Box Score Hardcore Title: The Myth and the Legend : I feel depressed all the time. And if the Pessimists win the loving Hardcore Title from the Coburns, I expect that trend to continue. And since the Pessimists are going to win Game 1, that seems like a real possibility. : The Coburns have a couple of nagging injuries in their rotation, meaning they'll need two spot starters in three games. : That's not good, but at least the Coburns will hold onto the Hardcore Title for one more game with a win. : But can they hold on for Game 3? : No, they gently caress it up, and the Pessimists will take the Hardcore Title for the second time. : Sorry, Smasher. : That's fine, because I know that the Bangers aren't going to let them keep it. This will be a series on which all four titles are on the line. : That's right. If either team sweeps, they will hold the Intercontinental, European, United States and Hardcore titles simultaneously. If the Bangers win, but don't sweep, they will win the Hardcore Title. If the Pessimists win, but don't sweep, no titles will change hands. : And the Pessimists win Game 1. If they win all four titles, I'm ending the Super-League. I hate every thing and person from the Bay Area. : Fortunately, the Bangers have my back, and win Game 2. : That means it is impossible for the Pessimists to win anything in the next game. : But they can still lose! Bangers win 5-4, and they will take home their 3rd Hardcore Championship. : Does that make you happy. : No. I thought it would, but it doesn't. And that makes me sad. : Next time, assuming depression doesn't completely get the better of me, will be Bangers-Unspecifieds and then either Bangers-Spooners or Unspecifieds-Bloggers. Let me run this by you guys and potentially gals: If established owners, knowing that they're going down in the Gauntlet, were to trade good players to upcoming EC owners, then there possibly could be a shift in the power balance that would make subsequent EC/SLs more competitive for more teams. I mean, right now, there are a couple of teams that basically own the entire league and everyone else is just fighting to avoid low Gauntlet placement. This will just allow the cycle to continue, as Marauder and ForeverBWFC and toiletofsadness will just make their teams stronger with each draft and trade they make. The point I'm trying to make is that you don't get to keep your stars if you die in the Gauntlet. If you trade them to a team, you at least have the chance to reacquire them in the future if you want. So. Pick an owner who has a promising looking team. Trade them a player or two to improve their chances of changing the power balance in the Super League. Thank you for hearing me out. -cbx

The status quo is that the Super League brutally winnows each expansion class down to the two or so teams capable of being realistic competitors. Just this year, the Barons, Tornadoes, Gumshoes, and arguably Mashers and Bloggers are teams in a position to make the playoffs or at least survive to next year. The Cultists won their division in their first year. The very best teams undergo Macho Man-based attrition. Your plan might change which teams succeed, but it won't change this calculus. It seems frustrating to new teams because most of them are in the 80-90% that will die, but there's no avoiding that inevitable outcome. Honestly, I'm sympathetic to some of these issues, but the system we have now seems like the best compromise. And really, at this point you're just complaining about Marauder. The Losers have only been around for 3 seasons - is that too long to be interesting? If so, should we just kill every team after its second year? No, it seems to me that these complaints always come back to Marauder's teams, and the truth there is that he's been lucky that the Finger-Bangers haven't won the league since Macho-Manning became a thing and that Smasher has still failed to put a good DH team in the Phoenixes' division. In conclusion, we should appreciate what we have, and not try to come up with crazy plans to stack expansion teams in order to "challenge" a largely imaginary "status quo." In several seasons, when the Rakers or Catastrophes or some other expansion team are 16 games ahead of their division, someone will complain about how the old teams are just too good and the cycle will begin anew.

It's just that the idea reminded me of how we get several complaints about "old teams dominating" (including from me in the past!) and I wanted to write a bit on why I disagree with that now. This is something I've been thinking about too. The Arguments were never going to be winners, due to the lovely way I built them. But the drafts did add a few good Super League quality players (Clemens, Hartnett, maybe Nen) to the two superstars already present (Mantle and Williams). Add those five to an EC team, or a potential contender already in the SL, and maybe they'd have a chance at really challenging in the SL. As it stands, we'll be eliminated in the first round of the Gauntlet, and they'll get dispersed all over the place, giving a smaller benefit to more teams. Smasher is correct. It's not fair to everyone. But it's the Super-League. Fair doesn't come into it.

Okay, first of all, updated spreadsheet. I didn't update it for last week's changes, so I'm not positive of the exact new stuff. The rotation is certainly changed, as I'm moving to a 4-man system for a bit. I've changed several sliders relating to subs and pitcher use. I think my lineups and bullpen are unchanged (besides Hendrix as another LR). Second of all, trade offer: does anyone have a righty 1B or 2B who they'd like to move? I've got 1968 Norm Cash, who's taken a little ratings damage for me, but if you're in the EC or Smasher League he'll re-roll. Plus he's been decent for me in what amount he's played, even though he's mostly going against the wrong platoon side. I also have some spare CFs and back-end starters. I'm also looking for top-notch SPs or OFs, but who isn't? Also, as always, I'm willing to trade bench players or marginal pitchers for lottery tickets on EC teams' feeders. Finally, I really don't think that collusion is the best way to help keep new players interested in the SuperLeague. And I'll go ahead and say that I didn't see anyone throwing their support behind tatanka giving me that sweetheart trade, so I'm not so sure that anyone else does either. Smasher's absolutely right that it turns the SL into a popularity contest, and I don't see how it would end up in any other direction than hurt feelings and ultimately everything going to poo poo. Actually, I think the big problem with balance in the league is not that we need to make more teams ultra good, it's that we need ways to keep ultra-good teams from arising. They really throw things out of whack because they not only are built to win a lot of games, but also completely dominate the trade market for marquee players. I personally barely ever bother to make significant trade offers in-thread, because I simply don't have the trade pieces to face any kind of competition from the elite teams. Anyway, this is not to say that things are broken and must change, but that if we do need a change I think it would be much better to try to put some limits on the best teams instead of just adding a few super-elites. Anyway, some ideas that I think are better than "owners facing relegation give away players": 1) Revisiting some of those roster ideas from last season (e.g. a Rule V draft, a DFA system, etc.) to thin out AAA squads. 2) A "franchise player" system: Each owner can designate one Franchise Player per season. This player cannot be traded, but if the owner gets relegated they can bring the player along to their next team. Special players (EC rewards, Yoshida, Rainwater, Oh, maybe Negro Leaguers) could be automatically franchised (or could be the only franchise players allowed). This could help keep relegated owners interested in returning, plus I feel like it plays to the lore of the league. (And yes, I thought of this largely because the idea of Old Hoss playing for another owner makes me distraught.) 3) Players age. Alternately, every player "retires" after appearing on a SL roster for some number of seasons. 4) Some kind of salary cap system (maybe using WhatIfSports player salaries?). In conclusion: Al McBean

Jobbers need the following to be respectable come Super League time: Everybody. Of course, the players I do get in trades will become jobbers. It is their destiny. Speaking of jobbers: Johan Santana, you are pitching like Red Tyler, when the #4 spot is reserved for guys like Riki Ataki. Jim Kaat gets called up to take Santana's #4 spot in the rotation. Santana gets sent down. Santana looks like he had a great roll and yet has an ERA of almost 6, and doesn't seem unlucky. If it was a lack of luck I'd just see if his luck would turn around in June. Also, lineup wise, all that really needs to be done is make sure Frank Howard never sees the field. Keep him as DH and keep Gary Sheffield in right!

So the standard Late Policy at my college, which I will be using here is this: Bruzer has until Midnight, Super League Time, the day the chapter is due to get a 10% penalty. If he misses this, it's 20% until Midnight the day after, at which point it's 30%, then 40%, then I will not accept it. Resubmissions have 24 Hours from when the fourth person says "no" before it follows on that scale. What this means is that Bruzer, at this time, needs to submit B-quality Work in order to get a D. If he submits after Midnight Super League Time, then A-quality work is required for a D. If he submits after Midnight tomorrow Super League Time, A+-quality Work will be required. This all said, this is just my personal grading rubric. Bruzer is free to say "gently caress you" to my vote and get four others to say yes.

Mornacale has some interesting ideas, but they would require a ton of work to implement, and I'm not sure I'm up for that. My feelings on the matter is that the longevity of the elite teams are their reward for building good teams and making good trades. And, even then, the league is already random enough so that it's really hard to build a team like that. Consider the Burma Imperialists. They won their division two seasons in a row. This year, they have the worst record in their division and second-worst in their league. I'm willing to listen to suggestions on how to fix competitive balance issues, but I don't think that letting owners play kingmaker is a good idea. Dynamo League Week 18 Injury Report Antarctica Unspecifieds Rick Aguilera (RP) (Unspecified) - Out for Season Fukuoka Finger-Bangers Earl Battey (C) (Stripped for Spare Parts) - 30 days Rockford Losers Steve Bedrosian (RP) (Bedrockford Bedrosian would be a good nickname....once his shoulder heals) - 12 days Now, let's get to a new page.

And that's with adding Smoky Joe Wood and Dihigo (and Burgess) in the draft. I don't know, the Tornados are a first-year team all of one game behind the Bangers. Three other Dynamo League expansion teams have winning records. If the Bangers weren't around, the Unicorns would have been well ahead in their division, and they're not renowned for rapacious acquisition. I think the real trick is to grab the '56 Dodger or '71 Met pitching staffs if they are available. But not the early 90s Braves, for some reason.

The Besides, what would you do if an own Franchised a player, and then didn't re-apply after getting relegated? I mean, the timing, as far as I can tell, runs like that: >Start of Super-League Season > Mid-Season (Superdraft, EC Registration), > End of standard Super League and EC Seasons > SL Playoffs/EC Playoffs/Gauntlet > Dispersal Draft > goto 10. Let's say a player gets relegated in the current seasons, Super-League VIII, and that all Gauntlet players Franchised a player on their team. Only the best 2-4 teams out of the Gauntlet run live to survive another day in the Super-League, and there's 20 teams Gauntlet-bound (4 in round 1, 2 in rounds 2-9). Now, their entire team gets relegated except this Franchise Player, so there are theoretically 16-18 Super-League caliber players in limbo, that can't get resolved until halfway through the next season, at best, because you have to see if a player is going to come back with a new team and cash in his Franchise Player. Let's assume, for a ballpark, half the people who got relegated created a new team and cashed in their Franchise Players, which means there are still 6-8 left. These 6-8 have to wait until the following to be recycled back into the Super-League.
Essentially, trapping Key Players in limbo for an entire season just because someone who had them got relegated and wants to call dibs on them is a Bad Idea. Monathin fucked around with this message at 23:15 on Jan 19, 2013 |
