You're pretty much stuck with eBay or Cash Converters for consoles, however. If you just keep watching, every now and then you'll see something slip by for cheap.

Just got pointed at this thread, I will certainly be spending a lot of time here. I'm a little more about raiding Goodwills and the like than buying super-obscure stuff from Japan, but my current issue points me in that direction---so I'm currently on the hunt for one of the early NES cartridges that have a built-in Famicom converter. In the GCCX thread, it was pointed out that the #1 identifier for one of these carts was the particular way the contacts are shaped, with the "pin" at the side of each contact instead of the center. However, I've run across a couple of those at a local shop that have the correct contact pins, but the wrong set of screws on the back (three hex screws instead of five flat-heads.) Is there any information as to whether or not these have the converter?

Is there any information as to whether or not these have the converter? I found a couple of them by taking every rule into account: 5 screws that are flat-heads, the offset pins, a different center of weight than other carts of the same game (easier to figure out than a difference in weight). I think one of the ones I found was a Gyromite, and I also identified it by the shade of the color of the purple Rob head on the cart. I had a few guides open in different tabs on my phone while I was in the store to help me figure it out. I looked for mine at Al's in Seattle a few years ago, and they had a good half dozen Gyromite and Hogans Alley carts each. After spending 20 minutes playing with the carts, the two I picked out both had the converter in them. I think I used this guide: http://www.racketboy.com/retro/hacks/gyromite-nes-import-adapter-guide

For those of you that have ordered on Rakuten, how long does it usually take before the store contacts you to confirm your order? I'm seeing that a lot of items that I submitted are "sold out", which I'm guessing means that they're putting the order together right now.

I have never found a Famicom converter, and I have like four or five of those five-screw games that supposedly have them -- even Gyromite.

Goodwill and Saint Vincent De Paul are like the cream of the crop on Stores that just don't give a gently caress about anything. I make like a couple hundred dollars every year selling Christmas Village buildings one eBay because SVDP prices them at 5 dollars regardless of condition or brand. There are a lot made by LeMax and Department 56 that are old and not made anymore and if you can do minor repairs sell for like twenty to fifty dollars. I found the (in)famous ASCII masturbater controller at one for all of a dollar once too despite a cursory google search revealing its worth a bit more than that.

You know, there was a nice little window there when everyone assumed old games weren't worth any money since everyone in the world can emulate them, or maybe it was because "lol nobody will want to play an SNES or PS1 game in this day and age", who knows, but around '99-'04 places were practically giving poo poo away. It seems like one day a copy of Final Fantasy 7 or Chrono Trigger were maybe $5 and $20 respectively, and then suddenly one day I started seeing them for more like $70 and $100 without warning. Or maybe I just wasn't paying attention. This depressing observation is brought to you by the fact that I bought Suikoden II for $7 and sold it for probably 50 cents. Twice.

The second one was mind-bogglingly boring though, it looked and played about as dull as actual medieval combat probably was. I'm not even going to look it up, I'm sure they're both expensive now too. You'd think I would have learned to always hang on to everything, ever, from when I traded thousands of dollars (in today's market) worth of Magic cards for a guitar amp back in '99. I kept that poo poo in good condition, too. Luckily I got the nostalgia-buying out of the way before prices erupted. Does anyone know if the german version of Terranigma on SNES has an English text option?

In my case, years ago I traded several NES and SNES games for a pittance of credit at a game shop, in order to afford cart-only copies of Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger. On one hand, I still got out pretty good since some of the games I traded in were pretty meh, and it was probably the highest amount of money that NES carts could still actually be traded in for back then, and I did make out very well with what I got, both of those RPGs I still love dearly. On the other hand, I had dumbly traded a few gems I still loved such as Kirby's Adventure, and also Super Mario All-Stars. Which I especially regretted when the latter ended up being pretty expensive in stores after that, considering how I got about as much as for an NES game when trading it in. So I guess I was fortunate in that other than that occasion, I was usually pretty good about hanging onto things(or at least finding much better places to sell them!), and I still didn't lose much compared to others in learning my lesson. What really stung, though, was another situation that was more accidental. I was keeping all of my Earthbound stuff, as I had been fortunate enough to get it new back in the day, and it was neat! However, at some point I lost the big box in a move, and then the player's guide got damaged in the rain.
