I think I might go pick this game up tomorrow, looks neat. Are there any particular recommendations for character classes or suchlike? Though when the choices given are Fighter, Mage and Literally Aragorn I don't suppose there's much point asking.

How's the character creation?

I really like the character creation. You can make some pretty unique avatars.

I would just pick whatever class you want to start playing with. You can hire Pawns to fill out your weaknesses, and you can change your class in game without much trouble once you get to a certain point towards the beginning.

The character creator has a fair amount of options. How you physically build your character can affect your stats (i.e. big people are tougher, small people regain stamina faster), but I don't know to much about it so I'll let someone else handle that.

Quite varied, lots of great options. Sadly, I'd say a majority of the equipment choices, hairstyles and general body types look better on the male characters. The female equivalents look rather lame if you aren't willing to put some time in.

Nah, if you follow only the storyline you won't see half the world.

A lot of those horrible loving escort quests are the only reason you'd go to some of the furthest corners.

All of the classes are fun in their own way. If you do a fair number of sidequests or explore some you'll get enough XP and discipline to max 2 classes or dabble in a bunch, and unlocking new classes is nearly free, so don't worry much about not liking what you start as.

That's cool, because the quests don't really interest me. I just want to run around the gameworld and see things on my own. That's how I played Skyrim too, except there were places that were locked unless you had the proper quest.

There's a couple of places that you won't be able to go without quests, but they are basically only there for the quests. Top of Bluemoon tower, tainted mountain, duke's manse, and the hidden part of witchwood.

I can think of maybe 2 places in the normal game that require quests to access, and they're smaller set pieces you don't have much impetus to return to outside of the quest. The whole world is actually open to you if you are a crafty fighter or an adept flee-er.

Don't be too excited, because the game world is a hundred square miles of grassy-hilled gently caress-all for the most part and only becomes interesting/dynamic when you take the related quests (because they make things happen). Exploration isn't really its watchword.

Class balance in Dragon's Dogma is poor. Are you asking for advice on which vocations are best, or are the most fun? "The Best" is an easy answer because your character's growth is dependent on their vocation; "The Best" vocation is the one with the highest strength/magic growth. For fun, I find the Assassin easily comes out on top, with access to shields, bows and the two fastest melee weapons. I recommend not playing a Mage or Sorcerer; they're horribly dull vocations best suited to NPCs.

If the playing style of a Strider interests you, (basic mechanics spoiler, I guess?) start as a Fighter for the noticeably higher strength, then switch to Assassin as soon as it becomes available at level 10. The Assassin is a Strider, but better in every respect.

Basically I want to be able to do whatever the guy is doing in this video, so I guess assassin is the way. Seems to be the class that most evokes Shadow of the Colossus. Only faster.

If you mean climbing all over the Cyclops, technically any character can do that. The strider/assassin is probably the best at it though since they get stamina boosts, and climbing on things slowly drains it. Your attack rate also slows down considerably, but striders are pretty quick with their attacks so I don't think it's as much of an issue to them.

Additionally, the Strider class has the fastest speed when climbing on things. Plus, they have Hundred Kisses and Assassins have that stabby sword move that does insane damage when climbing.

It's been a while but I think striders climb monsters way faster. The very first thing that you should do is get the sinew augment from the fighter class so you can carry more rocks and skulls.

What I did when I played was main Fighter until I got all of the perks and skills I wanted, then switched over to Assassin. A lot of the Fighter sword skills also carry over to the Assassin class, so you'll be able to pull off some powerful attacks with that. Being able to switch between Sword+Shield and Sword+Bow while also having the "stab things hard when you climb them skill" makes the Assassin a very versatile class. I had my personal pawn start as a Mage and eventually switch to Sorcerer, with the two remaining pawns being a Mage for healing and the last spot filled with whatever I felt like at the moment (usually a Ranger).

Maybe in Dark Arisen, Warriors can use 6 skills at once like every other class in the game? That would be nice :smith:

I've played a few classes, and I definitely think that assassin, strider, and ranger are the most fun to play. Fighter is OK. Warrior and Mage were not fun. They were way too slow. I didn't try the mystic knight, but I imagine his utility with different weapons could be cool if you like doing magic (which I didn't).

I hope dark arisen opens the game up more. I really wish I could change Btwn sword board and sword bow without going into a menu. The game would be 100% more enjoyable that way.

Do we know about what Dark Arisen is going to actually bring to the table as far as gameplay/quality of life improvements? I couldn't get more than five hours into the game, partly from decision paralysis over my class but MOSTLY because travel was a total loving bore after the first couple cross country treks. Something to improve that over the current limited fast travel system (or a revelation on how I totally failed to abuse it correctly :v:) would be great.

Well, a loaded goon could give your pawn some port crystals as severance pay. That's what I did for my sorc character and it made that newgame play through very nice.

Added my info to the PS3 doc. I took a couple weeks off from games for the new year, but now I'm back and working on this one. My pawn Jazzy is actually a decent little tank now thanks to titties/Mr_Dread hooking her up. I think I have her up to Level 21 or so. Any must have abilities for a Fighter pawn? I just bought Stone Skin and Sinew and the second version of the skyward slice (I forget the name). I've been abusing murder-chan and Caroline's help, so now I'm switching it up to some lower level goon pawns. Right now I've got Urist and Merlin (okay, not totally low level) and I'm running around finishing up Notice Board quests. I just wish I had better items to give pawns when I dismiss them.

I'll also be cycling through pawns to get that "use 70 pawns" trophy soon, so if your pawns come back with nothing I apologize in advance. I'll give them something good later, I swear!

Well I started up the game with a fighter, got a mage pawn and hired a couple of dudes from the void thingy, including a massive burly guy with a really unfitting voice. Killed a snake thing, and now I have a few sidequests to do while I'm in the area. Incidentally is it okay to equip stuff to guest pawns? They won't keep the stuff I give them when they leave, will they?

They will keep stuff that you equip them with and you will be unable to take it back as the items become gifts to the pawn's owner. The game will warn you about this should you try to equip a rented pawn with anything. You can use that mechanic to trade weapons and armor with other players, although items that can only be used by hybrid vocations like magick archer and mystic knight cannot be equipped by pawns (as they cannot have those vocations) and thus cannot be traded.

Don't give away the Gold Idol (there's other, less useful idols you can find). Or if you absolutely must, make a forgery of it first (the forgery has the same price lowering effects). Don't give away the forgery, you won't be able to buy the new items if you do.

Directly outside of Cassardis, there are two rabbits under a tree to your right up the hill. There are 2-3 to your immediate right on the side of the road. There are 3-4 to your left up the hill under a tree. There are 2-3 further down the path on the right.

There's also a nook in the Witchwood where 9 of them spawn near a chest. They also show up in the Witchwood generally.

Aaaaand... there are some across the bridge from Gran Soren to your left, chillin with the warthogs.

You keep skills that both classes have, but lose ones that were specific to the old class. (You don't need to rebuy them if you switch back to the old class though.)

You do not have to rebuy skills that are shared between Fighter and Assassin, however anything that is specific to Fighter (like Soul Skewer) cannot be used as an Assassin. However should you decide to go back to Fighter, everything you unlocked will still be there. Augments that you unlock may be used on any vocation though.
