Go to your local sign shop and get some "View Thru" vinyl, or whatever they call it in your area. It's a vinyl that has zillions of little tiny holes in it. From the outside your window would appear to be painted completely white, but from the inside you could see right through it. Restaurants use it primarily for window advertisements.

I just got a package from China. It was one of those wristbands that supposedly improve your athletic performance. The thing is that I never actually ordered this thing, nor did I order anything at all from China. Has this happened to anyone else? Why would some random Chinese person send this to me?

After the 386 series computers the manufacturers got muuuuuuch better at the gold plating that they were doing. Now, old 70's era telecom equipment is loaded with gold, so they are still good, but modern computers aren't. Thank you for this. I have some old pc's around here, like Windows ME garbage, and I was thinking about giving them to these people. But I was very curious as to how much they actually get from these things, and if it might not be worth it for me to strip them of things like RAM and what not, in case there's people out there that would use the components in their older computers. I could give those components away then recycle the rest. So many decisions to make. And the thought did cross my mind that if it wasn't too persnickety, I might consider recycling the gold myself, but yeah, doesn't sound worth it for me personally. There's a recycling depot near me that takes electronics, but I don't want to do that unless literally nothing can be used from the old boxes. I bet they might be set up to recycle the metals from mobos and things, though, hmm. That's kind of their whole schtick and all. Thanks again!

I'm having a strangely hard time with this, but anyone know where I can find a decent 3.5mm audio cable on the cheap? I need a foot at most, just so I can plug my phone into my car. Locally everyone here loves charging an upwards of 10$, and I feel like I can get them extremely cheap. The dollar cables on amazon are offset by 5$ shipping which Prime wont cover. I know a possible answer is "cough up the 10$ and go without fast food for a day" but it's hard paying that much for a foot cable.

I have a job interview tomorrow for an office assistant position. Definitely just a job and not a career track, but the pay is pretty good for what it is. The company's owner just sent me a 32 page PowerPoint presentation for an upcoming conference he's hosting next week and asked me to "jazz it up" so he could get an idea of what I'm capable of. He added at the end, "Don't bother spending too much time on it, just do what you can." The presentation is absolutely abysmal though, just page after page of white backgrounds, black Arial text, dozens of bullet-points, and zooming entrances. I'd really like to get this job, I want to make a good impression, but I also don't want to spend my evening completely overhauling this thing for free. Since I agreed to work on it, does "doing what I can" mean 10 or so slides of awesome work (and the promise to finish the rest if hired) or a moderate tweaking of the entire presentation?

It's just an old school shortboard. That what decks generally looked like in the 70s and 80s before people started doing tricks off the nose of the deck. I've heard them referred to as "pin nosed" but I'm not sure that's really a widely used term.

Either way, it's a good chance at a first impression so why not start off with a bang?

I was just watching a gangster movie and I thought, why doesn't a criminal just launder money by gambling with cash? Lottery tickets and casinos and stuff. You'd get a majority of it back, pay Uncle Sam, and everybody's happy. There's a limit to how far you could take it, but most criminals don't actually make all that much money.

I venture that it's the main reason casinos are built in places where nobody would think to go for entertainment.

You get 47% of it back, if you're playing "red" on roulette. 46% on Powerball, when the jackpot is around $100,000,000. Maybe as much as 49% if you're good at poker or blackjack. And the feds know your tricks. Gamboling is heavily regulated, which means lots of attention, which means lots of opportunities to get caught. Plus, if you do decide to pay taxes on it, well, the IRS knows the odds as well as I do. If you have an annual income of $50,000 from gamboling winnings, they're going to wonder why you didn't declare your $120,000 income.

When I print from the pdf it looks fine... But we'll distribute the document digitally as well. What is going on and how can I fix it? PS: Thanks for all the window replies. Criminals used to do this much more, but now the government regulates gambling enough to catch money launderers doing this. They'd just grind a roulette wheel for a reasonable average return. Poker is the only game in a casino where a good player can actually come out ahead, because the house takes a cut of his winnings, but it's too risky for a criminal launderer to play.

Most US states that allow slot machines mandate that over a sufficient period of time, a slot machine must return anywhere from 92% to 98% of the money put in in the form of rewards. The catch of course, is that you might sit there plinking in money for 3 days straight and not get anything back, and then the next guy to try it wins a jackpot of 92% of what you put in. And slot machines get very carefully inspected to ensure that they do provide that rate of return before they're allowed to be operated.

They'll do far better laundering in *building* the casinos, rather than gambling in them. Cocaine is a major reason Miami has a skyline.

Why are there so many printer drivers needed? They take up several gigs on a standard OS X installation, and Windows has a list of hundreds of drivers, even within one manufacturer like HP. Couldn't HP just say hey, all our printers will conform to this standard driver specification, and just put out an updated version of that driver each year?
