Uncompressed (PCM) can easily go on a disc, yeah; apparently Ghost Rider had both a 5.1ch PCM mix and a Dolby TrueHD mix on the disc. There's not an actual difference between PCM and TrueHD/DTS-HD MA as the Dolby/DTS formats are compressed losslessly. Any difference (if there is one) is entirely down to the mastering for that track. Speed Racer has none of those, however, having just a standard Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track. I doubt it matters, doubly so since there's not even a "better" version to compare to.

Speed Racer is brilliant, and is probably one of the best edited films I've ever seen and the race scenes are beautiful.

Yeah, the lack of lossless audio is the entire reason I haven't bought Speed Racer.

However, as another poster said, DTS-HD and Master Audio is lossless, so there's no real reason to do that. Also, a lot of older receivers can't handle uncompressed surround sound audio, so it simply outputs it as stereo, where as DTS-HD and Master Audio both have a lossy core so that older receivers can at least output something in surround.

The two losslessly compressed HD audio types are Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. I know that DTS-HD MA has a lossy core that is just regular DTS but I'm pretty sure TrueHD just gets downmixed to stereo.

I've an older receiver that lacks HDMI and the ability to do the current encodings and had accepted my fate until one day I realized my BD player and receiver have analog in/out so I have my player do the encoding and the receiver just plays what it gets from it. Which is quite fantastic since I can hold off on needing a new receiver for the foreseeable future.

Which is quite fantastic since I can hold off on needing a new receiver for the foreseeable future. That's old school right there. When I bought my HD-DVD player ( ), I thought I would have to buy a new receiver to receive lossless since my old one didn't have HDMI inputs. When I found out that you could do lossless over analog (though you need like five or six RCA cables), it blew my mind. I thought I was set until I realized that my receiver didn't have the proper analog jacks either, so I ended up buying that new receiver after all. Even though I picked the losing HD format, I'm still glad that HD-DVD was killed by blu-ray. It seems like almost all blu-rays include HD surround in some format, whereas with HD-DVDs, a few had it but a lot just didn't have the space on the disk for lossless. This led to awful half-measures like Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD HR. Companies making blu-rays really have no good reason for not including HD audio unless it's a niche title that is unlikely to move a lot of copies. Hell, some blu-ray movies actually have uncompressed lossless PCM, so space really isn't an issue.

Here's the Star Trek: Enterprise S1 Blu-ray trailer - CBS stayed away from the UPN-esque sexy stuff, thankfully. The behind-the-scenes "On the Set" special is something that has never been seen before this release, even on television or previous releases. It was shot as a pilot for a PBS series that would go behind the scenes to television shows when they were being filmed, to follow a scene or sequence from the initial concept discussions through writing, filming, and post-production... but PBS didn't pick it up, so this footage has been tucked away with the pilot's producer since 2001. CBS was lucky enough to be able to buy the rights to the entire show for this set. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdxynXpRyBw&hd=1

Definitely worth seeing if your local store has any copies if you have one in your city. I also grabbed The Reef for $6 (best shark movie since Jaws, which isn't really saying a whole lot, but it's still a solid horror movie).

Movie theaters are great but I'm plenty happy with blu-ray for home viewing for the foreseeable future.

I love seeing ads for a new format on the old one. "The picture is clearer! Look at this picture! Now imagine that poo poo clearer! The sound?! Just listen to that piano! I have no doubt the exact same claim was made when DVD was first coming out. People have a very short memory. Quick question, I bought the Gladiator Sapphire Series blu-ray at Target for $8, but how can you tell it's the corrected version of the movie? It has the yellow barcode and says "2 Disc" above the Paramount logo. I haven't opened it yet in case I have to return it.

There are so many Woody Allen films that don't even have good DVD releases, I really wish they would do some kind of blu-ray box set for some of his less popular releases. Everyone Says I Love You, Celebrity, and at least a few others only have non-anamorphic letterboxed releases that look like rear end a modern TV.

What time is it? BLU-RAY TIME! Adventure Time - 'The Complete 2nd Season' on DVD and Blu-ray...Plus '1st Season' Blu! All three releases are coming out from Warner this June 4th quote:Last July saw the Warner Home Video release of Adventure Time - The Complete 1st Season on DVD, and fans loved it...but they certainly wished it was made available on Blu-ray Disc as well. Today the studio has announced that Adventure Time - The Complete 2nd Season is coming to DVD on June 4th, for $26.95 SRP. But wait, there's more! On that day, priced at $32.07 SRP each (what a weird cost!), Warner is ALSO releasing both the 1st and 2nd season sets on high-def Blu-ray! The new BD version of the first season seems to have precisely the same bonus material as the previous DVDs do. Extras for the Blu-ray and DVD versions of The Complete 2nd Season aren't currently available (in the provided information, the studio seems to have mistakenly copied over the list of bonus material for the first season set), but stay tuned for updates! There's not nearly enough animation on blu-ray, so this is a very very good thing.

Know any further details on this? I really hope they don't make that group commentary exclusive to that set. Are we assuming that it will all be on the S4 set?
|
# ? Feb 9, 2013 01:24 |
|
No. The commentary is specifically for the feature-length edit, and won't be split between the S3/S4 sets. Additionally, there's going to be a gag reel and featurette which may also be exclusive to the set, but we're not sure of that yet. Before you call it "double-dipping" or whatever, this intended as a special, extra thing. There's no room to include the full two-hour re-edit+extras on either the S3 or S4 set. Plus, there have been many, many people who have said that they're not willing to pay for the season sets, but they'd gladly buy BOBW if it was ever put out as an independent release.
