ramen survivalist posted:

My friend and I argue about ramen noodles all the time and he considers them total poison and I think they are o.k. to live off of if you had nothing else. We argue good and bad points so much that I finally decided to do an experiment.

I went down to my local Sams Club and bought 40 cases of ramen. They had it for 69 cents per 6 pack with 4x 6packs per case. So I paid a little over 10 cents a pack and I know it's cheaper elsewhere but I didn't want to waste time shopping around. I have actually seen it in bulk for 2 cents a pack but that was buying hundreds of cases.

Next, I paid a visit to my Doctor who is also the pastor of my church and I brought a pack of Ramen with me and asked him to look over the nutritional values and tell me what would happen if I ate only that for a year. He said the first thing that comes to his mind is a lack of vitamins and that I'd come down with things like Scurvy if I ate nothing else.

He said I might could make do if I took a multivitamin that contained enough vitamins. He proceeded to say that the sodium content would be way too high if I ate the 4 packs a day I'd need to get a minimum calorie intake.
However, he said if I am determined to experiment then I should take my multivitamin by cutting it in half and taking one half in the morning and one half in the evening. He said you actually pee out vitamins rather quickly so by the afternoon it would all be out of my system unless I do the half and half thing.

In order to cut down on the sodium I'll eat 4 packs of ramen per day but only use 2 of the flavoring/bullion packets. This will still give me 152% of my daily intake of sodium but according to my Doctor the extra 52% would not be a problem as long as I exercise for 20 minutes a day. If I had eaten all 4 of the flavor packs I would have been at 304% of my daily intake of sodium and that would have caused problems after only 30 days on the experiment.

4 packs a day gives me 1520 Calories, 152% of my daily sodium, 105 Carbs, 8 fiber, 28g fat(44% of my daily recommended), 0 cholesterol, and 20 grams of protein.

I decided to take 2 multivitamins a day instead of cutting one in half to make sure my body gets the necessary vitamins it will need. I'll take one in the morning and one in the evening.

I'll try to stay with the experiment for 3 months unless my health gets bad. Yesterday was the first day and it wasn't too bad. I thought the chicken flavor would be weak by only using half a seasoning pack but it actually tasted pretty good. Well I'm off to heat me another pack right now and I'll try to post an update in a week.

The project will end on May 10th 2013.The project will produce a documentary about the virtual life of well known and hero Sean Smith. The documentary will include interviews with players, game developers, virtual friends. The documentary will also show how virtual reality and reality is merging every day. We plan to interview players and game developers that knew him. We will be in Iceland April 25th, 2013 for EVE FANFEST. Going to FANFEST will allow us the opportunity to interview a lot of players and game developers in one place. This Kickstarter funding will help us get the film completed. But there is still a lot to do, so the more we can raise the better! We believe, with your support, this film will reach an even bigger audience. The audience for this film is worldwide.

My next experiment will be this winter, where I will live in my outside 20x20 workshop with no electricity. I will not use any firewood or fire, and will just use a roll of painters plastic that I will line the building with for some small amount of insulation. That and a lot of blankets and warm clothing. I'm imagining a scenario where a Super Volcano erupts and puts us into a nuclear winter.

Grimey Drawer

Well, I'm off the diet and sorry I didn't update sooner but real life got busy. I cheated on the 20th a Friday because my wife really wanted to go eat Crawfish at the casino and at first I was gonna hold out but then they said it was only gonna be there for 2 more weeks and I knew I couldn't go this Friday so I caved in.

I made myself really sick because I got there and saw they also had fried oysters on the buffet and I ate about a dozen before eating 2 trays of crawfish. I normally eat 3-4 trays of crawfish but by the end of the second tray I started feeling nauseous and had to excuse myself but I almost didn't make it to the bathroom. I think the spice in the crawfish along with the fried batter on the oysters was not a good mix considering I had eaten only noodles and broth for a while.

We normally gamble afterwards about $100 bucks each and I tried to get my wife to go ahead an gamble but she felt bad for me and insisted on driving me home. We had to stop twice more on the side of the road(casino is 90 miles away) and I actually felt better when I got to the house but that's because I pretty much threw everything up by then.

I had lost only 7 pounds on the ramen diet and I did feel a bit weaker but I was still able to perform all the chores around my house and my normal daily activities. I was starting to feel depressed over eating the same food over and over again and I think that depression would compound in a rough shtf situation for some people.

I mean even though I was eating the same food over and over, I still had TV, air conditioning, internet, etc. In a shtf situation you might have none of that, in fact you might have no running water, no electric, and extreme heat or cold weather.
My blood pressure was normal at the end, my blood sugar was fine but a bit low. I don't know the impact on my cholesterol and other vitals but doubt it was affected very much in the short term.
I was asked if my ankles had any swelling and the answer is no, I think that the person was curious because increased sodium sometimes leads to swelling in some people.

I was also getting irritable according to my wife and I think she was right that my temper was getting worse and I attribute that to the fact that I was tired of eating the same thing over and over. Couple that with my slight depressed mood and it made me very snappy when someone said something I didn't like.
In a group survival situation if the group is eating the same type of food over and over I can see certain people start fighting among themselves and bad arguments splitting the group possible. Some people will be stronger willed than others but in any group you will have different levels of willpower and it only takes one depressed/irritated naysayer to start causing problems and splitting a group.

I am sick of eating noodles for a while but I think Ramen has a definite place in my survival supplies if eaten occasionally for the following reasons:

1. It is very cheap at 5 cents a pack in bulk or 8-10 cents a pack at the grocery store.
2. It is very filling and makes you feel like you just ate a big meal
3. Certain flavors have a very positive affect on your mood like for me Chicken flavor makes me feel comforted because it was what my mom always made when I was sick as a child.
4. Ramen has a long shelf life even beyond it's printed expiration date. I have seen 7 year old packs at a hunting cabin and it cooked up just fine and no one got sick after eating it.
5. You can easily mix in veggies or wild game with the noodles to make a delicious meal and if your worried about sodium just use a small amount of the powder/bullion packet for flavor or throw it away altogether. I was using only half of the included pack and the flavor was still strong so you could use a little less and still get great flavor.

It was not a fun experiment to be honest although it started out that way. You can easily live off nothing but ramen noodles, but rice and beans are also very cheap so no reason not to stock away several 5 gallon buckets of them in addition to your ramen if your on a budget. My Sams club has 25lb bags of rice for $10.50 and beans are cheap too.

I'll live off a mixture of beans, rice, mre's, and ramen, lol
I'll stick it out for 14 days and see how bad it is and of course I will post about it.
I will exit the building to go to the bathroom and even then it will be in a makeshift port a potty in the woods at the back of my property. I will also leave the building and walk through the woods for a couple hours each day to simulate hunting, gathering, and exercise to warm me up. I could easily take firewood because where I live the trees are abundant and would also be in a survival situation but I want to try going without heat first and will only use a small amount of fire to heat or cook my food and then extinguish it as soon as it is done.
