The list was only published on the 3rd - San Diego had two stores listed as selling, but I just saw an ad from Bottlecraft showing their bricks and advertising them.

There was nothing official about that list. The person who put it together was basically culling data from facebook/twitter and the various beer forums. It was no coincidence that the places who first talked about having it were on that list, but the places who didn't make a peep, digitally-speaking, were not.

I was in and out at Best drat Beer Shop with a pair of boxes in about 5 minutes this morning. Two people were walking out with a case in hand as I entered, and there were a few guys behind me in line who had reserved two. Most people reserved only one box, but there were a few '2's on the list Sid was looking for my name on and a few '3's as well.

Yeah I caved and got one from Bottlecraft. They said they would go on sale at noon but all of them are already gone because they had 15 and there were already 15 in line.

Odd how some places around the country had these massive lines whereas others were just 'waltz on in and grab it.' Didn't seem to fall along the lines of hot/cold beer towns either.

Also I totally lied to myself about Westy being the last beer I'll purchase this year. 50/50 Eclipse Elijah Craig 12-year on Friday. My wallet, that poor bastard.

Yeah, there wasn't nearly that kind of fanfare where I went. I showed up at 11:30 and there were 2 guys in line and eventually when the line got to 15, they just opened the store early and sold them off so more people wouldn't get in line and not be able to get the beer.

Bine and Vine apparently still has a big line out front.

To be honest, I'm glad I did it. I would have really regretted it if I had just blown it off and gently caress it, I can make another $90, but I can't buy Westvleteren XII.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to camp out overnight to get some in Northeast OH.

The store I'm going to is waiting until tomorrow to sell their allotment, because today they were doing a Stone Vertical release. Apparently some people didn't know, and there were people who drove over an hour to line up today.

When I called yesterday to ask about their release, the girl who answered told me that there had literally been hundreds of calls asking about it. So yeah... hopefully I don't have to wait overnight, but I'm going up there around midnight, and if people are already lined up, I'm going to jump in line as well.

Westy 12 update in Arizona. Total Wine still has a ton of the stuff. I should have taken orders for you goons who aren't getting it. No lines, no hoopla, at least not as of an hour ago. Waltzed in and bought it and there was plenty left.

Such a weird event to me, as far as which states and retailers got to sell it and the allocations.

In fun work news, I'm now the manager of the craft bar I work in and I was told by the owner that we're going to have a Stone Vertical Epic private event with 03-12 coming soon. I didn't get a chance to try them before 2008 so I'm stoked. AZ goons feel free to PM me for details.

02 must have been incredibly scarce because I'm seeing a ton of Verticals that go 03-12 and the only one that I've seen that has 02 is literally the one at Stone.

Heh, Geoi said he wasn't even going to sell them until 4pm today, so if there's a line now, for TEN boxes, that's kinda funny.

And that's a great summary of why I threw down money on this. It actually goes to a good cause (I have a soft spot in my heart for traditionalists at their craft, beer or otherwise), even if Shelton scoops a lot of that off the top, and I don't have any trips to Belgium scheduled any time in the near or distant future.

For the quality, the cause, the trouble I'd need to go through otherwise to obtain my own bottles, it doesn't seem that astronomical.

On Facebook he said he had 36 bricks. Bottlecraft had 15, BDBS had 10 from what you said and I have no clue what Holiday Wine Cellar had.

Edit: Yup, he just posted on FB to say he sold out despite his "not selling til 4" plan. My original plan was to just go there, but if I hadn't seen that Bottlecraft post I wouldn't have gotten any at all since I wasn't going to wait in line for four hours.

Geoi (B&V) told me yesterday afternoon that he had 10 6-packs, down from his expected amount of 15. Apparently I don't frequent his store enough to get told the truth!

BDBS had plenty, certainly more than 10. Sid's list was a few pages long of handwritten names & numbers with each person's requested quantity, and he never sent out an email saying he was maxed out on people requesting boxes, so I assume the list didn't clear the inventory on hand. He was going to open it up to walk-ins only once a week had passed and everyone who'd emailed ahead to reserve it could pick it up. After a week, the reserved boxes would be available to the public along with the rest which presumably weren't reserved by the date he cut off the ability to do so.

e: Wow yeah, if I somehow got screwed over by BDBS my fall back was to arrive at B&V around 3:30. Then there's my second fall back at my super secret store which nobody would think to check at whose beer buyer said he's expecting a few cases either today or tomorrow :ninja:

That's some pretty solid rationale.. I had convinced myself to skip it, and now I'm kicking myself. I may go scavenger hunting after work, but I've got a feeling most of the shops around San Diego that had it are probably already sold out.

At least I've got a few bottles of Abyss waiting for me, that oughta help.

According to WestCoaster, the only four places selling it were Bottlecraft, Holiday Wine, BDBS and Bine and Vine. Holiday Wine posted several times on FB and elsewhere that they were going to have it for sale at 10 am, etc. as though you would be able to wait in line and buy it then, but in reality they were all spoken for three weeks ago by pre-order. Remind me not to go there.

As for the beer itself, I'm not even sure how I'm gonna handle this. Vertical of Trappist Belgian Dark Strong Ales? 1 to 1 comparison with St. Bernardus Abt. 12? Comparison with non-Trappist/American versions like Allagash, etc.?

In non-Westy 12 hype news, I picked up a second bottle of Abyss to cellar while I drink the first.

Well then it won't be a secret, silly. But for realsies, I know he doesn't order a whole lot of any one thing so between what he might want for himself and what I'll possibly get (and this goes for things beyond W12) I need to ensure I have one brick to share with friends while I stow the other two away. If by chance I walk in there today and can buy one, I'll make sure to spread the word.

From what I understand, pretty much none of the Trappist monks drink the stuff they sell. There's generally another small beer (3-4%) they make and don't sell that the brothers drink. Or maybe that's only some of them, but I know I've read that somewhere before.

Yes, those are called "Patersbier." Patersbier is not an actual style, however, its just a designation for whatever they make for themselves, which probably varies among the Trappist abbeys. Technically, Westvleteren XII isn't a "quadrupel" either; "Quadrupel" is a brand name from De Koningshoeven's Dark Strong Ale. There's really only Dubbel and Tripel (which in reality just mean styles two and three and have nothing to do with each other, despite persistent misinformation that they're double-fermented or whatever) as actual styles.

I'm looking at Facebook feeds and wow, people are starting to get mega pissed off about the fact the beer sold out and they didn't get it. I'm not really sure what the retailers were supposed to do. It isn't really their fault they did not get enough for everyone.

My buddy recommended doing a vertical with some of the other big (and easily obtainable) Quads, so for me that'd be Pannepøt, St. Bernardus 12, Rochefort 10 and Urthel Samaranth. But, buy them all now so they'd all be aged approximately the same amount of time as whenever I work my way through the Westvleterens.

I think he just wants to swoop in on my booze.

E: Haha, I love the hate across the internet how people who don't have "real jobs" were able to buy them all up. Nobody who's unemployed (and of sound mind and body) is spending $90 on a sixer of beer unless they're looking to flip it to pay the rent.

This is fun to do and you should do it.

Do bear in mind that they are high ABV, big flavor beers, though so trying to fit too many beers in one night can wind up with you not really tasting a good number of them. We did two a day for a week, and it was great because the previous beers were recent enough to compare but you weren't too drunk / tastebuds over loaded to really appreciate what you have now.

Yeah, my first thought was to do tasters of each of them with enough people to make it such that we weren't getting too drunk on the contents nor wasting the opened beer. I also trust myself to compare across a few days as you did and immerse myself in each one a little more carefully. I haven't tried to do any comparisons or blind tests before, might have to whip that up at some point.
