KozmoNaut posted:Wasn't that just overhead cams, like Lamborghini originally wanted to add, but were told it was too expensive? Deedle posted:MultiAir is basically VVT + VVL for the intake side. While it could be combined with an in-block cam for the exhaust that wouldn't make much sense, MultiAir heads are about as large as a normal DOHC head, if they went with an in-block cam because there isn't enough space for DOHC there wouldn't be enough space for the MultiAir head either. I don't think size was really an issue. Here's some close up cutaways of the Multiair system. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/14.html Here's the actual head itself posted by the Op of the FIAT 500 thread. It's not very big or tall at all, if anything it's just rather wide, which is an issue on a 1.4l engine but probably less so on an 8.4l one. You have to spread your imagination a bit but the Multiair valves are already actuated by basically rockers from the exhaust side cam, now imagine that cam moved further away with pushrods connected to the rockers. I think it should be do-able. Anyway, the Viper is a really low slung car, so even if it was too tall for the Viper there's no reason why you can't fit 2 of them on either side of a V8 or V6 in a truck or regular car.

Here's some close up cutaways of the Multiair system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6y-SVMgB6AQ I am not ICE expert by any stretch of imagination, but what I gather from that video is that while there is a connection between the exhaust cam and the MultiAir unit, the hydraulic system can bypass the cam entirely. The man explicitly states that the system could leave the intake valve closed for the entire intake stroke, and from what I've read on AMT.nl it can also open the intake valve during the exhaust stroke as a sort of EGR solution. It seems to me that the connection between the cam and the intake valves is more a back-up for when the hydraulic side of things fails. But then I am probably completely wrong.

The valves are still actuated by the cam, it's just that their action can be moderated by the amount of hydraulic fluid between the valves and the cam lobes. The Multiair head is basically just a set of metal chambers that hold the hydraulic fluid, like a hydraulic valve lifter that can be controlled on the fly.

The alternative is not to modify your car to the point where it's undrivable on the street. To be fair, it's more understandable than the people who do the same thing (though slightly faster) in their SUVs on a street near my house. I take my car over the "speed humps" at 30 mph (the speed limit) while they will take one wheel at a time at 15 mph. Uthor fucked around with this message at 21:46 on Feb 17, 2013 |
