Same here in Vietnam, I have a Kindle which I bring everywhere, a laptop and a smartphone. Never had anything stolen - well except my previous smartphone but that's because I was passed out drunk at 3am outside. Lesson learned, eh.

Yeah, the only thing I've ever lost was probably "stolen" but I can't really complain about it as such, heh. I had my iPhone when I walked into the bar at 01:00 with my friends and when I left at 05:00 I didn't have it anymore. I'm pretty sure it wasn't so much stolen as it fell out of my pocket while I was being a drunk idiot and whoever found it neglected to return it.

It's more a parody of/shoutout to government propaganda, because an actual govt-produced piece would never be that catchy.

Allow me to present the shame of Singapore on Youtube (circa 2007):

'support' doesn't rhyme with 'growth.' That's the worst thing ever! And seriously, how did they ever think that dancing was ever acceptable to publish anywhere ever?

It's also the best thing ever. Share more government stuff please. I remember when an ad promoting marriage was making the rounds on the Chinese Internet about two years ago, an old Indian woman eulogizing her flatulent Indian husband. Chinese girls ate that poo poo up, but it just seemed weird for the government to be promoting marriage like that.

The actress has an interesting, old-style colonial accent quite reminiscent of that very rare group of English-educated elders here the English-trained accent characteristic of the older literary and dramatic circle here (the youngsters are more American-influenced). (Ironically she's apparently a Malaysia theatre practitioner.) Turns out she was a Malaysian filmmaker married to a Chinese man, and quite unfortunately passed away in '09. How do the Chinese view the Indians? Is it like Thailand where they're tolerated, but there's a slightly palpable disdain just under the surface (or always in private)? I would imagine, given the direct historic conflicts, there might be more hostility, but I've read that the countries have been engaging in a lot of trade and things in recent years.

Nah I'd bet it's just fictional, I just meant that the filmmaker had an interethnic marriage herself, and the film echoes that.

The "national night" ad isn't government related at all, it was a viral video created by Mentos' local marketing company that succeeded beyond their wildest dreams.

No way the government would ever make something that risque..although lately the totally not government controlled media seems to like reporting on the details of the blowjobs that disgraced ex-officials got from saleswomen.

Yeah I pretty quickly realized that it wasn't a government production. But it still toes the line by making so many references to patriotism and the fact that the sex is only happening between husband and wife.

But yeah I could see how it could just be satire. The Economist used it to support an idea that Singaporeans are growing resentful of being reminded that they're not fertile enough and described the ad as inappropriate or something, I forget the exact word.

Grade A stuff, and the Tan Hong Ming one is pretty darn edgy. I hadn't realised she was behind it. It's easy to put out sentimental stuff that connects with viewers' memories of their childhoods, but keeping it from descending into pure cheese is hard. I like the middle one the best, personally, for its race relations message.

I don't see that many outside of Indian areas and the famous "Wat Kaek" on Silom. the Thais do haphazardly incorporate Hindu Gods into their shrines and things, so if you see Vishnu up there it doesn't necessarily mean it's Hindu, it could just be a Mon village or some crazy Thai thing like the zebra idols near crossings.

Of course Hinduism : Buddhism :: Judaism : Christianity so who knows?

He means the little shrines like at Erawan, not the temples. That's just a tradition, I don't know where it spawns from but for some reason it's seen as appropriate to have a shrine to a Hindu deity present for large land developments. If I had to guess I'd say it's because of the Erawan shrine itself, which was a perpetuation of something that was on that property before the hotel was built, but that particular shrine has a huge rep for granting wishes made there and has perhaps started a trend of more of the same instead of less visible / obtrusive buddhist/animist stuff. Total guess. I can tell you however that I'm almost sure there isn't some secret good reason for it, it's going to be some trend or ridiculousness.

Right, I see what you mean. I can't explain that one. It's not a Hindu shrine, it's a Thai shrine that just happens to be to a Hindu god. That's the weird part and why I can't explain it other than Thai Theravadan Buddhism is pretty inclusive when it comes to idolatry.

Yeah I meant Erawan, and also the two huge ones across the road outside Centralworld mall, I recognised one as Ganesha. It was interesting because people were doing the same rituals as at Buddhist shrines, like the prayers and placing of flowers.

The thing people say when you enter shops, which sounds like sawi-kaa, is it really sawadee ka? They get it down to three, sometimes only two syllables.

There's a city called Nakhonratchasima. It's a fairly big hub city in Issan, which makes it kind of Thailand's Chicago. If you ask someone from there where they are from they will tell you "Khorat."

Nakhonratchasima.

I once asked someone to explain to me why "ngoo ngoo plaa plaa" meant "a little bit." Literally it's "snake snake fish fish." They said "You don't understand how the concept of ease works in Thai." I still don't of course, but I do understand that it's important to Thai people that things be easy. When you hear upper class Thai people throw an English phrase into their speech with Thai friends, if you ask them why they do that, they will never say "To be snotty" or "To sound fancy" but instead "It's easier to say that than say it in Thai." It's the facility with English that is cool, not so much the English itself.

There's a lot of of syllable-clipping and short-cutting going on. You'll notice more of it the more you become able to notice things. Demonstrating that things are super easy for you and that you're laid back and chill is also demonstrating that you're cool, cultured, and good company in Thailand. The "I try really hard because I'm a hard-trier" thing that Americans think is important doesn't translate well at all.

I just booked one of those Hotel -> Bus -> Boat tickets from a hotel in Khao San. Yeah it sucks that they probably jam 45 people into a bus, but it's not too bad. I can't recall what I paid but it was under $40 I think. To be honest, you'll waste just as much money and more time going to the bus station, booking tickets, dealing with tuktuks who will try to overcharge you, booking the boat separately etc.

I never actually tried this but I read online that at the end of the night, it's not a pleasant sight to see thousands of people trying to get a boat back to Samui. Also, people pee in that beach the whole night. I wouldn't really want to be going into it after to get on a boat.

Why not book a place on Phangan near the pier. TukTuk was 500 per person to Hat Rin though for the full moon party. Going there you had no choice, when leaving I got a guy to let me on for like 200. I just told him there's tons of tuktuks waiting to fill before they can leave, if you don't take me for cheaper, someone else will.
