Just when we all thought that beer ingredients couldn't get any weirder, someone goes and brews a beer with sea urchin roe and tomato water. That someone is Jason McAdam at Burnside Brewing, though, so it might actually be good.

Anyone going to Zwanze Day in Orlando this Saturday? Just got my ticket! I don't have much in the way of trade, but if any goons want to meet up, I would be up for it. Actually, I do have a bottle of Tequesta Brewing Company Dubbel Dutch that I could bring for a trade/share if interested. Everything else I have is available in Florida.

I'm doing the Zwanze Day in Oakland. I went to the one at Russian River Brewing last year and there was a big line before the place opened, an hour before tapping (at least 50 people), they handed out little vouchers to the people in line to make sure everyone got a bit, etc. We called the bar doing it in Oakland and they weren't even going to open before the moment kegs were tapped-- hopefully they are taking our advice to talk to RR about what to do. I bet there'll be an even bigger crowd.

I'll be doing Zwanze day in Chicago. I didn't get to go last year, but I'd be hard-pressed to miss this year's - $40 all-you-can-drink for 8 hours (including Fou Foune!) with the taplist that West Lakeview is promising is pretty nuts.

Glasses on sale 10am, taps start flowing at noon. Zwanze tapped at 2, Fou Foune tapped sometime before 4 (per Kristina). The '2oz Zwanze pour' in the event is actually 2oz guaranteed, but you will almost certainly get a second or third pour because these are 30L kegs and even Chicago won't pull 500 people to this. Has anyone here had Victory's new beer Red Thunder? It's their Baltic Thunder aged in red wine barrels. I had their Baltic Thunder last night and comparing it to this tonight I feel as if the red wine barrel took a lot of character from the beer. It's not as if the oak or wine dominate, they're blended well with the beer, it's that the beer just seems very mellow now, a former shell of itself. The intro has cocoa, vanilla and coconut while oak and citrus are on the mid-taste, and the finish is a tad try with fruity wine and some cocoa, but everything seems dull.

I've got one last package to drop off when I get out of work today, and then all the Bolt Cutter will have been sent out. I think everything should get there by Friday too if you believe Fedex's estimates! And I Don't Like You, they didn't allow me to send something wrapped in paper ( ), which is why it's randomly double boxed. Just FYI.

Are Maine Beer Co. beers worth buying? It looks like my state is about to start receiving their stuff, but I see a lot of people complaining that most of their beers are too expensive for what you get.

In the end I didn't need to do it anyway, since I only bothered covering the box due to it having beer logos and poo poo and I think it's only the USPS that doesn't like that, not Fedex. That makes sense, even if I did tape the poo poo out of it and the Fedex guy could have been less of a dick when telling me it wasn't allowed. Oh well,  .

Edit: Looks like New Belgium is shaking up the lineup quite a bit. Replacing Belgo with an Imperial IPA, Somersault with some kind of Belgian blonde, and Snow Day with a White IPA among other things. I'm skeptical of the IIPA, I haven't found aggressively hoppy beers to be their forte at all (see: that recent Alpine Super IPA collab). And Snow Day owns, sad to see that one go. Peeper is a solid pale, one of those things that gets a little more hype than it deserves. Zoe was okay. But I loved MO. Granted, I've only had them during a short trip to Portland but I think they're worth checking out. Also, they may have the best labels in the world.

Best label? Maybe most minimalistic. Also I enjoyed Zoe but not enough to spend another $7-8 for their other offerings. I would rather spend $4 and get a larger bottle of something by Jack's Abby, tbh.

If you can't sell it to me on the shelves, I worry that you can't sell it to me after I try it. That's obviously not a hard and fast rule (FFFs), but bad labels can delay me from buying your stuff. MBC? God, I'd buy their poo poo all day were it available just because it looks so pretty on the shelf. I'm partial to that minimalist concept (love GI's Three Sisters labels for the same reason), but I think MBC is definitely helping their cause by not putting something ugly out.

Klosterbrauerei Weissenohe Monk's Christkindl. Tastes like Samuel Adam's Winter Lager but all-around better (i.e. its basically a traditional bock). And significantly more expensive. I bought it because I thought the bottle looked cool.

Had a tapping from Lightning Brewing yesterday at my work. Of the four beers we poured the Black Lightning Porter was really a standout, nice smooth taste with a bit of chocolate and a little heat. Glad to see them expanding out of CA. For reference we had Porter, Electrostatic (Biere de Garde), Thunderweizen (hefe) and Amber Ale. They were all above average. Definitely worth a shot if you're into any of the styles they are brewing currently.

Lightning actually has a double IPA now, which is weird in its own way since Lightning's method of differentiation was making German lagers and British bitters (even the Black Lightning is a lager brewed Baltic Porter).
