When people say Persona 4 had a good "story" they mean it has some of the best characterization, voice acting, dialogue, and the sense that the party is a group of highschool friends in any RPG.

The actual main story beats can be a bit clumsy sometimes, but if you're complaining that the cast spends too much time "having fun" then you kind of missed the point! The actual Point A > Point B story is not the greatest but the rest makes up for it. Even when it's cheesy it's endearing instead of making me want to kill myself

That's the thing, though; the fun stuff has its moments, but the majority of the time it just felt like padding to me. Padding between new mysteries, all of which are resolved in much the same way. All of which seem to only ever add minute amounts to the real story unless it's all just dumped on you 3/4ths in by Adachi. P4's plot is fine, but its execution makes the game just draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag. And any time I wasn't exploring dungeons or moving the plot forward I grew bored fast.

Of course, I had the same problem with P3. The Social Links/school schedule dynamic does not at all help pacing.

Don't like it? well...

I think you're missing the point of Persona 3 and 4.

All those little stories and the social link's are a pretty important.

It's not "padding" it's there to advance the themes of the game. They're not just a story that takes place over a year, the idea is that you spend a year in the life of the characters.

I didn't miss the point at all; the point was just not as compelling about halfway through either game. Trust me, I know P3 and 4 in and out as far as what they're trying to say. I am saying, however, that the execution just didn't work as well as intended.

Well, fancy that.
Silly Persona 4 question. Correct me if I'm wrong on my logic. I'm starting November and I'm aware that a certain S Link's last day is the 3rd. I recently hit rank 9 and gave all the right answers, but that leaves me a few points short of the invisible points needed to hit rank 10 on the 3rd.

I do however have a save a few days prior to the 3rd. Can I just go to bed, hope to have a dream involving that S Link, and reload if not? That should give me the boost needed to hit rank 10.

I don't even want to know how SMTIV would follow Strange Journey, so I heavily doubt it, I just assume it'll be some sort of silly tie in.

Best part is this makes Frost Ace's reappearance way more likely.

Awesome, frost ace is the best Jack Frost around. I wonder if they'll add, like, samurai frost or something, considering the characters are Samurais (if I remember right).

In DS2, how exactly am I supposed to build Makoto? I see that she's primarily a phys fighter, but why use her when I have Hinako? What're some good builds for her?

It'd be a little weird that they're showing it off this early(or at all, really) if it was just a silly tie-in, imo.

Makoto's sort of a jill of all trades, but DS2 tends to favor specialists. She's basically like a slightly more balanced Io, if I remember right, so whatever you'd do with Io, do with Makoto (In other words: Bench her because Fumi and Otome have the magic skills and Jungo and Hinako have the physical skills)

I love the NG+ bosses in DS2 so far. Except for Nebiros, they all seem brutally unfair at first, but with a bit of understanding, a few tricks of the combat system and a biiiit of save scumming, you can turn things around on them.

And I've done all of them so far with just four carried over demons. Don't do the Nebiros fight with just four demons. You will want to kill yourself. (Well, finally got a fifth one out of the compendium for Beelzebub

Some of them are alright, but the P3 MC is basically an enabler. Sadly, there is no way to tell Kenji he's retarded for going after his teacher or what have you.

One of the big reasons that people like the P3P FeMC path so much is that it replaces some of the links that made you feel like a terrible enabler in vanilla P3 with ones where she actually helps people like a human being.

She loses out on some cool ones, though.

I don't know if she was considered cool, but I was bummed that FeMC can't interact with Chihiro at all. Pissing off Akihiko's fangirls all the time is great, though.

I just started playing Nocturne for the first time, do you guys have any advice? (I already know not to dismiss the Pixie or anything I fuse it into)

Some specific advice I'm looking for would be how I should build by character's stats so that I don't gently caress them up (so far I've been focusing on Magic, since that just seems like a good idea in an SMT game), and any general tips on more subtle or complicated mechanics.

Are you planning on going True Demon or one of the normal endings?
If you're going TDE I'd recommend pumping phys up so you can abuse Pierce later on. As well as keep Focus and Lunge because those skills are really loving good.

General tips though are make sure you get Fog Breath ASAP (comes from the first Force magatama you get IIRC) and fuse Daisiojou when he first becomes available because you will use him in your party for literally the entire game.

Magic is good in the beginning, but Physical Demi-fiend easily becomes more powerful by the end. It's really your choice, as there are many useful powerful magic skills. Fog Breath is a good skill to have at the beginning, counting as two lowered levels of accuracy to foes.

Even if you do go magic, you're going to need 40 strength to get one of the (late-game) Magatama, so don't completely dumpstat it.

I have no idea what this means. I mean, obviously you're referring to different endings, but I don't know what the significance of True Demon is and I'm afraid to Google something related to the end of the game for fear of spoiling it.

Whichever ending I end up going for though, I'll be sure not to neglect my strength stat.

Magic is good, but usually most people go with Strength-based character. Some of the Demi-Fiend's best skills are physical (though it takes some time to get them) and this game doesn't have Mind Charge to help boost damage on magical attacks. Also, most of the magic attacks you can learn are of the random, multi-hit variety so they're not as useful for exploiting weaknesses as your demons are when it comes to multiple targets.

Though no matter which way you decide to go, you'll definitely want to learn high level debuff abilities like Fog Breath and War Cry. Debuffs, as well as buffs, are key to doing well in tough fights and having the major ones on your Demi-Fiend means you always have access to them regardless of what demons you have out or fuse.
