Ugh. Local Walmart was bone-dry at Midnight.

They said all the systems there were for pre-orders. I'm guessing they sold the "non pre order" ones before the 12AM time. :/

Best Buy and Target have no lines at 2AM local time. I don't want to sit there for 6 hours, fall asleep, and wake when they have ~20 people in line (and only 10 systems available).

The 5 gig number came from a tweet from Geoff Keighley, but he doesn't mention how he came up with that. He may just have gone "Golly I only have [3 gigs/27 gigs] left, that must have been a 5 gig update!"

Wal Mart trip report!

Called a smaller Wal Mart just outside of town, guy in the electronics section said there was no line but that they'd have Wii U's at midnight. Got there around 7:30, and there were two people in line in front of me. They weren't being clear about how many units they actually had, which made me nervous. So, I stayed and my wife booked it to another out-of-the-way Wal Mart.

My wife was the first one there. Dude in the electronics section seemed to actually grasp what was going on, so he started a list. Wife got her name #1 on the list, and was told she just needed to be around at midnight to get it. They had 6 premiums and 6 standards.

So, my wife came and picked me up from the first Wal Mart, and we killed 4 hours or so at the second Wal Mart. It was painless. The last premium spot on the list was full at about 11:00. There was really no reason to get there as early as we did, but we both felt more comfortable just sticking around.

Now I'm watching a progress bar! Happily! :)

Hey, in all fairness the console itself wasn't mentioned at all and shown only in the background during the press event.

Went to the Heights Walmart in Houston, they were only given 5 units (and only 1 Deluxe). I got a basic. I can't decide if it's worth it to try and score a deluxe from Target in the morning.

Try different security settings and make sure it's 2.4GHz. This thing does not like 5GHz access points.

In what way is it not connecting? Are there any altered settings in your router? (Ports blocked?, restricted MAC addresses?...)

This loving thing supports 802.11n right? I mean, isn't the WiiU - WiiU Controller running over a modified Broadcom 802.11n standard? It would be horribly retarded if the console only support B/G and the controller N.

Part of it, I'm sure, is frustration that you have to sit there and watch a meter with your new toy, but this particular patch is Nintendo literally finishing more than half of the system's online features hours before launch. It's not a good way to start your new system, especially when you're trying to say "We finally GET online" like Nintendo has.

It's a good deal better than Keighley's unexplained 5 gig number.

The overall firmware installation was announced by Iwata himself to take up about 5 gigs even prior to updating. You can't calculate the size of the update by looking at the space remaining, which Keighley may well have tried to do.

Well, sure, you're welcome to zero in on Geoff Keighley's estimate of the file size if you want and pretend that negates the criticism that Nintendo shoved a bunch of the Wii U's online features into a large, slow-downloading, launch day patch. Along with the weak launch titles, it's just not a good first impression and made me glad I didn't run out and impulse buy a Wii U. Maybe you think that's a "worthless" point to make, but Nintendo isn't doing as well these days and really need to knock this one out of the park.

I really am kind of curious about this. It's hard to gauge because I spend a lot of time here and follow various gaming sites, but like with the Vita and 3DS before it, I'm getting the impression that there's not a lot of awareness about this thing.

You just know that when MS/Sony do their things in 2013, they're going to advertise them until you're sick. I saw an ad for Wii U in a theater, but other than that, nothing outside the usual niche sites. I get that Sony pretty much threw Vita under the bus, but it's interesting to me that Nintendo didn't do an absolute blitz on the Wii U. That "word of mouth" approach on the 3DS didn't work, and the system only took off after slashing the price almost in half.

You'd think this thing would have its "Wii Would Like to Play" commercial. Everybody had seen that commercial. They remembered it. It was memorable. But even the one commercial I saw in theaters didn't really communicate what made the Wii U worth it.
