Went to the beer store. I really can't wait for the day where I graduate and can actually afford to buy whatever the gently caress I want. Today was my last final and my fridge was empty so I wanted to unwind. I hit the same roadblock I always hit. Do I buy poo poo that I know I love or risk buying poo poo that I may hate? There were a handful of singles, four, and six packs of stuff I have yet to drink but pretty pricey. But god drat, Belmont Party Supply in Dayton, Ohio is a glorious place. I ended up with two that I love: Sixer of Bell's Two Hearted Four pack of Founders Breakfast Stout Picked up five singles (never had): Lagunita's Maximus Lagunita's Daytime Lagunita's A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale Founder's Red's Rye P.A. Stone Ruination IPA A random customer tried to talk me into picking up a four pack of New Holland Dragon's Milk Oak Barrel Ale but I couldn't talk myself into adding a $17 4-pack to the mix. Had a Breakfast Stout because I've been craving it, but just finished up the Red Rye and very very happy I picked it up. e: Also ran into the next door Homebrew/Beer Supply store and picked up a couple tulip glasses. I might be fairly new to the craft beer scene (Well, I've been VERY casual for five years, but just recently dove in) and not really understand why the hell the tulip is so great but god drat if it doesn't make the beer look good. I've heard great things about both of them, just haven't pulled the trigger on buying them yet.

It isn't widely available in any way, but my wife purchased a gift for me this evening. Coast Brewing released a barrel-aged Blackbeerd Imperial Stout (Blanton's) a few weeks ago, and she grabbed a bomber for me in celebration of my medic school graduation. I think their distribution is localized to SC and maybe NC/GA. Let me say, I have downed a few 4oz pours at various watering holes locally, but with time to sit back and really soak it, I have to say I am blown away. So smooth without the hot notes you'd get in most barrel aged IS's. I know it's obscure, but if you get a chance, pick one up.

Thank your lucky stars that Dayton actually gets Lagunitas. The entire Cincinnati market doesn't get any Lagunitas at all. When I asked the beer guy at Jungle Jim's he told me the founder has some sort of problem with Cincinnati and so they withhold shipping to the market even though they ship to pretty much every other market in Ohio.

Great Divide Fresh Hop: Both fresh and hoppy, and avoids the witch hazel flavor I sometimes get from IIPAs. Anchor Christmas: Fruitcake steeped in cough syrup. I wouldn't pour this on my enemy's waffles. Why can't every Christmas beer be Celebration?

Captain Shortbus posted:drat. Now I want a keg of root beer. Just a heads up to anyone and everyone, soda drinks require a whole lot more pressure than beer, in the keg, to stay in suspension, which is obviously no problem for the keg, but it also means that you need high pressure serving lines, which you definitely don't have accidentally. They're the ones with the white reenforcing crosshatches all over them. Without those your hose will fly off your connection and empty your keg of sugar water with great force all over the place.

This is my first time trying Great Lakes Christmas Ale and I really enjoy it. The spice is just barely at the forefront and it has a nice, crisp, dry finish. It's actually fun to drink, and is therefore the polar opposite of the last spiced beer I had, which was Southern Tier's 2XMAS. If you've ever tried any Southern Tier beer and thought "Hey, this is a sugary, unbalanced, mess, and there's really no way any sane person could finish a bomber of this, much less 12 ounces of it" and then if you've imagined what that would be like if somebody dumped in enough nutmeg to make you actually trip out and hallucinate that a carnivorous Jesus Smurf is devouring a candy-coated Gargamel corpse, then congratulations, now you no longer need to try 2XMAS.

Ok, about to go have dinner at my local pub, this is what they have on tap that I haven't had: Dock Street - Man Full O’ Trouble Porter Philadephia Brewing Co. - Harvest From The Hood Du Claw - Bare rear end Blonde Clown Shoes - Eagle Claw Fist Amber Flying Fish - EPA Starr Hill - Double Platinum (DIPA) Mission - Shipwrecked DIPA Looks heavy on the IPA selection, although they also have Breakfast Stout (and a few others) on tap. I have had that fairly frequently though, as it seems to be really popular around me. Any of these worth trying?

I picked up a six pack of Du Claw Mysterium tonight, couldn't find anything else interesting at the store. I'll be honest, I hadn't heard of them before (despite being one state away) but it's not too bad. Can't say I'd buy it again, it's not my style of Belgian.

DuClaw makes a few good beers and a bunch of mediocre ones- Bare rear end and Mysterium fall into the latter category. Black Jack (not the barrel-aged version), Soul Jacker, and Retribution are the only beers of theirs i'd buy again. my girlfriend liked the DIPA (Serum?) well enough, too.

Ha, didn't matter anyway as they ended up having a Victory tap takeover last night and had completely switched up their beer selection. Unfortunately I had also had a number of the ones they had on tap, so I ended up trying 21st Amendment's Fireside Chat, and Brown Shugga. Both beers were kinda "meh". Fireside chat just seemed like a confused mess, banana, spices, kinda a bubblegum aroma, some chocolate and bitterness. Brown Shugga was just WAY too big for my tastes. The hop aroma was amazing, but it ended up way too sweet, I could barely make it through half of the glass, luckily my fiance was there to help me so we didn't waste it. I guess I should have expected a beer called "brown shugga" to be a bit on the cloying side. I'm definitely suffering from a case of big beer fatigue. My current favorites are lighter brews like Yard's Brawler and Ed Fitz from Great Lakes. I'd love to see more session beers.

Had a birthday bottle share thing tonight. Ended up being kind of insane: - Cognac Barrel Dark Lord De Muerte (DL w/ancho chiles)... Good but too hot. Literally: overpowering with peppers. - Hunahpu '11. Milder than the '12 I had a few months ago, but still one of the best beers I've ever had. Much better than the Dark Lord at much less trade value. - Cantillon Gueuze - Great! But I think Drie Foneinen's version may be better and especially so for the price. - Mikeller's Sour Bitch - Very good, but lacked a true Belgian funk to it. - Jester King's Funk Metal - Got better as it warmed. Still prefer Madrugada Obscura as a sour stout but definitely worth tracking down. - '10 Darkness - The first thing we opened. Came off a little too soy sauce-ey. I got the bottle 2nd hand so I wonder if it wasn't stored right or if this simply doesn't age great. - BA Plead The 5th - A great BA'd stout and unique compared to those that simply try to rip off BCBS. Absolutely a great beer and worth going out and finding more of. - Abrasive. Still the best IIPA on the planet. Had 2 cans and everyone- regardless of preferences- loved it. - Bell's Batch 6000 - Very astringent in smell after this many years. Tasted fine, but not mind blowing. - 50/50 Eclipse 12 year Elijah Craig - I don't get what justifies the price of this. Good but not nearly on the level of other BA'd stouts. I can get two and a half 4 packs of Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout for the price of this bomber and get a better beer. - Bell's Quninannon Falls Special Lager - Really good, apparently very small bottle run (4 of 378). - Sam Adams Longshot Mile High Barley Wine - We couldn't figure out whether this was one or two years old. Either way, tasted ridiculously drinkable. Like Brown Shugga without the hop-front. Not perfect but surprisingly good. - Alaskan Baltic Porter - Very good. The best thing I've ever had from the brewery. Very complex. - A growler of Institutionalized from Revolution - They don't growler this. I don't know how my friend pulled it off. We ended up getting nearly through it. Great barley wine. GREAT. Very excited to try Straight Jacket, the BA'd version of this that came out today. - Jai Alai. Busted open one can for a friend who showed up late. Drank one before people started coming over. Seriously fantastic. - Sam Adams Triple Bock. Do not laugh: This was the surprise of the night. Brought over as a joke, it tasted like fresh '12 Dark Lord. Not only was I surprised to be able to drink it, I think across the crowd, people actually enjoyed it. I'm sitting on a bottle and now actually think I won't open it with my nose pinched. I'm a little disappointed it wasn't laughably bad... - More than a few home brews, including crazyfish's quad based on rage-saq's recipe, which was a great beer. More carbonated than the style usually is, meaning it came off less sweet than I'm used to. Another friend brought his own lambic, which wasn't as tart as he probably wanted but had a lot of funk to it for a home brew. Overall, a bottle share list that is the best I've ever had. Good night. Just wish we could get all the bottles in a shot that showed off the shear amount of amazing beers we had... EDIT: Those first few beers seem to imply that they were disappointing. Not the case. All were great but not quite ideal. Find any of them and you'll be happy. danbanana fucked around with this message at 06:44 on Dec 16, 2012 |

I'm drinking a Samuel Smith's Organic Chocolate Stout and it really does taste just like Midorka said - malted milk balls. At $4 for a 550ml bottle, this was a ridiculously good buy. I also ended up picking up: four pack of Yeti, the first I've seen in OH... despite seeing all the different variations of bombers four pack of Sierra Nevada Narwhal Imperial Stout bomber of Epic Big Bad Baptist two more bottles of stone RIS for the cellar one case of Expedition for the cellar I've never tried the Big Bad Baptist, Narwhal, or Yeti before. I've tried all the other variations of Yeti, but never the original beer. I really look forward to trying both the Narwhal, and Yeti tomorrow night, but for now... this Samuel Smith's is calling me. P.S. My cellar is pretty stellar right now, I'm happy with what it's looking like after one year in beer. I do wish I had some more 'rare' beers, but I'm pretty happy with having a ton of Imperial Stouts... they'll be better trade bait in a few years anyway!

Shane and I (and some others) split an '09 Darkness earlier this year and it was absolutely fantastic; the mouth feel was incredibly creamy and there was no soy sauce.

I ended up drinking a Yeti and Narwhal tonight, even though I considered waiting til tomorrow. The Narwhal came off as quite boozy, and I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I thought I would. It had pretty nice underlying flavors of chocolate and roasted malts, but the boozy flavor really threw me off. As expected, the Yeti was quite fantastic, and I consider it to be worth the $14 price tag. I definitely won't be buying it again anytime too soon, but I'm glad to have tried it. I think my favorite variation of all the Yetis is the espresso, I'm a real junkie for coffee stouts though. Kudosx fucked around with this message at 10:49 on Dec 16, 2012 |

I caused a minor Beer Incident at dinner today. The server at Slater's was saying "we don't have any Coffee Stouts on tap today," but then I pointed out that they had Alesmith. Dude was adamant that there's no coffee in Alesmith, so being the Beer sperg I am, I pulled out my phone and showed him the label of the bottle: "Brewed with Ryan Bros. Coffee Beans." My wife was so embarrassed she gave him a huge tip.

I tried my Firestone 16 last night. I liked it more than 15 but less than 14. It was surprisingly (and deliciously) dry, and I swore that I detected the wine barrels (it was probably actually the brandy barrels). I remembered 14 as having a far better mouthfeel which I think gave it the edge for me.

Whole Foods Park Lane - right across 75, as well as any of the WF stores in the area. Park Lane particularly has a good tap selection if you're interested in growlers. Also The Bottle Shop in Lower Greenville.

Because of travel and actual Christmas plans, we celebrated today, so in the Christmas spirit I cracked open my 2009 Port Older Viscosity. No cork pop, no head, but it's quite nice. Still very boozy, cola aftertaste, heavy on "old" bourbon though through that manages to end up extremely smooth. Then, to make it better, my wife brought me a piping hot peanut butter cookie straight from the oven, which (duh) pairs brilliantly. Good beer day.
