A nonHP F3 is worth less than $200 unless the person buying it is an idiot. You will definitely make money by selling it just don't expect it to fully fund a decent DSLR.

Somewhere on the Pentax forum (I know, I know) there's a good guide written by a marksman about how to hold a camera steady.

You can hand hold 5min long exposures with an X100. Also whats with all the Capture NX hate. Sure its wonky compared to LR but it does a fine job with the NEF files. Yall hate NikSoft or something?

All of those photos look overexposed by 1-2 stops. You could easily have gone from eg. 1/100 to 1/200 shutter speed, get an easier exposure (less worry about shake) as well as not blowing everything out. Although I'm amazed you blew out the snow shots. (I'm guessing that's what they are.) Light meters tend to underexpose in snowy landscapes.

I really like this photo. I think the lack of contrast on the bottom half works well. I bought a D3200 today, which is pretty exciting. Its such a huge improvement over my E500. It also came with a free case and extra battery and stuff, which was nice. The only thing I am not particularly impressed with is the proprietary USB port. Does anyone know what this bit of plastic if for? It was in the outer box, but I can't work out where it goes. It looks like something clips into it.

That is a cap for the viewfinder so that stray light won't affect the meter should you be silly enough to use auto on long exposures. It is basically completely useless except in very specific circumstances.

Honestly I'm pretty surprised that Nikon would bother to throw in a viewfinder cover with a d3200. Not that it isn't a great camera, just seems kind of meticulous for an entry level body.

The eos-3 seems go go for around 1-200 bucks from a quick look, so for an equal price that'd probably get you an f100 or an f4s body. If he doesn't need all the bells and whistles you could find something like an N75/F75 for much cheaper and still have a quality camera.

Cool - so street pricing ought to be around $1000 ~ $1100 for the body. This has to put even more pressure on Canon to get the 7DmkII out, especially when you consider that Nikon has had them whipped for the past year or so (D800/E, D600, D71k). How are Canon's entry level SLRs compared to Nikon's? I still want Nikon to get serious about MILCs, but maybe they're convinced it will gently caress their DSLRs?

They have a MILC range, it just happens to have stupid sensors. Canon's MILCs use APS-C sensors, but the AF performance is atrocious. Which is more of a problem now, but easier to change than sensor size. I don't think the Nikon entry level 24x36 DSLRs are so much better than Canon/Sony. There's just no reason for the 5d3 to be that much more money.

I don't really keep up with the APS-C stuff anymore, but it appears the ~$800 camera range is kinda laughable: The D3200's $500 gets you a t3i, but the official Canon entry level is the T4(1100D), which apparently uses the XSi (450D) sensor? If so then that's kinda sad.

Yes, it's the same as cropping in post, although you do gain the added convenience of smaller file size, 7 FPS instead of 6, and I assume the viewfinder either has frame lines for the crop, or it might even black out the cropped off parts of the image. By the way, cropping DX 1.3x is the same as a micro-four thirds sized sensor, if anyone cares about the comparison.

51point AF with 15 crosstypes. Wowzers, and I thought my D7000 was good. I like where Nikon is going with this. Canon should have something up their sleeve for a 7D update, it came out before the D7000, and is getting kind of long in the tooth.
