So, rather than, you know, walking 50 yards, you'd rather go through the whole process of starting the bike, getting it warmed up, riding over, and parking again? That's the kind of decision that only makes sense drunk, I guess.

Um to be fair I've relocated my bike from my usual parking spot when uptown (next to the coffee shop I frequent, the owner lets me park in the employee parking space) which while convenient and free is off the main streets and therefor more secluded for thieves, to just a block and a half away to a spot in front of the bar I'm at. I didn't wear any gear then either, but then again, I don't ride my bike when I'm planning to drink because I'm not an idiot. And getting it warmed up? Some of us have bikes with fuel injection son.

I've got fuel injection too, but I still contend that in the time it takes me to start the bike, putt 50 yards to the next parking lot down and park it properly, I could have just walked those 50 yards. I guess moving it because it's somewhere it shouldn't be is OK, but I don't even want to touch my bike while drunk, not even to push it. I'm too poo poo-scared that I'll drop the drat thing.

Fuel injection is sooooo much easier to maintain and tune, exponentially so. And it's worth it if only for never ever having to clean or sync another carb, ever.

I think it took a little longer than that on some of the big engines (too lazy too google) but yeah at some point they said they just couldn't meet emissions with carbs any more.

I know reddit is awful but I can't help myself from trying to crack thru some of the idiocy that is posted there. The new riders don't deserve the awful advice that some of them like to give. I think this thread fits in here well tho: http://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/151p4s/didnt_listen_and_i_learned_the_hard_way/ tl:dr version: A guy buys a 2012 R6 off a buddy as his first bike for cheap and puts himself over the bars of it when practicing. He describes himself as "terrified of it" and asks if he should swap it for a 250, and most of the people in the thread tell him to keep the R6. edit: The OP replied to me tho and seems like they'd go for a smaller bike so there's that at least nsaP fucked around with this message at 23:33 on Dec 18, 2012 |

Conversation with a friend while checking out the Yamaha section at the moto show this weekend- "[Wife] wants to get an R1, so I want to check it out. She really likes them." "I had no idea she was into bikes. That's cool. You going to get a 250 or something like it to start her out on?" "No, she just wants an R1." "But that bike's way too much for her to start on." "She doesn't care about engine size. She just likes how it looks." It really boggled my mind, because this is the same guy who refused to let me ride his 250 before I took my MSF course. Maybe he's (sub)consciously hoping she'll crash.

Look, it's not that difficult. I just remove all my gunky old winter air, pour filtered (HEPA - very important. You don't want to cheap out on a tire air filter) air into my decanter, let it breathe for a few minutes, then slowly (important!) fill the tire at a low psi with fresh air. Just takes 30 minutes every few months and it could save a life. C'mon, if you didn't want to do your own wrenching then you shouldn't have a bike.
