LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MY DOG
Did I tell you I like Terry Moore? Yeah. It's good.

I just love his artwork to bits, the characters and anatomy, the backgrounds, the occasionally nutty detail work, really everything.

e: look at those last two panels, a lot of artists would have recycled the same drawing and just tweaked the head but nope, he redrew the whole thing!

Yes, but you'll never get it.
I follow some tumblrs that post female comic book characters. The one that updates the most often posts some of the more unfortunate art.

I kind of like this, though. Baz Pringle.

It really is great - I just wish a good collection of it would come out again. The new paperback (and presumably the hardcover as well) has really washed out colours.

Glamourpuss is a study in how to draw women properly (as well as many other fantastic art techniques). He may hate them, but I'll be damned if he can't draw them.

Up until this thread, I hadn't heard of Alex Maleev or Scarlet (I don't read many comics other than my old Dark Horse X-Wing comics, which have some pretty awesome art in them, if you ask me.) But these pictures are phenomenal! I particularly love the one in the middle. I think I have a new favorite artist. Thanks, Alhazred!

Go pick up the Bendis/Maleev run of Daredevil immediately. It's my favorite run of anything ever and I never gave gently caress one about Daredevil. They also collaborated on Spider-Woman which is collected in one trade. Beautiful stuff.

I really liked the Astonish X-Men one on Netflix I saw. I thought it was better than decent.
EDIT: It also has good voice acting, so there's nothing to "read" if you're being literal.

Before we engage we should hang back and study their tactics.
I fear that a lot of Bendis' lower-profile projects (Scarlet, Brilliant, Powers) are going to end up like Stray Bullets and never be finished. :smith:

Edit: Fixed it, 100 Bullets was indeed finished

I thinnk that Powers will go as long as he is friends with Michael Avon Oeming. The same thing with his work with Maleev. That he will make time to do them so he has a reason to work with his buddies.

I'm super surprised that no one has mentioned Jerome Opena, most recently the artist on Uncanny X-Force 1-20 (or so). I literally gawk at every panel this guy does. Anatomy, movement, action, orientation...I've never seen him make a mistake, and would read any comic he's drawing. This guy made the 2010 run of the loving Punisher interesting.

I think it mainly has to do with the state of the comic industry when he got started. His art looked drat good compared to a lot of the comics being put out at that time. I think he upped the bar quite a bit in the early 90's, his style was pretty well proportioned, had strong, muscular men and women with boobs and a good sense of composition, negative areas, etc. His artwork was very consistent too which was a pretty big thing, I recall that a lot of the comic books I read had art that was all over the place.

Unfortunately I don't feel like he has really grown as an artist in the decades since then. He raised the bar and plenty of artists have since surpassed it. The only thing I have seen from him that I can recall impressing me was visually Deathblow #1 way back when Image was first starting. Inking has changed, coloring has really, really changed, styles and tastes have changed and I don't feel like Jim Lee has adapted with them, when I look at Batman or Superman I feel like he's still drawing the same things he drew in the 90's except his lines are maybe a little cleaner and use less hatching for shading.

Paul Pope has a thing coming out today and that's always cause for celebration, even if it's just a colored (by the colorist from All Star Superman) version of something he did for dark horse presents and some previously unpublished earlier work.

Pope is probably in my top 10 of all time artists. Everything he does is just impossibly cool.

Captain Marvel #9.

Having now read the full issue, I have to say that this works better taken as a whole. Yeah, the faces are a little wonky, but it only gets bad when it's an action scene when *everything* starts to take on exaggerated, dynamic forms. Out of context, I didn't like these panels. As part of a full book, I really enjoyed it.

If there was a 'bad comicbook storyline' thread, it would make the grade as well. It started off as a mediocre Garth Ennis series, then he left on the 6th issue essentially wrapping the story up, and Al Ewing took over and it's gone further and further off the rails and into completely irredeemable territory ever since.
