'Tis a screwed up world
Oh, oops. Didn't mention speeding.

Yeah. Speed limits are pretty much non-existent thanks to the highly-developed GPS systems mapping every camera AND movable camera patrol zones. :v: So that's a thing everywhere. But in Seoul, you will rarely ever get close to the speed limit except very late at night thanks to traffic. The highways in/out when not congested(like the one to ICN)? Zoom.

3 second rule is a good one to follow; I've seen that sometimes, just not AS often as you guys. That tends to happen late at night for me, when there aren't that many cars.

Like you guys said, I think it's because there's less cops available to patrol a much larger area than the super-dense Seoul Metropolitan Area.

Unless you want to go on the highway/tollway no bikes allowed. Supposedly we're supposed to stick to the far right lane too, where the busses and trucks are, pretty dangerous.

That of course doesn't excuse the scooter drivers, but they have nothing on Thailaind/PI/China.

Drama Spotlight: Tamra, the Island

Finished: Yes
Episodes: 16*
Starring: Pierre Deporte/Hwang Chan-Bin, Seo Woo, Lee Sun-Ho, Im Joo-Hwan, Lee Seung-Min, Kim Mi-Kyung
Available: Netflix, Hulu, Dramafever, ViKi

First off, let's point out the obvious. The Hangul is "TamNa," but for some reason, the English name is TamRa. What is up with that? This isn't the first time I've seen this happen either, so someone explain what this is about, please.

Second off HOLY poo poo THERE'S A WHITE PERSON WHAT THE gently caress IS GOING ON HERE WHITE PERSON WHITE PERSON WHITE PERSON :supaburn:

Now about the show. Based off a manhwa, the story takes place in the 17th century, where a young Englishman named William (THE WHITE PERSON) is infatuated with all the neat treasures coming in thanks to the developing trade relations between Europe and Asia. Dreaming of visiting faraway lands and escaping his overbearing mother (and badly acted English lines), William takes an opportunity to join his friend Yan, a Japanese sailor, on a voyage to open a new trade route to Japan.

But then their ship gets wrecked in a storm. gently caress.

Meanwhile, there's Tamra Island (now known as Jeju-do), an island where the women rule because they're the divers who collect all the poo poo in the sea that everyone needs to eat and pay taxes with. Beo-Jin is the daughter of the head diver, but Beo-Jin is kind of sucky at everything. But in a cutesy way. She's like a Reverse Little Mermaid. Or something. I don't know.

Anyway, there's also Park Kyu, a scholar who has been exiled to Tamra. Since he's so used to doing scholarly things like making GBS threads in pots and being literate, he has a hard time getting accustomed to the more rural life of Tamra, and comes off like a big snobby jackass, which he makes very clear when he crosses paths with Beo-Jin and dickheads it up right away. This is convenient, because it is ultimately decided that he will live with Beo-Jin's family, leading to more opportunities for the two of them to bitch each other out.

Oh, and William survived the shipwreck and washes up on Tamra (Tamra is not Japan). Did I mention that Tamra loving HATES outsiders and if he is discovered they're going to KILL THE gently caress OUT OF HIM? Because that's going to happen. Luckily Beo-Jin finds him and is fascinated by him, and decides to keep him a secret from everyone else so he won't be slaughtered.

So that's Tamra the Island. As the result of its source material, it tends to keep a light tone, but it does develop a bigger and more involved story (I didn't even mention that woman in the fancy clothes up there. She's a big deal) as time goes on.

*The show was originally planned to be 20 episodes long, but MBC cut it down to 16 due to low ratings. Some overseas airings, and some of the places available online, let you watch all 20 episodes, which is the same story, just with more content.

Well she's not very new. First appearance I could find of her was from the 9-15-12 episode. There's two male and two female MCs now, and I'm referring to the younger one. Is it Shin Bora? I can't tell.

Smurf it up
I've been quite busy in the last couple months:

Playful Kiss
The most boring show I've ever had the misfortune of watching (ok maybe only from asian ones I've seen), with the most annoying female lead. Not even Kim Hyun-joong's looks can salvage it, and I'm not a fan of his anyway. I struggled to keep watching it in the hope it would redeem itself eventually, but it never did. Best thing on the show: teddy bear re-enactment scenes.

You're Beautiful
A lot of fun. First time seeing Jang Keun-suk, he looks like a little devil. I enjoyed Park Shin-hye quite a bit, I wish we had had at least one good scene of her playing the role of the male twin properly.
Best things on the show in no particular order: Keun-suk's pouting; his way of pronouncing the name of Shin-hye's character; Pig-Rabbit.

Heartstrings
Decent drama but could have been better. I got my wish of seeing Park Shin-hye again, though the role was still a fluffy romantic one. I really wish I could see her in a more complex or serious role.
I didn't find the love story here particularly strong or interesting. In the beginning she goes abruptly from "who's this arrogant prince?" to "oh imma follow him everywhere and think about him". The usual big twist in the love story that happens in the last episodes was kind of weak and even a bit boring.
She had little to no chemistry with Jung Yong-hwa, she had much more chemistry with the second male lead Song Chang-eui even if their relationship wasn't romantic. I don't know what's up with Jung Yong-hwa in this, he seemed a little better in You're Beautiful, or maybe the fact that he now was in the spotlight made it more obvious that he still has a lot to learn. His character wasn't too interesting, he lacked depth and was too moapy and self-absorbed in a boring way a lot of the time. He was constantly overshadowed by Song Chang-eui in everything, looks, strenght of acting, how well&interesting their characters were written.
I really enjoyed the musical setting and the secondary plots and characters.
Best things in this show: Song Chang-eui, the music (gayageum bits in particular).

Extravagant Challenge
Ok you've caught me, this is technically a Taiwanese show with joint production Taiwan & Japan. It does have a connection to Korea, more specifically Donghae and Siwon are in the main male roles.
It's based (quite faithfully) on the anime Skip Beat! (based on the manga with the same name). I had seen the anime last spring but kept delaying to watch the show, no idea why.
I loved the choice of Ivy Chen in the main role, she was adorable and fun, so intense, managed amazingly to convey the sort of energy that anime scenes can have, without being weird or out of place for a tv show.
I disliked Siwon at the start and for a short while I feared he'll make me like the show less, but he grew on me, he acted well and he was quite a great choice for the role. Donghae was fun and although his character was technically the villain, by the end of the season we could see the potential for more depth and complexity in the role. He didn't have too many scenes though, he would probably have more in a second season, which hasn't been officialy announced, and if it were to be done it would be sometime in 2014.
Simply put, I loved this show to bits. I loved the fun scenes, I loved the romantic scenes, I loved the characters and the story, I loved the soundtrack. I don't know how to convince you guys to give it a try, but if you're ever bored please check it out.
God I hope they make a season 2 sometime. Now I'm left with reading the manga if I want to know how the story continues, and it sucks so, so very much to go from anime to tv show to simple drawings, especially as I'm not even used to reading manga.

Panda and Hedgehog
Very enjoyable drama. The main female lead was slightly annoying sometimes, but quite often I was surprised with some of her dialogue lines, they seemed so natural and appropriate, usually I don't feel that way with dialogue from female leads.
Donghae acted quite well, even though his character ended up being all soft and nice inside, in the beginning it was nice to see he wasn't a perfect rich good guy. I wish they would've stuck with it and kept/shown more flaws, more of his dark side, would've been refreshing.
The story and scenes and secondary chars were fun, and the cakes looked delicious. I still haven't tried one of those bladdy macaroons, I promised myself one of these days I'll go to Starbucks and grab one (only there we have them here).
What I really liked in this show was how the best relationship was not the love story between the main female lead and the main male lead, but the bromance between the two male leads. They were adorable together. And the most moving scene was also not a romantic one, but one between a character and his grandfather.
There was also one actress that had the most funny face and way of delivering lines from all the Korean actresses I've seen so far in shows, she was the sister of the secondary male lead, Choi Won. I can see her doing great in some variety/comedy show.
Best things in this drama: bromance, cakes.

Full House (Take) 2
I've not yet seen the first Full House so I can't compare them, but this one was really fun. Awful hairstyles aside, all actors did an awesome job, the story moved at a fast pace, there were never any boring moments. No Min Woo was awesome. :3:

As a bonus to this big post I give you a video of Keun Suk (the imp) and Park Shin Hye filming a bed scene in You're Beautiful (check out 1:10 especially): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54KnYgK8FkI

It's all dirty and complicated politics thanks to the current head of MBC, Kim Jae Chul.

Right now, he doesn't like the low ratings these programs have, so he just decided to have them cut entirely. He is taking a lot of flak for it especially since it was due to his unpopular and politically motivated cancellation of news programs that led to the half-year strike MBC had, which in turn, led to the low ratings of nearly ALL MBC programs across the board. There is a lot more to this story, most of it being petty politics, but you can look up more behind it if you search for his name.

Some of the perceptions of people in the show will change between episode 1 and latter episodes for sure. One issue is that the season was extended to 8 episodes from 4 I think? Unless YouTube goes down for the rest of the year/the world really does end tomorrow, Gangnam Style is set to cross ONE BILLION views by the year's end. This video came out 5 months ago, so rounding and averaging everything out nice and neat, that's roughly 200 million views a month.

Compare that to the second most-viewed video on YouTube. "Baby" was released over 2 and a half years ago, and has 800 million views. Rounding and averaging everything out nice and neat, that's roughly Justin Bieber can loving suck it.

Song was catchy, very different in style from what they are doing now. Did they use the original audio recording or did they go back in the studio for it? Because TTS were belting it out like they have been as of late. I can see why they kind of sat on it, since it looked like they used some of the concepts from Gee and Gee turned out to be monstrous for them. Probably was in the running to be a single then, but got shelved in favor of Gee and Genie and probably never found the right time to release it.

Really interested in the teaser for their lead song, but I don't believe a single drat thing about it. SNSD teasers are usually red herrings. They all looked good in it though. :v:

The song was shelved in 2008 for legal reasons. The comeback posters featured the girls on skates and it's hard to separate where Gee starts and Dancing Queen ends. Boomerang was also considered for their comeback before finally settling on Gee. Lucky choice.

There was some english news in korea doing a segment on Crayon Pop. The reported was there when they woke up/waked them up and their managed had them go to a convenience store to buy food. So they get convenience store food and then come back and the manager goes through and takes out all the "bad" food. My thought on that is if you care about what they're eating either teach them to cook or have that poo poo stocked in their apartment. It all fits into them being thought of as only products I guess. Also its pretty easy to play "spot the idol close to passing out" on any of the shows.
