Thanks for the informative response, I appreciate it!

My girlfriend wants to go to Dubspot for a three month Ableton course and I'm going to get dragged along with it. I think Berlin would be a far more suitable match for me. I'm already expecting living costs to be through the roof. I'm familiar with the underground trap style/UK influenced work but thats not what I intend to be putting out as "work." The warehouse parties are more so up my alley. One thing I've been hearing a lot though is that NYC definitely lost its bohemian touch, its basically a playground for the rich.

From what I've heard Berlin isn't that cheap either. Regardless I'd only be spending three months in NYC anyways. Can I get peoples inputs on this?

For techno, Berlin is undoubtably better, but New York is one of the better places in the United States to be. Here's a write up on the bunker from resident advisor to give a taste http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1746 .

If you want to go to record store that specializes in the sort of music residents of this thread seem to prefer I recommend https://halcyonline.com/ . They can point you to events you might be interested in.

Firaga is correct in that a lot of the biggest techno names will be at Cielo or Pacha or some other venue that has insanely expensive drinks, but there is an underground niche for everyone so if you look around I'm sure you will find events that are more intimate and less expensive. There's also a new club opening in williamsburg from the same owner as Cielo which I assume will be a slightly cheaper alternative to its meatpacking district counterpart.

Firaga

WHAT YOU SAY
Ah yeah the new club in Brooklyn had Dubfire on opening night. I also had the privilege of seeing Breakbot in a hotel lounge (Yotel) powered by Funktion Ones.

Last time I went to Cielo it was residents night playing awesome jazzy deep house (think Mark Farina mushroom jazz) and there was no cover, and open bar from 10-11. $8 beers after that which isn't too bad.

I've been to a few BK warehouse shows with great craft beer on tap for about $6 a pint but unfortunately the music wasn't anything interesting.

So like I said, hit or miss. If you are considering Berlin I would definitely recommend that over NYC as much as NYC is almost like a second home for me. It's great to visit, but if you don't have local friends who can point you in the right direction, or plan ahead to visit during an event you want to go to, you will find it a little lacking.

Without a doubt I'd rather go to Berlin to be in that environment. I want to collaborate with other networks I've made.

NYC doesn't have much appeal to me other than Dubspot (https://www.dubspot.com/register/ableton-live-producer-certificate-program) which I'm not really that interested in either... I'd appreciate the vinyls though and most definitely would check out dopejams. Has anyone read their rules before? I heard of this place on RA. http://dopejams.net/therules

Just listening to this now, been a bit pre-occupied with life and that. It's a tight mix man, nice progression, smooth transitions. You've got nothing to worry about mate, I'm enjoying it! Especially liked the Marjo & Linda to Jackin' mix.

edit:

My big berlin post isn't really happening but as there's further discussion here's a couple vids I took proper tourist stylee with the phone....

Bunker room at Wedding Stattbad and a nice example of the absolute stomping berlin bass (featuring some choice dance moves from my main man Scottie) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeMnlPWK7lQ

Magda did a 3 hour set at Katerholzig (check this place out for a party venue... loving insane) http://www.katerholzig.de/

A small slice of the warehouse room. There was lots of shouting and wooping over the course of the few days. People everywhere, dancing everywhere. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MA4E-6ACiWM

If anyone can ID this I would be forever grateful? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWQ9AVdM_8A

I hate that fat chick with the glasses so much, boils my blood watching her pretend to enjoy the music and looking over to make sure the camera is pointing at her :argh:

Anyways, Jackmaster's Mastermix should be right up your street. Similar sort of track selection to Sven Vath's set, the Kolsch - Der Alte and The Streets - Turn the Page mix at 1:06:00 is unreal: https://soundcloud.com/nmbrs/jackmaster-mastermix-2012

Please post more rude assumptions like that, thanks (also did you really have to resort to "fat chick"?). Have you been to Boiler Room? I've been, and I can tell you that of course you're going to want to dance in front of the camera, because that's what makes Boiler Room special (obviously there are people who don't want to be seen on camera, but can you deny the fact that some will, even if they Like The Music?). Does that mean that she doesn't like the music? Of course not. When MikeQ was on the boiler room, I made sure I was on camera, and it isn't like I don't like MikeQ - I love Mike.

I don't get why you're so defensive about what I said. I thought it was universally accepted that the majority of the people in the Boiler Room crowd are there because of its exclusivity, not the music? You can replace that chick with whoever you like, but if you're dancing to the breakdown in a deep house track as though it's happy hardcore then you're either a bad dancer or trying too hard.

Tbh I got really mad because you said "fat chick". (and people wonder why techno is such a "boys club"). While I agree with you that there are definitely people who are in to it for the exclusivity, I think you would also agree that it is definitely not the only reason that people will go (look at my experience, additionally I had a friend who went to see Ben UFOs set at the RBMA x WHP boiler room who you couldn't see on camera - and these are definitely not anecdotal situations). If people wanted to go simply for the exclusivity, then why is Boiler Room LA almost always empty and why did Soundstream have almost nobody there to see his set? (Also, since when have we been judging how people dance, right?)

Really wish they would repress this

Actually I've got a loving cheek to talk since I talk since I was really liking that new Troy Gunner release on Infinite Machine. Talking a sharp turn off from the Bass-y Garage vibes of his previous releases, into a Dub Techno direction. Now normally - with a good few exceptions I have to admit - I generally don't like a lot of stuff in that style, but I'm liking this.

I only gently caress with Boiler Room for their music, not so much about the audience...

It sounds messed up but music is a product now and has been now for a very long time. People treat going to a club as if its going to see an actual show. I'd rather party and dance in a dark rear end room with no lights and just listen to the music rather than face the DJ and try my best to look cool. (Boiler Room LA)

What is some good non-UK labels to look out for in regards to techno? Since i'm not really familiar with it in general outside of the obvious. I just listen to every sample on chem-recs atm.

Already have it preordered >B]

There are a lot of good techno labels, it just depends on what you're looking for, right? Like are you looking for like, heavier stuff or like tech housey stuff - industrial or not - minimal or not? I mean the obvious place to start is going through the Sandwell District catalog because that was LA based (yes Regis co-ran it but the distro was US based).

Heavier i think just not too experimental.. i got Fishermen EP on Skudge and Bleaching Agent Part 2 and they were appropriately uh banging i guess. Any suggestions of old labels along the lines of Force Inc would be be good too, like i don't know really about German labels at all. Only even found out about force inc from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA2_UOfbph0 in breakbeat hardcore mixes.

Funny thing is that Mira is a UK label eh.

I think I would start with like Kontra Muzik (which can be experimental), Killekill (also can be experimental, but heavy), Stroboscopic Artefacts (once again, can be v experimental, but v heavy), Prologue, MDR (Marcel Dettmann Records), Drumpoet Community, Token Records (V heavy), Sahko (heavy / experimental), Time to Express, Mote Evolver (though technically Luke Slater is British, the distro I'm pretty sure is european). I mean the easiest thing to do is like, listen to the CLR podcast - listen to episodes with djs that you're familiar with obv - and see what they're playing.
