A fun bit on Fox News which I'm wrongfully exposed to nightly.

Throughout Brett Baier's show, he played up the scare tactic of "Will Obama go for a 3rd Term?" "Who wants to make it so this inaguration isn't Obama's last?" "The Democrats are seeking to allow Obama to run for a 3rd Term."

In a come back from commercial in literally less than 2 minutes after a night full of drumming up Obama's massive conspiracy to be El Presidente for Life:

I'd think various weapons manufacturing companies are eventually going to start yelling at the NRA about just who the gently caress is representing them in public. Historical gun buffs, avid hunters, ex cops with side arms, olympic shooters, there's a lot of people they want out there representing them. But once you go down the road of Hitler, 9/11 truth, birtherism, and the rest you get to the point your brand will get hurt.

We'd already be past Sandy Hook in the media if it weren't for people repeatedly saying crazy things on national TV.

I think he was referencing that governments killed 292 million people over the course of the 20th century (and some study of a Hawaiian university that supposedly proves this)and using that as a starting point to say that guns aren't dangerous at all unless the government has them.

He just couldn't get it out right due to trying to fit a minimum of three conspiracy theories into each sentence.

So let's count:

-Murder suicide pills
-9/11 was an inside job
-UK a tyrannical police state
-New World Order coiling it tentacles around the US
-Shark attacks are hyped to keep americans afraid (actually borders on a real thing here given the way US media runs on fear, but it's hilarious that he doesn't see himself doing the same)
-Establishment is gearing to take everyone's guns away to make way for a tidy, efficient massacre
-Prozac is even better at making people kil lthemselves than those old Judas Priest albums!
- UK is currently on fire with old ladies having their brains bashed out in the streets daily, Walking Dead style.
-Chimpanzees dancing on the head of a pin is someow central to this point.
-The media pretty much elevates mass shooters tot the status of rock stars, encouraging more people to pick that career path.

Did I miss any?

SilentD

Like any good conspiracy though not all of these are crazy, some of them are grounded in reality. Some of these are things to be concerned about when they don't come from Alex Jones. Let's start.

quote:

-Murder suicide pills
Leaving aside insane right wing/left wing/scientology/anti vax and other nonsense we do have a problem with anti psychotics. People have been known to kill others or themselves. You'll notice a lot of anti depressant advertising on TV that openly states suicide is a side effect.

quote:

-UK a tyrannical police state
I don't think anybody would argue that the UK or the US haven't crossed part of the line into police states. The loss of civil liberties and privacy in both of our countries isn't something to be proud of.

quote:

-Shark attacks are hyped to keep americans afraid (actually borders on a real thing here given the way US media runs on fear, but it's hilarious that he doesn't see himself doing the same)
This is actually a true thing but not worth giving a poo poo over. Shark attacks get spectacular treatment in the news and are always turned into a circus. But that's true of everything in the media. You admit this is a thing so let's move on.

quote:

-Prozac is even better at making people kil lthemselves than those old Judas Priest albums!
This is 100% true. Prozac does carry in increased risk of suicide, even comes with a warning about it. Judas Priest does not.

quote:

-The media pretty much elevates mass shooters tot the status of rock stars, encouraging more people to pick that career path.
This is true as well.

Leave Alex Jones out of this for a moment. The UK is certainly less open than it has been in history and has cameras all over the place, some civil liberties have been lost, same can be said for the US. This is troubling and worth caring about. Psychiatric medication can certain cause people to kill themselves and act violently, sadly many people who do not need it end up on and many people who do need it can't get it. Our national media sucks and turns everything from shark attacks, to plane crashes, inept terrorists who set their balls on fire, into the next greatest freak out we all need to be scared about. Mass shooters do get their 15 mins of fame in our media and become instant rock stars while their victims are often lost in all this. Ten years from now we'll still be talking about Lanza, not his victims.

Alex Jones is crazy as hell and his rant was laughable, but let's not dismiss valid issues just because Jones happens to think 9/11 was an inside job and floridation is evil.

What is the alternative, though? Conceal any crime in which more than one person dies? Send spree killings down the memory hole? "What are you talking about, Timmy? Those ten desks in your classroom have always been empty and our teacher has always been Mrs. Doppelganger!"

Terror attacks and ghastly violent acts get exceptional coverage because they -are- exceptional. Will that fascinate the broken and desperate to an unhealthy degree? Yes, but so will a whole lot of things.

Saturated media coverage makes spree killers infamous, which is one of the reasons they do it.

Lead on it as a sombre story, don't name the killer, don't make it a media circus, don't interview children at the scene. Obviously in the local area it will be a huge and catastrophic event, but the less international it becomes the less somebody is tempted to outgun the Aurora shooter so they get more coverage.

I have no real idea what the motive or intended "statement" was of the last three major shooters. I do know that at least two and perhaps all three suffer from some brand of major illness. I don't think they had agendas or were "idiots." I think they were sick. And when it comes to something as traumatic and violent as a mass shooting the media's hands are largely tied. They talk about it because it's what viewers want. It gets more people tuned to their channel because it's what people want to see or understand. Not vice versa.

Fat Guy Sexting posted:

They do it because they're ill. Not because they're normal people who think they've found their "in" on fame.

I can flatly deny the idea that media coverage motivates the average viewer to take up a gun and mass murder because they want fame or a platform to speak.
