Does anyone have any thoughts on Rogue Ninja? I really love the graphics and it also seems to be pretty much what I'm looking for, but I never saw it come up in any iOS roguelike discussion I could find.

Rogue Ninja had really bad pacing issues and never got interesting. It's slightly Shiren like, though? Like imagine Shiren the Wanderer, except awful, with no towns or anything.

On a similar note, Dungelot was really disappointing. What it comes down to is it being far too luck based. Imagine Desktop Dungeons, but you can't use strategy to sometimes avoid damage, instead you constantly lose bits of health. And you can't use strategy to heal yourself, instead you have to hope you run into rare events that heal you for more than 6 HP.

The mostly unavoidable damage gets even worse as you go further in the dungeon. At first you're constantly getting hit by enemies because there's not enough ways to avoid damage to go around, but you can at least attempt to reduce your damage. Even if you overwhelm an enemy stat-wise, they are still likely to get an attack in. Then the game introduces stuff like trap tiles and ranged enemies that have a chance to do unavoidable across-the-map damage for every turn, from the start of a level until they die. Trap tiles do almost as much damage as the infrequent healing items heal you for, and there's no way to avoid them unless you have the rare Lantern item. You can blow resources to kill ranged enemies from afar, but they become so common that you'll run out fast.

I think the worst part is the trap tiles. It's the final little push into being asinine. Too bad, because the game has a really cool concept.

Whoa, this game has some amazing art and animation. Goddamn.

Yeah, I'm playing a mage, up to level 11. It's pretty neat, the real-life location thing is largely irrelevant. The only thing you can't find anywhere is the special towers that are the 4th tier of difficulty. I can't even get halfway through a tier 3 dungeon, so that kind of thing is a long way off. The only problem with the game is that while there isn't a paywall content-wise, you can only ever get like, 3 new spells with coins, and maybe one mid-cost spell with the free IAP currency you get. I'd throw a dollar or two at the game but the cheapest IAP crystal thing is 5 bucks.

Still, you can certainly get by without that. Plus, if you're lucky, you'll party with some random guy who's dumped :10bux: into the game and has all the cool spells. Also while the game seems a little crash-prone, it's nice enough to restore your progress right down to the current turn of a battle, so it's very forgivable.

That's too bad. I really like how it looks, but I guess there's a reason why I couldn't find much discussion about it.

Anyway, I'd like to thank Inevitable Ross a bunch for The Dungeon. I came across it when I was looking for iOS roguelikes and although it wasn't quite what I was looking for (which I am now convinced is just a copy of Shiren), I thought it looked pretty cool. I definitely look forward to playing it!

Ditto on the thanks; I am liking the tongue-in-cheek writing so far. My first game ended after about 8 turns when I was ganged up on by four monsters at the initial start of the dungeon. So if nothing else the un-forgivingness of the RNG has been demonstrated.

Is having a US credit/debit card an inescapable barrier to getting a US store account? I'd quite like to play Puzzle & Dragon, which is unfortunately not on the UK store, and trying to set up a US account gives me this barrier.

Obviously, apologies in advance if this is not the territory of this thread or what-have-you.

I've ridden the blockheads train as far as it will go. I dug down to the lava, but it didn't spew upwards. Then, when filled the shaft with water, it just bubbled and did damage when I sat in it. How am I supposed to use the pressure to make a steam engine to pull my trains!? Worst game ever.

Ok, Life is Magic won't get past the tutorial on either my phone or ipad. I thought it was a signal issue, but I got home and have the same problem on wifi on both devices as well. After the tutorial dungeon when you get your first quest I click the banner and it sits at the loading screen for 15+ minutes no matter what. Any solutions?

I had this problem too but quitting the app and starting it back up fixed it for me.

Nope. You can create an account without entering credit card data and as long as you only download free apps you'll never be asked for payment information. I forget the exact method for setting one up that way, though.

Here's an Apple support page on creating an iTunes account without a credit card.

The short version seems to be that you navigate to the store page for whichever country you want to make an account for, download a free app, create a new account, and then select "None" as the payment type.

Someone mentioned slot machines a while ago which got me to thinking. There's plenty of boring slot machine simulators but are there any fruit machine simulators? As in the proper ones, with the feature boards. I love playing those but they're just too bloody expensive at the pub these days so an iPhone (or hell, PC) fruit machine game would be amazing.

I dunno, but I've been playing a game called Coin Dozer that scratches the hell out of that same kind of itch. You get 40 coins to play a virtual coin pusher, there's prizes and upgrades (don't sell your prizes holy bajebus getting sets of stuff gets you crazy bonuses), a shake button, weirdo special coins, and the only downsides are the regen rates are a bit poo poo and it's kind of ad-heavy. Free though, totally worth a try.

edit: Oh yeah, and leveling. It's silly.

Yeah I played this for a while but then my save reset and gently caress that forever :smith: Coin pushers are my other great arcade love along with fruit machines though, so you were highly relevant!

That's a lot more buttons than the old-school ones would have but really it's mostly Cancel, Holds, Collect (cash out), and Spin. Over the years they added stuff like Bonus and Change Stake making them unnecessarily confusing but they're pretty simple really! Do you not have these in the US?

Slots - Pharoah's Way is the absolute best. I've tried every single one that has active developers and it clearly wins. I've never had to buy IAPs and you get on plenty of hot streaks. It's optimized for the 5 and game center and doesn't have any stupid janky graphics or slowdown. The theme might get tiring since it's only Egypt themed but you unlock enough different games to stay involved. It's fast, clean, and fair. Really all you could want in a mobile slots game.

The four I'm missing are for 100% completing 5, 10, 20, and ALL levels in ONE run. Without dying or retrying.

Yeah ok so I'm done with the game. That was fun.

Given the acronym matching with the series "Active Time Battle" system, the composition matching a typical FF battle, and the recycling of the Collossus/Intangir sprite from FF6, this is probably a best-of-FF-combat sort of thing.

This isn't really true. Slot machines as you know them in the US are incredibly dull. For all the iOS slots games that just have you staring at the reels until you match fruit, I'd have thought that one with much deeper gameplay elements would be popular too :shobon:

From what I heard it's because of political reasons. The guy in charge of remakes right now worked on FF4, so he feels comfortable doing the remakes up until that point.

Edit: I don't know why they can't just transfer a ROM over though.

I downloaded Life is Magic, and I'm assuming the fact that I live in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere in Japan is kind of hindering my enjoyment of this game. There is very literally nothing on my "street view" map except my banner and like 3 treasure chests. During the tutorial, I had to scroll for a solid minute to get to the first dungeon.

Am I basically screwed and can't play this game, or am I missing something obvious?
