Nor do I care that things aren't following history or that cultures and things aren't lasting as they should, or that the Norman Conquest rarely if ever goes historically(As a 'for instance').

I find it really hard to not just try and expand as fast as possible which is why I only ever play with mods to make the game harder. I was one of those weird people who was pretty OK with MM being full of bullshit events because history is more or less a big chain of bullshit followed by outrageous luck. It's really too easy to get great inherited claims or lands in CK2, once you're a king you can easily become a multiking in 1 or 2 generations.

The most exciting thing about The Old Gods for me is the 867 start date. That suddenly makes CK2 the longest paradox game timeline-wise, at almost 600 years.

I wonder if they're going to compensate for extra ~200 years of researching technology other than just slapping every province tech level down to 0.

Yeah, do you guys at paradox have any ideas on that? I guess the easiest way is to just make progression slower so in the end game it comes out to the same but that also seems kinda boring. It's not as big a deal as say EU3, I even ignore tech most of the time and just let it happen and it works fine, but I'm just curious.

Yeah it is a 867 map but there's giant regions with nothing in them; everything west of Bohemia save for Novgorod, the eastern parts of the Byz empire, the southern Arabian peninsula, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Somalia, and the vast majority of west Africa are all empty. Also the schism has already happened.

This is essentially true. Still, I would not mind a few events that gave opinion modifiers between Catholic and Orthodox characters, or let Christian countries on the boundary between the Pope and Patriarch, like Poland, choose who they wanted to support. Has there been any further news on East v. West? Is the game looking any good?

True, I suppose for the sake of keeping things simpler the schism should already exist but there are other things like all of Rus being Orthodox in 876 that I'm fairly confident is inaccurate and all of Hungary being Catholic which was inaccurate in the 1066 start and it's sillier in the 876 start that I think would have to change for a proper 876 scenario.

E:^^^^^ There is one event I recall where once the king dies (i.e. a few years pass) you get an event that asks if you let his dumbass of a brother take over (gain CON and MIL everywhere), invite the Qing dynasty back (become Qing) or become the Taiping Republic. I'd say jump over, keep being the Heavenly Kingdom when you get that event, and cheat a bit to modernize faster because gently caress playing an unciv. Wiz posted:You realize the 867 scenario is not done, correct? I was only commenting on the Great Schism thing. Ah woops, I got a bit ahead of myself there... I was saying that the mod that rolls back the start date and uses the existing files for the 876 scenario isn't really a "complete" scenario since it has things like Rus being all Orthodox and Hungary being all Catholic and that is a bit silly and ruins some of the fun of playing in 876, and so it's not quite accurate to say you can already play the 876 scenario like Riso said. burnishedfume fucked around with this message at 22:01 on Feb 1, 2013 |

Not having so much micro-y control still bothers me and I feel like France gets crazy industrial but drat if it isn't fun to see more diplomacy and balance of power wars than just "I'm gonna eat your land" poo poo. I'm still not very good at it and I miss insta reinforcing in friendly zones but I think with the changes in AHD it may have finally won me over. Dangerous thing now is I can get into full modern conversions or multiplayer.

Hey Wiz, you might want to check the events that generate famous courtiers in the most recent version of CK2+. I seem to have gotten two Ibn Battutas and maybe three Avempaces in my game as Al-Andalus. On the same subject: if Ibn Battuta has a son, he'll be named Mohammed ibn Ibn, as "ibn" is Arabic for "son of," and it assumes that Ibn is his given name. edit: wow I am great at posting in the right thread. I remember it being repeatedly claimed in this thread that CK2 could not get an earlier start date because the feudal system would not have been established before the High Middle Ages. Yet at a quick check the capitulary of Mersen - basically the Frankish kings commanding that everybody needs to pick a liege or gently caress off - is from 847, and while such changes are slow enough that twenty years later the adoption was probably not universal, playing CK2 in 867 doesn't sound ludicrous either (if only because I'd bet the capitulary was to a large degree a formalisation of the status quo). Thoughts?

You already have to take CK2's system with a grain of salt in regards to Muslims and Pagans and we're willing to do it for the sake of gameplay. Somehow I just dont really expect the same historical accuracy from crusader kings as I do other paradox titles. Even without getting over the top (aztecs) the whole thing is just sort of goofy and sandboxy rather than any attempt at logical historical emulation.

Man, you know what would be great in EUIV? When your stack is utterly destroyed, it respawns as a stack with 0 manpower after the war. It would have to reinforce back to full strength, and you wouldn't have to make a new army after every war.

Reinforcing costs money, and from the sounds of things quite a bit at that. This might end up costing more than just rebuilding them. It also means that if you want to rebuild your army with a different composition, you would have to rebuild them anyway.

The library wallpaper is great. Speaking of wallpaper, the latest March of the Eagles trailer has given my desktop a new wallpaper: Paradox, hire me as your new proofreader and voice actor. Indie darlings Increpare and Terry Cavanagh once said my voice acting was "amazing" and I'm about 60% sure they weren't being sarcastic so I trust you won't need to look at a resume.

My goal in my current game is, playing as the Greek, Orthodox count of Naples, to conquer the entire Italian peninsula and set up a Greek (or Greek Sicilian), Orthodox kingdom. Its in the late 1100s and I've only barely gotten control of the southern half.

I love the idea of an 800 whenenever start date and would love a paradox game set right at the fall of Rome forward for the next 500 years or so. I think it's because we have no records that I really want to see a game trying to cover what little we do know.

I think one of the biggest reasons they haven't done such a game yet would be the difficulty in handling migrations in their game engine. I mean, mass cultural migrations where entire kingdoms were on the move, not just relatively the simple immigration in V2. They would have to redo how the engine handles a lot of different things. It just may not be compatible with Clausewitz at all. I hope they do a Migration Period game, too. They would also need to represent the rise and fall of the Carolingian Empire, too. Maybe not in that game, but in CK2? Or maybe in yet another separate game? With those two additions, we'd have more or less the complete history of western civilization.

Well, in The Old Gods DLC they're implementing landless characters and armies that are not just plain random rebels, so that seems like at least a step toward depicting landless peoples on the move and migrating. I don't think that the mechanics for a game about the Migration Period would be too far out there, even if it would be a difficult thing to depict accurately, and is not a time period that attracts a ton of popular interest.
|
# ? Feb 2, 2013 04:09 |

You could always do something like create an event that spawns landless armies to represent a migration. Say Tribe A has expanded and now occupies >50% of the provinces with Culture B. An event is triggered that spawns stacks of Culture B units on the edge of Tribe A's territory that move away from Tribe A and try to take land from someone else. Alternatively, make it all event based with culture switching of provinces that are experiencing immigration or emigration. An influx of different culture immigrants as a result of a migration could trigger a hefty revolt risk, and if the rebels take a county they replace the count with one of their own culture.
