Saw Frak, Ben UFO and [because of snow & cancelled flights] Joy O DJ last night in Manchester. Everyone go and see Ben UFO if you get the chance, he played some absolute crackers including two Herbert tracks that just about made my life. He looks about 12 as well, which is always fun.

Yup, Ben UFO in SF was a killer show. The dance floor wasn't as hectic as it sometimes is, because he was playing some off-the-wall stuff, but it was one of my favorite sets in a long time. The dude has a little bit of magic for sure

I've been diggin' the new Lil Silva white label that's came out today. I know the tunes have bene floating about for a wee bit now, but I'll be damned if it's not still fresh, some ultra funky pressure. Nothing but pure energy 'n' vibes. http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/servlet/Info?Track=WHITE002B

Had to make a call for this weekend between him/maceo plex/pearson sound/huxley on my own (with hella expensive tickets), or going to a big dub night with a lot of my friends. Chose the latter, but seeing Joy O + Roman Flugel late feb to make up for it.

New Biome EP for Mindset is the only thing of his I've ever liked. Gantz has also had a string of strong singles. Sort of an odd time for me to get into more minimalist sounds that are more bass-y and less D&B-derived.

It was basically the house DJs and producers being like "do what you want, but I don't want an MC at my raves" and the MCs saying "whatever we are gonna do what we want." I think they both agreed but they still argued a lot? I don't know. Here's what started it btw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zUoZZOH9-c

It's the same old poo poo cunts have been saying since the Garage days, it happened when the Funky crew moved into the House, hell it probably happened when loving Jesus spat some lyrics over some old testament poo poo. The good thing about that sound is it still pretty much exists the way it kinda did originally. It's a wind down, personal space thing. A bit more of an internal smoke 'em up ting. Obviously you've just been partying to way too hard, fast and busy music too much recently man! Biome has had a busy past year actually now I have another look through his releases. I can take or leave his stuff normally, though I was going to say I really liked that tune of his he had out on Macabre Unit records, then I remembered it's the DCult tune on the flip I was thinking about. Ah well! I got to admit though sometimes I can listen to that kind of sound nowadays and it can seem a bit, not exactly half-baked, but I guess you could say since I 'lived through' and actively experience the kinda origins of that sound it can seem a bit like, been there done that. It can try a little too hard know what I mean?

Yeah I feel like the dudes that usually show up on Osiris or Dubstep For Deep Heads (who signed off on that name, I mean really) tend to play it a little too conservatively, like they could be stretching out and adding in personality at the margins, but they're too focused on nailing that particular tone in a very particular way. Broad genre signifiers aside, a distinctive sensibility on the part of a producer is what makes a track work for me.

Shame of you for being so cheap. Especially since all those early 00s mix CDs EZ can probably be had for pennies, they sold like mad way back. Everyone seemed to have them. EZ's Pure Garage mixes really take me back. The occassional bit of pure bait stuff in there (hey they were out on Warner's so what do you expect?), but still a load of nice stuff mixed-up. On saying that he did do that Bass, Breaks & Beats mix which was fantastic, full of the darker stuff and that kinda proto-Grime kinda thing. Riot.EXE posted:I meant Garage as a whole, but I'm sure UK has more of the better stuff. The thing is UK Garage became a very, very different beast to the original US stuff, so liking one doesn't mean you might like the other. I mean the UK stuff spawned out of the US stuff sure, and if you look at say, early Nice 'N' Ripe releases, it's close in style but still just that little bit different. Come '95/96 or so you start bringing in the bass more, then you bring in the Jungle more so you end up with the Speed Garage thing which is just light years away from the original American style, and it just got weirder from there! E: And for some actual useful content, I remembered there was a similar conversation in the old thread, so a quick trawl through the archives I found it. Anyway I had recommended both Azuli Records "Blackmarket Presents 2-Step". The first mixed by Frankie Foncett and the second by Groove Chronicles. Then check out Locked On records Sound Of The Pirates mixes. Zed Bias did the first while Ed Case did the second. Start on those four comps for that early 00s 2-step sound. 28 Gun Bad Boy fucked around with this message at 12:42 on Feb 7, 2013 |

While you're here, 28GBB, I have a small request. I'm looking for more stuff like M.A.N.I.C. - I'm Comin' Hardcore. So early 90s hardcore, but slower stuff, it's kind of mostly house but with that slight hardcore shuffle. The Union City Colours compilation CD with that tune, the early Sasha tune, Malawi - Cry Freedom, and stuff like that is exactly the kind of thing I'm after. Any ideas?

Anae posted:While you're here, 28GBB, I have a small request. Yeah, most of the stuff off that UCR comp is House, but that more (and I hate myself for saying this) 'progressive' House sound of the time, which I guess has kinda been forgetton about. Dabbling with breakbeats and vaguely trancey (in the old meaning) a bit. Anyway you could check out what I like to call Warp: The Lost Year aka 1992. Sandwiched between the early Bleep stuff, and the Artificial Intelligence stuff of '93+ Warp put out a bunch of more progressive Housey stuff that nobody really bothers or even remembers with nowadays. It might be more what you're looking for, though sometimes it might be a bit too Techno maybe? I don't know, just pick up that Warp comps The Evolution Of The Groove and Tequila Slammers And The Jump Jump Groove Generation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ty6dLfx8lUw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Do-JWSLs-I https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxtV8h814Jk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRWdcDEiv7M And as much as I make for of them, you can always debase yourself and check out William Orbit's Guerilla imprint, or at least the stuff from say '91 to '93-ish (after that it can get a bit too trancey). Like a schoolboy picking on the girl he secretly fancies, I always slag Guerilla off but in truth a lot of stuff I don't actually mind at all. Though in truth it's dated maybe not so well nowadays. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fi6M-L1B8_A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qS4JaC8m5Gk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXecXjWHea4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHzzycgZU8A Anyway not a clue if they'll be of any use whatsoever, but hey you can give them a go I guess. Unfortunately once you're past 1993 or so at the very latest it all ends in that kind of Sasha kinda thang. Very trancey. Very white. Very blah.
