Barton and Hamann, of course, played together in the Manchester City midfield for a season. They parted ways in the summer of 2007, since which time one has become a washed-up, semi-retired has-been whose considerable footballing talent is now a fading memory and who lives his life vicariously through Twitter in an attempt to recapture the renown he once enjoyed, and the other has remained Dietmar Hamann.

Pretty unfair on Joey there, he won the Championship with Newcastle along with his 1 England cap.

Hamann, Corluka, Elano, Richard Dunne, Micah Richards, Stephen Ireland's best years ever: in the pre-sheikh era, that was a pretty loving solid City team.

Sorry yeah, was really talking about Johnson's first season and a bit, which was before Hamann, Corluka, Elano and before Ireland was any good, that season under Sven was the first good one for a long time.

As a neutral that was a really fun City team to watch. Can't say the same about the current City team IMO.

well he clearly has no interest in playing again. those few years of weekly payments have him sorted out for life unless he's the gambling type

I love that within about a fortnight of no longer being contracted he's already taken on mythical "here's a rare sighting of him" status. he's like football's very own Syd Barrett - fat, self-indulgent and retrospectively overrated by middle managers trying to prove they're in touch with the 'soul' of their hobby

From all accounts, he slagged off all of his rehab work and just spent all of his time drinking and going to casinos.

I'm sure some lower league club might be willing to sign him given the talent he has shown in the past, but there's no way he's going to be either in the Championship or the top flight given his fitness issues and lack of match time barring a miraculous turnaround.
