We had an unseasonably warm weekend, so I broke out the Allante' for pictures. I just like looking at it (and it drives nicely as well).

Just picked this up for the lady. 2008 Kia Rio, 130k miles, no rust, minimal hail damage. A nice little econobox 5speed to replace the piece of poo poo escort she was driving.

angryhampster posted:Nice! What an interesting car those were. Surprisingly few. The convertible top is brilliantly complex and a combination of manual actions and relay controlled automation. I can raise/lower it in about 30 seconds now - the hardest part is doing things in the right order. The relays had started to go bad making the automated parts act weird and raising the top especially frustrating. Fortunately the relays are readily available from most BMW dealers -- they were also used to control the intermittent wipers on most 80s-90s 3, 5 and 7 series. Unfortunately they are $60 a pop. Fortunately only 2 have gone bad so far, already preparing to replace the other 4 in the near future. I had to do surgery on the Bose speaker amps - but that's common to all Bose car audio systems from the 80s and 90s - they undersized the capacitors in the amps and eventually they'll bust. With some patience and a soldering iron I put properly sized caps in for $20. The power antenna died, nylon rope broke inside the motor, was easily repaired for $40. The only unresolved issues are a non-functioning cassette deck (a bummer for iPod integration) -- likely needs a new belt. And the dashboard blackout button doesn't work the way it should. It's supposed to turn all dash/instrument lighting off except for the numeric speedometer readout, wiper controls, headlight controls, and window/lock controls. Currently the tachometer and speedometer also stay illuminated but don't display any data; the radio display stays illuminated if it's turned on. Not a big deal or worth the trouble to diagnose and repair. The car exudes character, that's for sure.

I also believe that the XC90 V8 is mounted transversely. And gently caress em.... All transverse V8's should be banned. Though the northstar isn't to awful to work on, you can at least access the rear spark plugs by laying across the engine.

The late 90's lincoln continental had the 32v modular in transverse fwd.

The LS4 in the mid-2000s Impala SS is a transverse V8.

Yeah, transverse V8s are not one of the better ideas. It makes the turning radius super wide and spark plugs tough to change. On the Allante you have to remove the upper strut brace, the intake runners, crawl onto the engine and still have gumby arms to change the rear bank. I'm trying to find a cameraman to make a video of the Rube Goldberg top design. It really is fascinating, clever, and ridiculous.

My new-to-me 2004 Infiniti G35. Couldn't be happier with it so far, that was baby's first fill up. Unfortunately the next day it snowed so the car is now very dirty, once I detail it I will be sure to get some better non-cellphone pictures.

Transverse V8s go back at least as far as the 1966 Toronado. The early 80s Rivieras had that layout too, as well as Cadillac's entire lineup from 1985-2002 (except for the Brougham/Fleetwood/Catera, which were RWD). I've driven the Northstar Eldorado and it surprisd me, not too much torque steer at all.

The Chrysler LH cars are surprisingly easy to wrench on for a FWD car... the longitudinally mounted engines are kinda nice to work with. The lack of torque steer is mostly related to equal length half shafts and the front end is pretty balanced. I am surprised as to how little torque steer my STS has as well.
