is a big reason why the Bobbleheads were 34-17 in one-run games. Once they entered the late game with a lead, they didn't blow games very often, with their top three relievers blowing 6 saves combined. That's probably not sustainable over the long-term, but it's still pretty impressive.

In summary, the Bobbleheads had a great offense, and a great bullpen that let them win way, way, way more one-run games than anyone else. The first might be part of a trend, the latter is probably more luck.

Then again, to win 108 games, you need both luck and skill, and the Bobbleheads had them both this season.

Team Statistics

Analysis

What more needs to be said?

Analysis

Not your best season, but you're doing a lot better than a lot of teams, 14 teams in fact. I know that your team can win three rounds. Have faith, CVE, you're still alive.

Analysis

Well, you may be headed to the Gauntlet, but at least you managed to knock the Landers out of the playoffs.

DiMaggio needs to come back in for the Gauntlet.

Analysis

Ortiz or Giles? My own preference would be to put Giles in RF and cut bait on Henrich.

Analysis

I don't know that Williams for Guerrero was a good move, especially since you would have had a reroll coming. Still, what's done is done, and you only have to get through four rounds. It's not likely that you'll survive, but it's definitely possible.

Analysis

The Potatoes must die.

Analysis

I'm really, really, really hoping that you don't have a miracle run in this Gauntlet.

Analysis

You win 100 games and you get...NOTHING!

Yeah, I guess we will have the wildcard next season after all. If it makes you feel better, your Pythagorean record was better than the Bobbleheads.

Analysis

Much like the Megaman enemy that is your logo, it was only a matter of time before you took a metaphorical Mega Buster shot to your face and exploded, leaving behind only a health container as a solemn reminder of your existence.

Analysis

The Clemens-Brown trade was not the best move you've ever made.

Analysis

Good season, good job, see you in Super-League VIII.

Analysis

Much like Edge, your career is about over.

Analysis

Back to the playoffs with you. Let's hope you do better than you did in the EC.

Analysis

And now you'll get the pleasure of facing the Bobbleheads in round 1.

And no, Alexander won't be ready for the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Analysis

Two rounds. That's all you need. Two good rounds.

Analysis

Game over.

That reminds of one thing that I was meaning to post. Now that we've completed Season 7, I present to you:

:siren:The Complete Numerical History of the Super-League: Regular Season Edition :siren:

This is a complete record of every Super-League team's regular season win-loss records, season-by-season. Koop maintained these records previously, but I've updated them through the end of SLVII.

A record in bold indicates that the team made the playoffs that season.

Congratulations to the Cultists on achieving the highest winning percentage ever for a new comer to the league. As Smasher noted in the last update, the Bobbleheads broke the record for most wins in a season with 108. The Luna Landers get the infamous achievement of being the only team in league history to win 100 games and not make the playoffs. As a warning to those of you participating in the pick-em, despite hitting over 200 HRs, the Idaho Potatoes had the second lowest winning percentage in league history. Looking at the all-time win count totals, don't expect anyone to ever catch the Finger-Bangers, Bobbleheads, and Eazy Ws in those counts. Even to break onto that list, the Oranges and Unicorns (who are closest of the active teams) will need another season to catch the Sonics. However, both teams will have to escape from the mid rounds of the Gauntlet to guarantee another season of life.
