Listening to Da Octopusss right now, and just sounds like lo-fi generic electro to me. I like the gimmick though, and bet it sounds good in a club or live.

Late to this, but: FLA - Airmech is really good. I really like their early stuff (and only recently got into them, so worked my way back and then stopped around 97), and I didn't overdo it on the dubstep (just Planet Mu stuff), so I don't hear anything out of place in the album. (The Tangerine Dream vibes on the intro were jarring though). I'm totally OK with no lyrics. and this is a nice direction from FLA for me. Thanks thread!

Just wanna say that Project Pitchfork - BLACK is p. much ridic loving good you guys. Easily in the top 3 of Pitchfork albums and also Acid Ocean is very possibly one of the best Project Pitchfork tracks ever (Spilles actually singing again  )

It doesn't expressly cover what you're wanting to do, but Dance Music Manual has an extensive section on what all the little knobs and sliders in your synth's interface do and why and how they're used together. There's even a section that talks about different drum and instrument sounds and how to build them on a synth. It won't get you all the way, but it'll give you a baseline understanding of what the gently caress you're doing and let you do more than just surf through presets. It does kind of assume that you're working on hardware instead of software, but most VST synths that I've seen use faux-hardware interfaces anyway. I mean, maybe it's not really all that useful- I'm not a musician, just a guy who likes dicking around uselessly once in awhile.

But I'm excited. I never got to see them back in 2000. I hope they aren't too egotastic to play all of the hit songs. According to Wikipedia, they were going to work with Skrillex..

Just get a DAW and go from there, theory helps immensenly. Invest in hardware when you've know what you are doing and feel like it might add something. Stay away from gearslutz.

If you're someone who freaks out because you don't know how to plug a TV into a DVD player, but you are an Excel wizard, you might do better with Cubase than Reason. If you're someone who spends all day plugging things into different things and adjusting knobs, Reason will seem intuitive. If you're workflow-oriented, Ableton is easy to get. You follow me? The lesson that Apple has taught everyone over the last ten years is that skeuomorphic interfaces are only 'intuitive' when people are expecting a skeuomorphic interface.
