I thought I had quoted only the Red Thunder part, and not the Brown Shugga part as well. I'm waiting for Red Thunder to arrive, but after hearing a lot of the reviews I'm not sure I'll pick up more than a single bottle. What It Dooski posted:Red Thunder. Most of the stores in my area (Columbus) have cases of Brown Shugga laying around. I'm kind of jealous, all the places in my area (Akron) sold out of Brown Shugga almost instantly upon getting it in. Red Thunder was pretty underwhelming, but then again I was expecting much more. It's got the chocolate flavors from Baltic Thunder, but the oak and dry red wine are overlying the entire thing and sort of suck out the base beer. If that makes sense.

Good prices and tasty brews. Crappy food, but good deals on the flight. Any place on the strip for good beer is going to be douchey and over priced.

Just as a reminder I'll be having a tasting at my place in Ann Arbor on December 15. Thinking of a 5pm start time, we can get pizza ordered or something midway through. Look for a PM if you expressed interest, gonna try to get a headcount.

New joint "Black Bottle Brewery" opened in town last weekend. They're brewing their own beers and also having an enormous number of guest taps. I haven't been yet, although the opening weekend tap lineup is ridiculously good. But really... one of your flagship beers is called "Bitches Get Stitches"? I really hope I'm just missing a joke or reference Tap list posted:Black Bottle Brewery HIPSTER

Sort of raises an interesting topic. We've all see beers that try to grab sales through out-there names or bottle art or both. They usually aren't very good beers. But would you ever pass on a beer that was really good, just because it had in incredibly asinine "out there" name? Not just not want to order it at a bar, but fully with hold your business so as to not support such a lovely name / label?

No. Same goes for an incredible band with a horrible name, or a killer restaurant in a terrible location. The art will, more or less, persevere through poor peripheral issues.

As discussed a few pages ago when I proclaimed my love of Maine Brewing's labels, how you present yourself- either via labels, brew names, advertisements- is a critical decision. If you want to try and sell me your fantastic IIPA called Fart Juice using the phrase "For all Hopheads!" as the catch-phrase and slap a poorly photoshopped picture that your 8 year old drew as a label? Good luck. But that tells me a lot about your company, respect of your potential customer, and frankly whether you have a goddamn ounce of business sense. People can say "craft brewers do it because they love it!" all they want. If you treat it like a hobby or an inside joke, good luck staying in business for more than a few years. And if you're not treating it seriously as a business, I'm doubting you're much of a brewer.

A couple of other places that are good: Big Dog's Brewery, Draft House, or Cafe. They're one of the best local breweries, with an especially great pale ale and several good IPAs. Joseph James Brewing Company - they only do one tour a month, typically on the third Saturday, but it's $5 and has free samples for the duration. Their IPAs range from mediocre to okay, but their stouts and other darker, heavier stuff is quite good. If you want to stay on the Strip, The Pub at Monte Carlo offers the best price:selection ratio. Be warned, though, they have dueling piano karaoke on weekend nights. Public House in the Venetian/Palazzo complex is significantly more expensive with slightly better selection and a cicerone complete with ridiculous facial hair. The food is very well done and on the high end of Strip-expensive for bar food. Avoid Todd English's Pub in City Center - the food is awful, the beer selection mediocre, and the in-table taps are Pabst. Such a crime against beerdom should not be rewarded with patronage.

Not just not want to order it at a bar, but fully with hold your business so as to not support such a lovely name / label? Personally, I might try the beer, but it makes me think a lot less of the brewery. Case in point: there is a brewery near Portland called Walking Man. They make a DIPA called Homo Erectus, which is a clever name for a beer given the name of the brewery. Using "Homo Erectus" as a starting point for other beer names was where it gets offensive. Their Black IPA was called Big Black Homo. Feeling that this wasn't going far enough, they released a beer for the Holiday Ale Festival in Portland called Santa's Little Black Homo.

Well a corollary to that is that if a beer name / label makes the 11 year old inside of me laugh then it will stick in my mind. Case in point However this is very hard to pull off correctly.

Also, they have a really bizarre and bad video up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0H9hVP8kYDI A buddy of mine LOVES NB's Snow Day, and he's really sad that they're discontinuing it after this year. So for Xmas, I'm gonna buy him a big sampler pack of other black IPA's so that hopefully he can find a new favorite. The problem I'm running into is I don't drink a lot of BIPA's, so I don't really know what to get him that's also available here in NC. Some stuff I've picked just based on ratings: Fort Collins Black IPA Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous 21st Back in Black Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet or Lubrication Laughing Dog DogZilla New Holland Black Hatter The only one of those I've actually had is Back in Black. Comments on these or suggestions of others I might look into? As for local stuff, there's Duck Rabbits ABA, but that's a whole diff. animal than Snow Day. The same for Olde Hickory's Raven IPA, which I like, but wouldn't say is very similar to Snow Day.

bartolimu posted:Is terrible, and gently caress Main Street Station. Downtown smells like dead hooker, is full of cut-rate tourist traps and horrible, stinky, low-ceilinged casinos, and is generally unsafe and awful. There are much better places to go. That's hilarious because the strip is more victim to this "cut-rate tourist trap" phenomenon on a grander scale. The tacky cheese factor is what makes downtown great, and I've always won bigger in downtown than on the strip. People go to Vegas for different things; I'm sure casino ceiling height isn't at the top of your typical tourists' priority list. Also, for a city that runs on tourism, downtown didn't seem that unsafe to me. I mean, compared to East LA where I grew up or the south side of Chicago, it seemed pretty tame. Amazingly enough, I was accosted the most by homeless people in Toronto, but what do I know? (Except all about crappy beer apparently) Triple 7 deserves a chance, they change up their brews frequently and you won't burn holes in your wallet. The opinion that it is terrible isn't fact or objective. Just merely an opinion. My personal experience with the beers there and me enjoying them is also opinion as well. I mean, I know Yelp isn't THE barometer for beer guides, but their Yelp should be checked out just to get a feel for what other people think.

But it's loving Stone, that goes without saying Snow Day's more malt-forward and chocolaty. I'm not sure Black IPA is even a great term for it, it's more of an American Brown or Porter IMO. Besides the Stone suggestion, see if you can find Firestone Walker Wookey Jack, Deschutes Hop in the Dark and Sierra Nevada Tumbler (Tumbler's not the same style but I bet a fan of Snow Day would like it. May be hard to find now that it's Celebration season, though).
