Haha I recently met the guy who originally wrote that sample. He is annoyed that it still exists, and has wanted them to re-write it for ages. It dates back to well before the original xbox shipped apparently.

Wooga is still expanding quite a bit (we kicked out the people who rented the third and fifth floors of the building; only two more to go and it's all ours ) and we've got some pretty chill (in terms of work and workload) positions:

2D and/or 3D mobile artists, a number of Business Intelligence/Analysis/Product Management types and for iOS engineer. Lots of expanding going on right now.

Also a solid position for a 2D artist with experience with Hidden Object games. You & I would be working together on something kickass.

Eh, I could have simply posted a link to the job page, oops.

In BI & Co we're looking for...
- Product Managers
- Data Engineers
- Data Scientist (a bit of a weird name, but I was told that the previous job title they used for this caused a lot of problems since they were getting the wrong kind of candidates)
- Game Analysts.

I can have your profile brought directly over to the recruiters, so contact me as above to fast track an application. As a note if you think you can apply to multiple positions... that's perfectly good. Our recruiters look for where you would best fit, rather than try to peg you into whatever hole you applied to.

Epic is also the poster boy for crazy overtime. It sounds like people also appreciate it there I think due to big bonuses? Being a president probably required him to be at the studio pretty much 24/7.

Speaking of I wonder what Cliff Bleszinski is up to? I'm guessing with his recent interest in the Indie game market possibly going that route? Or maybe attempting the Hollywood route because he's really into the glamor of games. Now that it's mainstream, it'd be a good opportunity to try.

Tax breaks for games and training announced in autumn statement

Chancellor's autumn statement brings good news for UK creative industries with a 25% tax relief and £6m fund for training

George Osborne has confirmed that the UK's video game, animation and "high end" television industries will benefit from a 25% tax relief from April 2013.

The chancellor had already promised some form of games industry tax breaks as part of his March 2012 budget, but gave no further details at the time. In June the treasury released a statement claiming that these would be, "among the most generous [reliefs] in the world".

Every little bit helps I guess? Funding training can bugger off though, there's already a sea of talent here trying to be scooped up.

same, I've heard from some friends who worked in the area that with the hours come some pretty regular (more or less monthly) and significant bonus checks.

though the crunch at epic never struck me as horrific from what i'd heard. 50-60/week seemed to be the norm from those same friends. I was doing that in Austin and still had a life/managed to get married. Kids would extra-complicate things for sure. Though it likely would depend on your situation and responsibilities. Although I've never come across a situation where I couldn't just use the TTY, I'm sure having a byte worth of input and output (the switches and the LEDs) which you can program would be useful in some obscure situation.

Yup, you can still use the foot switch to trigger perf captures and stuff. And those switches are totally important - GOTTA SET EM ALL, DIP SWITCH 4 LYFE

Yeah that's rough. Sometimes I feel like unions would solve a lot of problems especially in that situation but the people who work at Epic generally like it and probably wouldn't go for that while guys at EA or a startup get poo poo on.

I suppose more actions and leaks like EA wife would do the trick to solve the growing pains that games goes through. VFX has the same problem in that companies lowball each other to the point of self destruction and take it out on their already overworked artists.

ugh, i don't think unions would solve anything. Especially if they're nationwide, pay problems at EA could handicap or sink studios in completely different states if developers were forced to strike. In addition I trust my ability to garner competitive wages a lot better than any collective bargaining agreement which would have to include the idiots as well as the extremely talented.

Regardless it wouldn't necessarily even change anything at Epic since NC is a right-to-work state.

edit: also with the big publishers never doubt the possibility of pulling a Walmart - rumors of unionizing can get entire stores instantly closed, their entire staff laid off.

In the case of a company threatening to close down if unionized then maybe it should? Odds are if there's threats of unionization then the company is already loving up in terms of worker compensation and treatment. Take more pride in yourself. Using an example like a horrible company like Walmart isn't helping unless you work at EA. Though I've heard it's gotten better.

I still don't understand the hatred of unions aside from propaganda. It's very prevalent in games development I noticed. Probably due to the egocentric nature of our craft and 'doing it for the love of it'. Trusting only yourself in terms of negotiation because of 'idiots' isn't a healthy way to view your craft or your peers. There's the Animation Guild. Are they idiots? Did you look at what's happening to the VFX industry? Or prior to Lucas and Disney joining up, Pixar and ILM charged with collusion?
http://vfxsoldier.wordpress.com/2010/12/22/ilm-pixar-collusion-court-documents/

Games is in a great place as there's loads of great companies to work for. I don't plan on joining a union since I'm doing great but I won't factor it out if it ever came to it. Certain big companies don't seem to have my best interest so why should I have theirs?

Like check this bullshit out:
http://vfxsoldier.wordpress.com/2012/11/05/lucasfilm-employee-terminated-after-tending-to-pregnant-wife/#more-3017

quote:

Lucasfilm Employee Terminated After Tending To Pregnant Wife

On the heels of the recent huge news about Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm, I was recently contacted by Luis Pages. He is a senior VFX professional and VES member who has worked at many top level VFX companies around the world. He sent me his story about being recently terminated by Lucasfilm Singapore shortly after tending to his pregnant wife who suffered from a medical condition.
...

A few weeks after arriving in Singapore Mr. Pages’ wife became pregnant. After a number of doctor visits it was revealed Mrs. Pages had EDS, a medical condition which made the pregnancy very risky for his wife and unborn child. It would require that they be closely monitored by various specialists.

However, the bad news didn’t stop there. It was also revealed that Lucasfilm’s “Full Medical Coverage Insurance” did not cover pregnancy related expenses. According to Luis, the head of human resources said he was supposed to be told this major detail during his induction week — not during negotiations or before he started work.

Luis tried to find supplemental insurance coverage but due to the fact his wife was already pregnant with a high risk condition the other insurance companies refused coverage. The head of human resources at Lucasfilm Singapore suggested that he send his wife to her hometown in Russia where she would be able to get health coverage while he stayed and finish the film they were working on. She then advised him to take a few weeks off after the project was over to visit his newborn baby.

Over the course of the next few months Luis and his wife went through major anxiety trying to deal with the situation. He contacted other colleagues at the Singapore office and learned of similar medical insurance stories that revealed even some cases ending in bankruptcy. Mr. Pages had already spent several thousand dollars and could expect to pay much more given the number of specialists needed and the special risks involved during delivery.

The alternative was also very costly personally. Sending his wife away to Russia would mean not being able to care for her and miss his child’s birth. If he quit his job early he would face huge costs. Lucasfilm Singapore would withhold 6 weeks of pay to recoup relocation allowances and pay for high government taxes that kick in for short term employment.

After much deliberation, Luis decided to take the Head of HR’s advice about a month and a half ago. He purchased roundtrip tickets and requested 2 weeks off so he could take his wife to her home in Russia which Lucasfilm approved. This is where the final surprise came.

While in Russia, Luis noticed that his monthly check from Lucasfilm never showed up in his account. He contacted Lucasfilm HR and they informed him that his employment was abruptly terminated. When asked for a reason Lucasfilm management responded that because his employment was within the 6-month probation period they could terminate his employment without reason.

On top of all this, Lucasfilm is withholding his last 6 weeks of payment. He was left with nothing and his landlord in Singapore will claim his 2 month deposit. For Luis the total amount of money he has lost so far is $41,000 USD ($50,000 SGD).

This is not the first time Lucasfilm has been in trouble regarding pregnancies. In 2010 the company lost a wrongful termination lawsuit by a pregnant woman. In a separate case Lucasfilm was found to be in collusion with Pixar Animation.

I have no issue with the free association and organization of people for common cause. I have issues when those organizations become so bloated and corrupt as to cause labor monopolies and prevent people from freely working without said associations. To say nothing of mandatory union dues used to support political candidates and causes to which I [or any other] disagree but to which labor bosses are snugly in the pocket of (or vice versa)

I believe strongly in the right to work without having to join said associations. Likewise if that's your bag then cool, go ahead and waste your money on dues. Unions dislike that though because as soon as sizeable portions of the workforce can't be strong armed into joining then their collective bargaining ability either is weakened or disappears.

While I would never blame the financial woes of companies solely on unions there exists the reality that uninsured liabilities from labor deals have strongly contributed to the failure of many and will likely continue to do so until sanity reasserts itself.

When people were dying daily on assembly lines there was a patent need for unionization, this isn't as much of a thing in western society these days.

In regards to crappy Lucasarts pregnancy coverage: that sucks, Activision has great coverage. Why should workers at one be required to strike due to problems at the other and potentially lose their jobs? Unions are not always the right choice, problems like the above happen regardless.

Edit: ill say something else in regards to this - unions are largely a thing of the past, that's why most of the labor associations have either existed for a long time or exist in fields dominated by unions (SAG, auto, construction, etc).

The problems in game dev. and vfx have more to do with culture and the infancy of the field than anything else. These are exacerbated by other problems we've discussed before like ballooning costs and mismanagement at studio and corporate levels.
