What's the name for these tweaks?

I'm mostly dedicated to jailbreaking for F.lux :(

Showcase to show capital and lowercase keyboard, SwipeSelection to control the text input cursor by running your finger over the keyboard, and ManualCorrect to reverse the autocorrect functionality.

Hopefully I have the names right, I had to get a replacement phone running iOS 6, so I don't have them installed at the moment.

You got those right. Though, I had used a different tweak from SwipeSelection that allowed you to swipe the text you had typed to move the cursor.

There are plenty of reasons to not add extra things to a phone- any background tasks can crash and cause levels of instability- even if it's relatively unlikely.

e: Unless jailbreaking by itself does not add things like mobile substrate- I generally install and update Cydia immediately afterwards, so I'm not 100% certain.

I'm not trying to be mean about it. It's a common misconception that having lots of "available" ram is a good thing. It's not really and I was trying to explain why.

I feel like I need to post a side-by-side comparison video of a 3GS with wasted, "available" (free) RAM and a 3GS where all RAM is in use.

If you leave the task switcher full of stuff, the performance of older devices can take a serious nose-dive.
iOS tries to leave as much as possible in memory. Sure, no memory is "wasted", and it can make it quicker to switch back and forth between a few commonly used programs. But the second you try to open something you haven't ran in a while, you'll be sitting at a loading screen for a very, very long time. iOS seems to take its time slowly closing apps in order to free up enough memory for what you're trying to run.

People that repeat the "unused memory is wasted memory!" argument haven't used an old device on a recent version of iOS, apparently. Just because the iPhone 4S or 5 can recover from low-memory situations quickly doesn't mean the iPhone 3GS works the same.

Closing all apps on my 3GS ensures the next app I load pops open as quickly as possible. It ensures the next game I try to play won't crash two times before it finally opens. I don't care if I'm "wasting" RAM by leaving it empty, because I know my 3GS can perform better that way.

So I'm perfectly happy with my non jail broken iPhone 4S but I just started a new job and will be getting a MacBook Air for said job. Sometimes I might need to access the Internet on it while not in a wifi hot spot. So I'm thinking about jail breaking my phone to use it for tethering every once in awhile. I'm not very interested in much else that jail breaking would do for me. So my questions are: is jail breaking even available for the 4s? I know different models either can or can't be jail broken, but read a few things about a 6.1 jailbreak this weekend possibly so I was curious. Secondly: I'm perfectly happy with the way my phone is now, if I jailbreak it and add a tethering app is it possible for everything else to be identical without having to set everything up again?

Does this sound like the best solution? I don't have AT&T and I don't think sprint is as bad about data but I'm not sure.

Does anyone know what new iPhone 5s are shipping pre-installed with? I'll be upgrading from a 4 while switching carriers tomorrow, but I rather have 6.0.1 installed than 6.1. I know 6.1 should be jailbreakable but I'd like to have the hashes to fall back on if possible.

This is just as ridiculous as saying that there's no reason to jailbreak. There are benefits and drawbacks to both, and neither approach is better for everybody.

I'd probably ask my employer about providing me with a 4G hotspot before dicking around with your phone.

Or you can write it off on your taxes as a work expense.

And yes, if you JB to tether it will work exactly the same if you don't install anything else (except you'll also have a cydia icon).

Having upgraded to 6.1 for the past 4 days or so, I cannot stand the lack of a kill all apps button. I abused the hell out of that for a year. Last night I went to close apps, since I remembered I had to manually do that. I had maybe 20 apps open.

On the other hand, it seems like under-the-hood changes in dealing with RAM usage/availability have improved greatly.

Beating a dead horse here but Remove Recents is a nice tweak for this kind of thing, clears out or greys out apps in the task switcher that aren't actually running or taking up RAM, which is a lot nicer than having to guess or assume.

Doesn't work that way. Apple already stopped signing 6.0.1 and 6.0.2 (which is what the 5 would be on). You'd get the old version but would never ever be able to restore to it so there's no point.

Just like on a computer "Available" ram is useless wasted ram. And yes, 5.1.1 behaved the same way. I believe iOS has ALWAYS behaved this way. In iOS 4 they added background tasks. The OS suspends apps when they go into the background unless they are doing specific tasks (playing music, location tracking or a 10 minute grace window (to download stuff for example)). And the OS removes them from memory when it needs more memory for another app.

Not gonna sperg out but I'm just going to say that if I have a bunch of apps open super hexagon runs choppy on my IPhone 4 and killing apps makes it run smooth again. It's nice to be able to do it with a single click of the button. If you have ever played super hexagon you will know that choppiness is unacceptable.

Also, when jailbroken, can you use an app that will allow 3G/4G to be switched on/off from the lock screen?

Cheers.

Don't forget @pod2g!

SBSettings will work at the lockscreen, and you can throw the 3G/4G/cellular data toggle on there. NCSettings uses Notification Center which requires you to pass the lockscreen first.

My own questions: Just to be sure, is jailbreaking 6.X.X still as easy as 'Restore from Backup -> Run JB program -> Done?' How is everyone backing up their Cydia stuff? And there's no sign of a iPhone 4S/5 baseband unlock right?

Download 6.1 iPhone Software.
Plug iPhone into iTunes.
Transfer all purchases, and back up iPhone to iTunes.
Shift-Click Restore, point it to the 6.1 iPhone Software you downloaded.
Restore.
Point it to the backup you just performed.
Sync over all the Apps and Music.

Everything should be how it was before, except now you'll have the "stock" 6.1 software without the fuckery OTA updates introduce.

Note: This is only fuckery concerning jailbreaking. OTA updates are perfectly acceptable if you don't plan on jailbreaking.

For whatever reason I had to do a second restore from backup once I put all my apps back on (they didn't go automatically for some reason). All my setting were saved, but, for example, Audible had a list of books "downloaded" but all the files weren't really there and would have had to be redownloaded. Less an issue for files synced to a cloud, but for apps like ComicZeal, it would suck to have to refind all of my comics and put them back on.

Re-restoring from backup fixed it.

If you use Google Voice, the SMS Extension can be installed on an iPad and you can text via Messages using your GV number. The only drawback is you (understandably) don't get synced conversations between devices.
