Welp it's Friday here in Aus, I'm drunk and it's a new page so I'm going to re-post my pre-emptive Riot.EXE® Sponsored End-of-Year Round-Up Friday Five:

cheese-cube posted:

1. Black Sun Empire Feat. Thomas Oliver & Youthstar - All Is Lost ("From The Shadows", BSELP006, Black Sun Empire)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXkOHVqo93w
Absolutely massive track from BSE's most recent album "From The Shadows". The drop on this one is catastrophic.

2. Zardonic & Messinian - Survive ("Vulgar Display Of Bass", BGRDMLP001, Big Riddim Recordings)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N6PeMtyNnM
Usually I hate any and all dubstep producers however Zardonic is an exception to the rule as he manages to toe a fine line between the two genres. His most recent album, "Vulgar Display of Bass", is exactly that and is a great listen.

3. Octane & DLR - Cometh The Horde ("Method In The Madness", DISODLP001, Dispatch Recordings)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTPsnvt3U7g
A very well put together track from an equally well produced album.

4. Logistics Feat. Nightshade & Sarah Callander - Crystal Skies ("Fear Not", NHS209DDS, Hospital Records)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbJRpft4L98
Some may find it a bit corny but I really don't give a drat. It's a beautiful track with lovely lyrics :3: (Actually you know what, the whole drat album is amazing).

5. SpectraSoul - Sometimes We Lie... ("Delay No More", SHACD006, Shogun Audio)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya8wOBZMAfI
Very nice minimal downtempo track. Smooth as all hell.

Honestly it's been a fantastic year for D&B. There's been a bit of bullshit but overall I reckon we've come out on top with some amazing releases from brilliant producers being dropped in this past year.

Here's to 2013, for whatever the hell it brings.

Looking forward to everyone else's 2012 year-in-review Friday Fives!

Edit: vvv Styliferous your picks are magnificient! IMO this thread is sorely lacking in darker D&B tracks so this is refreshing. vvv

I figure I've acquired enough dnb to do one of these for this year. So, here's my End of the Year Round-Up Friday Five.

5. Amit - Killer Driller
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwTgYMu07Uk
Amit went completely in with this one. The half step drums, smothering bassline, and minimal vocals put together one of my favorite tracks of 2012.

4. Culture Shock - Troglodyte
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cDsF9hXD5k
What can be said about this tune that hasn't already been said? Surely one of the most popular dnb tracks of the year, and for good reason. I got to hear Andy C drop this track at U Street Music Hall in DC a few months back. The bass hit so hard that all you could do is stand there and laugh about how absurdly strong it is.

3. Jubei - Say Nothin' Ft. Flowdan
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZtpskPaapk
Jubei takes the lurching half-step Dub Phixiz popularized last year with "Marka" and improves the formula. The bassline crushes on a system, and Flowdan is at his best lyrically.

2. DRS - Count to Ten ft. Enei
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUfENWgIAJE
This one is an absolute dance floor smasher. Enei put together a monster track, and DRS's lyrics complete the package. Absolutely menacing.

1. Stray, Sabre, & Halogenix - Oblique (ft. Frank Carter III)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzFJVBAA0Xo
Going in a different direction for my last track, I have to put Oblique as my top release for 2012. Not only is this my favorite liquid track of the year, but its possibly my favorite liquid track of all time. Everything in this track is perfectly formulated, from the drums, to the piano, to the lyrics. This one never fails to make me emotional. I'm convinced that in fifteen years, when people are putting together "Back to 2012" sets, they'll include this one every time. Timeless.

So, to review...this is what I posted halfway through the year...

Riot.EXE posted:

Friday Five Resurrection: Half of the Year Edition

5 new releases from the first half of 2012...GO!

- "Take you" - Technical Itch. (Been a while since I've heard somethin' like this, but I'm glad the style isn't dead.)

- "The Verdict VIP" - Heist. (Brand new hype anthem for me. Heist loving KILLED IT, here!)

- "Anarchy" - Counterstrike & Gein. (Sometimes, aggression is the only answer...and what better way to answer than with a track like this one!)

- "Middle of the Night (Reso Remix)" - Evol Intent. (Oh my motherfucking god...Reso let us all know what the gently caress was up with this remix right here! It was really great to hear him drop this live, when I saw him and Gigantor of Evol Intent, back in February!)

- "Voodoo (ill.Gates & Bassnectar Remix)" - Bassnectar. (Pretty fuckin' dope remix right here. Sounds like it came straight from a video game, or somethin'.)

So, what else was there? Welp...without further ado:

Friday Five Resurrection: END OF 2012 Edition

- "Siga" - Taku Inoue. (Holy poo poo. So, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 came to consoles in September [it was released in arcades last year, though], and with its console release, came some additional stages that weren't in the arcade version, which means additional music as well. This was one of the new tracks for the stage called, "Tropical Rainforest". poo poo got me SO HYPE when I first heard it. Definitely deserves a spot here!)

- "Light Upon My Road (Makoto Remix)" - Heavy1 feat. Iriann Joyce. (drat, y'all. This track right here is just so drat peaceful. Everything becomes right with the world when I bump this one right here. Love it.)

- "You Skream" - Original Sin. (Off of the new "Mad World EP", this is my favorite track off of it, no doubt. It just hits all the right spots for me. Good that Original Sin is still puttin' out quality tracks!)

- "Feed The Machine" - Black Sun Empire & Noisia. (Gotta love it when new tracks sound like throwbacks while still keeping it fresh somehow. I hope that never dies.)

- "Check 1,2 (Emperor Remix)" - Reso. (Now, "Check 1,2" is already a dope track, but it wasn't Drum & Bass. Thankfully, Emperor killed it with this remix on the single. By the way...Reso's Debut Album, "Tangram" is loving amazing, and y'all should give it a listen if you haven't already. Anyways...just lovin' how hype this remix right here makes me.)

...and there you have it!

I'm just gonna put it out there that my favourite track of last year isn't even from last year. I played a few sets last year and this one has had consistently managed to ramp up the crowd massively: Warrior Bass - Future World (utopia) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RbZTkh2oF8

That said, there have been some epic tracks from this year I love dearly that have also gotten a good response too. :yayclod:

I've got a gig which I'm pretty sure is carte blanche where I'm considering doing a bunch of real oldschool jungle sets including the above and say Hyper on Experience - Disturbance https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96KGE5xvXvM, Remarc & Lewi Cifer - Ricky https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9Z9Alr5NWc and a couple other tracks; I'd take a massive listing of that era to hunt down though as I don't have much (gig is potentially in a couple months, which is enough to get somewhere although I'd like to go serato for logistics sake)

Basically I'm in oldschool mode and so are a lot of people around me :v:

Secondly, last week Neosignal (Phace & Misanthrop's label) posted a 2013 Outlook detailing their plans for this new year.

Of note in the outlook is that Phace & Misanthrop will soon be releasing an album which "will consist of electronic music we do not really know how to call yet" (Thijs De Vlieger from Noisia called the album "neo digital krautrock"). I have to say I'm skeptical about the direction their taking however I'll refrain from passing judgement until I've heard it. From the sounds of it the style will only be remotely similar to D&B.

As for definite D&B work Phace & Misanthrop will be releasing a new EP under Neosignal which will include a collab with Mefjus and Noisia! This is awesome news as Phace has done some amazing collab work with Noisia in the past (Such as the tracks Thrillseekers, Unveil, and, more recently, Program).

Continuing in this vein of discussion does anyone know of any upcoming D&B releases to look forward to?

What/who do you guys recommend for really hard DnB, like, just the right side of breakcore? I'm a big fan of Barcode's Filthcasts, which consist of stuff like:

I also really like this Cooh mix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvnZeLuDqlA, anything with metal samples/mashups is a plus for me.

I started with things like the Metalheadz Platinum Breakz series and the Moving Shadow 'point' series of mix CDs (as featured on GTA3), but I'm always looking for harder stuff; Are there any 'must have' mixes or CDs for this kind of thing? Hardcore and drumstep influences are always good.

I agree with this opinion, although Vaporize was one of my favorite tracks he's ever produce. It will never overtake Juno, though. I used to be obsessed with Subfocus and picked up pretty much every release in the mid 2000's. Verano (w/ Brookes Brothers!) is still an underplayed gem.
