Adds a ton of nuance to game in terms of who you should have out front, who you should pair with each other for stat bonuses, and swapping partners when necessary. I haven't played a single map where I don't pair up, and I'll miss it a ton if they don't decide to carry the mechanic into future titles. I really miss Shove/Smite. Those skills added some very nice strategic elements to PoR/RD. Sad to see them missing in later games.

So when you pair up a unit, how do you get both of them to attack and receive XP? I don't want to pair somebody up just to have one of them not level up proper.

The chance of getting a dual strike is based on the skl of the two people, as well as their support level. Note that the back member can never gain the exp for killing, only for damaging. ee: VVVVVV you don't actually lose experience. In fact, you create some experience out of thin air. In every game you've had to decide who gets each kill. Pairing up your units doesn't reduce the number of kills or anything, it just means you can't have both of them active during the same enemy phase. cheetah7071 fucked around with this message at 20:55 on Feb 4, 2013 |

On Lunatic you're basically asking to get doubled without some minor speed boosts. I think I'm just not grasping how to best apply Pairing Up. If you Pair Up too much, don't you run the risk of losing out on some EXP for those characters? As far as the utility it provides, though, that truly is quite powerful.

On Lunatic you're basically asking to get doubled without some minor speed boosts. On the other hand you could just make someone a bulky War Monk and pair them up with another bulky character and just use like 4-6 characters all paired up and camping forts. This works on Lunatic (indeed, it's probably the best idea in some cases on Lunatic).

To chime in on Pair-Up chat, it's downright essential. I haven't played normal so maybe you can ignore it there, but on Hard enemies are numerous and strong enough that you need the bonus stats/chance of a Dual Guard saving your rear end to stand a chance. Technically, you do sacrifice the amount of actions you can take, but non-paired units aren't gonna ORKO or tank very well, so...

Screw waiting for the preorder. Went out and bought it during lunch. I was always getting another copy for a friend anyway, so I don't feel bad about it at all! Started on Normal Classic because I've heard it's around FE8 Hard in difficulty (i.e. pretty easy) and I want my first run to be blind with silly pairings so this seems about right!

A general heads up for anyone who is looking to get their hands on a physical copy! I didn't want to have to hog our single XL all of the time, so after deciding against the impulse to just grab the eShop version, I actually ended up having some luck at Target during lunch today. As of this morning, about 2 or 3 of the stores in the Kansas City area seemed to have gotten at least few copies in stock, and it looks like as the day has gone on more of them are reporting inventory. The situation might not be the same for everyone, but it's at least an alternative. http://www.target.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/p/fire-emblem-awakening-nintendo-3ds/-/A-14411717 cheetah7071 posted:Turn off the tutorial, or wait until chapter 3. Also, even though that was directed to other people asking, thanks for that! Even though I really didn't need it on anyway, I admittedly didn't consider that leaving the tutorial on would disable Pairing Up, and was very confused when I couldn't do it.

I'm only playing on Hard, but holy poo poo Donnel with Kellam backing him up is a total loving beast once he gets a couple levels. I had a stupid-hard random Risen fight which was my 9 dudes vs about a dozen Pegasus Knights (half of which had short spears, the other half of which had iron and steel lances), a knight, and some sort of sword dude. There was absolutely nothing I could do to prevent everyone from dying ... except Donnel+Kellam, who took no damage from the short spears or iron lances and barely any from the steel lances and basically demolished the entire level by themselves. I think Donny ended up at half hp after about half a dozen rounds where I had only one active unit against 6 or so to start out with. Fortunately I'm playing on Casual for this first time through. I still reset for "deaths" in story chapters, but I gave up resetting for these goddamn all-aggro all-flying Risen encounters. Love the experience, but drat they're hard on any unit with less than 15 or so defense.

Ugh. Called my local Target and was cheerfully told that yes! They do have copies of Awakening in stock! Also they're not allowed to sell it to me until Wednesday. From the sounds of things the guy literally had a copy in his hands but the register refused to let him ring it up. What the gently caress Target your website says it's released already.

I don't know why the gently caress am I still using Virion, the guy's only level 10 (no reclass) and I'm on Chapter 12 and the rear end in a top hat's still only has 6 speed which might as well be "doubled by literally anything" territory at this point. Please tell me he's not actually needed for the plot.
