this is totally what I read into it. Everyone opposes him, his allies are deserting him (you can see them running away) but he is still charging forward because he's a pompous arse.

To be fair, the quote is (apocryphally) attributed to Marechal Foch, leading the French 9th Army at the battle of St Gond in 1914 (at the culmination of the retreat from Mons), so it's appropriate that one of his opponents at least would be wearing the Cuirassier Pickelhaube. Disconcertingly, Foch's action at the Marne was largely succesful, so if you extend the metaphor, I guess the Torygraph are predicting Pob will win in the end.
