I find with pet photography you just gotta get out there and follow them around. There's no real trick other than maybe edging towards a higher shutter speed and a short focus, but it's really all over the place. I want to try setting up a decent backdrop and taking some more snake pictures that way. It's really dark inside and too cold to try natural lighting outside for reptiles.
