My next experiment will be this winter, where I will live in my outside 20x20 workshop with no electricity. I will not use any firewood or fire, and will just use a roll of painters plastic that I will line the building with for some small amount of insulation. That and a lot of blankets and warm clothing. I'm imagining a scenario where a Super Volcano erupts and puts us into a nuclear winter.

Well, I'm off the diet and sorry I didn't update sooner but real life got busy. I cheated on the 20th a Friday because my wife really wanted to go eat Crawfish at the casino and at first I was gonna hold out but then they said it was only gonna be there for 2 more weeks and I knew I couldn't go this Friday so I caved in. I made myself really sick because I got there and saw they also had fried oysters on the buffet and I ate about a dozen before eating 2 trays of crawfish. I normally eat 3-4 trays of crawfish but by the end of the second tray I started feeling nauseous and had to excuse myself but I almost didn't make it to the bathroom. I think the spice in the crawfish along with the fried batter on the oysters was not a good mix considering I had eaten only noodles and broth for a while. We normally gamble afterwards about $100 bucks each and I tried to get my wife to go ahead an gamble but she felt bad for me and insisted on driving me home. We had to stop twice more on the side of the road(casino is 90 miles away) and I actually felt better when I got to the house but that's because I pretty much threw everything up by then. I had lost only 7 pounds on the ramen diet and I did feel a bit weaker but I was still able to perform all the chores around my house and my normal daily activities. I was starting to feel depressed over eating the same food over and over again and I think that depression would compound in a rough shtf situation for some people. I mean even though I was eating the same food over and over, I still had TV, air conditioning, internet, etc. In a shtf situation you might have none of that, in fact you might have no running water, no electric, and extreme heat or cold weather. My blood pressure was normal at the end, my blood sugar was fine but a bit low. I don't know the impact on my cholesterol and other vitals but doubt it was affected very much in the short term. I was asked if my ankles had any swelling and the answer is no, I think that the person was curious because increased sodium sometimes leads to swelling in some people. I was also getting irritable according to my wife and I think she was right that my temper was getting worse and I attribute that to the fact that I was tired of eating the same thing over and over. Couple that with my slight depressed mood and it made me very snappy when someone said something I didn't like. In a group survival situation if the group is eating the same type of food over and over I can see certain people start fighting among themselves and bad arguments splitting the group possible. Some people will be stronger willed than others but in any group you will have different levels of willpower and it only takes one depressed/irritated naysayer to start causing problems and splitting a group. I am sick of eating noodles for a while but I think Ramen has a definite place in my survival supplies if eaten occasionally for the following reasons: 1. It is very cheap at 5 cents a pack in bulk or 8-10 cents a pack at the grocery store. 2. It is very filling and makes you feel like you just ate a big meal 3. Certain flavors have a very positive affect on your mood like for me Chicken flavor makes me feel comforted because it was what my mom always made when I was sick as a child. 4. Ramen has a long shelf life even beyond it's printed expiration date. I have seen 7 year old packs at a hunting cabin and it cooked up just fine and no one got sick after eating it. 5. You can easily mix in veggies or wild game with the noodles to make a delicious meal and if your worried about sodium just use a small amount of the powder/bullion packet for flavor or throw it away altogether. I was using only half of the included pack and the flavor was still strong so you could use a little less and still get great flavor. It was not a fun experiment to be honest although it started out that way. You can easily live off nothing but ramen noodles, but rice and beans are also very cheap so no reason not to stock away several 5 gallon buckets of them in addition to your ramen if your on a budget. My Sams club has 25lb bags of rice for $10.50 and beans are cheap too. I'll live off a mixture of beans, rice, mre's, and ramen, lol I'll stick it out for 14 days and see how bad it is and of course I will post about it. I will exit the building to go to the bathroom and even then it will be in a makeshift port a potty in the woods at the back of my property. I will also leave the building and walk through the woods for a couple hours each day to simulate hunting, gathering, and exercise to warm me up. I could easily take firewood because where I live the trees are abundant and would also be in a survival situation but I want to try going without heat first and will only use a small amount of fire to heat or cook my food and then extinguish it as soon as it is done.
