And this was a guy with abs who was showing his face. So like how much is "a bunch"? I got a letter this morning advertising a balance transfer to my 12.5k visa ($0 balance) for 2.9%, so I'm using 5k, putting it on the 2.5k MasterCard (apparently that's a normal thing to do), and then transferring that to the 9.5% line of credit ($7500 balance), and then again for the last 2500 of the balance. This will save us $46 a month in interest. The 2.9% rate is up in 6 months at which point the debt will probably be gone, but we can just put it back on the line of credit if we have to. They couldn't do the balance transfer onto the line of credit directly, before anyone asks. Does this mean that I should pay down the student loan for those six months instead because it has the higher rate of 4.5%?

In the US, those balance transfers typically come with a 3% to 5% fee. This makes them only worthwhile if you're getting a much better rate, AND you're going to take many more months to pay it down. They also often are temporary promotional offers which expire after a certain amount of time, and I see yours is that as well. What's the rate default to after the promotion expires? Is this rate higher than the current card? If you are paying a transfer fee, how much is it? Some of these deals are worthwhile and a lot of them are not.

But I can just pay back the balance with the line of credit that the money is being transferred from before the rate increases. By that time I'll have saved potentially $270 in interest so it seems worthwhile. Edit: OH LOOK AT THAT. My visa limit got cut from 12.5k to 7.5k at some point. Please give me the told-ya-so's. Not that I'm worried. We still have 16.5k in available credit, it's just interesting to me that they actually lowered my limit. tuyop fucked around with this message at 14:02 on Jan 25, 2013 |

My credit limit on my main card used to be almost $20K a few years ago when I was making less money. I just checked it and it's at $5.5k now. Banks are being smarter about how much credit they give people. I always carry a zero balance, and have never missed a payment in my life FWIW.

I know it seems straightforward, but I've got a premonition that this is the prologue to another post a few months from now where you let us know that the rate ballooned to 29% and your bank put a restriction on the number of balance transfers you can do, so it's stuck there, and then you wonder aloud why you keep having setbacks. I think it's because you keep hunting for tricks and quick ploys to bring in extra cash. Yeah, you can save $270 in interest payments if this all goes according to plan. But you could've much more easily (and with zero risk) saved $100 if you'd spent less at Ikea.

One thing to be very careful about when doing a balance transfer to another credit card is NOT to use that credit card until you've paid the balance off. I've always seen them apply a rule that your payments go towards what you transferred and not your new purchases. Therefore you end up getting a poo poo ton of interest applied to your purchases.

So, in Ontario it takes 90 days or so to get a security license. So I can't get a job as a guard because I'll be leaving too soon after they train me. Good news is I just DESTROYED the security guard interview. I would be such a high flying high school dropout.
